That all depends on where you want to take it...
If security/home automation is all you have in mind,... LinuxMCE might just be a little overkill. If you imagine that you'll "get the bug" and want to do more with it into the future,... then you could start there and work your way up to the rest of it's capabilities.
Just keep in mind,... I am frequently reminded that Linux experience does not necessarily translate to LinuxMCE experience,... It gives you an advantage on some back end stuff, but the other pieces are more involved than just that (DCE router, the wrappers for it for devices, SQL, MythTV, the deviations between LinuxMCE and a standard distro in terms of configuration, etc.).
