XBMC running on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV 2 (Arm cpu version)
« on: January 29, 2011, 03:37:55 pm »
This is maybe off topic but too good not to share:
http://xbmc.org/theuni/2011/01/20/you-asked-for-it-xbmc-for-appletv2-ipad-iphone4/

This is AWESOME, because small Apple TV 2 uses only 6W of power, costs only 100$ and it's tiiiiny...

Enjoy.

I agree it's got some interesting possibilities. If XBMC on iOS supports UPnP as it does on other OS's then AppleTV would be a fantastic low power platform.

Anyone experimenting with this at all?

At CES a number of Media Player companies announce that will be introducing XBMC on their devices later this year...:-)

Too good to share if you find xbmc usefull, which I dont hence me arriving at linuxmce. Whats next, windows mce news? Valentt, how about helping us with linuxmce instead of being a live xbmc twitter feed?

Lets not get hung up on what the media playback devices are built from. If its XBMC or Boxee or Sonos or something else if it implements UPnP we want to integrate it and have Orbiter control it. Simple as that :-). We may even see a new variant of todays MD in the near future which has a 'headless' design and supports UPnP - this would be an MD without an Orbiter as such but with an integrated UPnP Renderer ie media player. This would not have any on-screen UI at all... because the UI would be an Orbiter running on a device you hold or carry with you.

We're adding support for all manner of UPnP devices to Dianemo 10.10 right now. We hope to have the core UPnP packages re-factored to work in LinuxMCE 10.04 shortly too. UPnP devices already added and supported 'out of the box' in Dianemo 10.10 include;

- Popcorn Hour C200
- Popcorn Hour A210
- WD Live TV
- Sonos Zone Players (** Audio only of course)
- XBMC (Linux, MacOS, Windows)...and possibly XBMC for iOS if they have left the UPnP functionality in place.
- Boxee
- Sony Bravia TV's that support UPnP-AV & DLNA **this is cool as these TV's work without any additional Media Player hanging of the back of them :-)

So...what does this mean? It means you can add any of the UPnP devices listed above to your system and use any Orbiter in your system to browse the media library and find some Audio/video content you want to play (any of the supported media types) and stream that media to any of your UPnP devices. The Orbiter UI cannot run on these UPnP devices...but it can run on MD's, Touch Orbiters, iOS devices, Android Devices or in any Web Browser that supports Web Orbiter 2.0.

It means your UI is still the Orbiter...its just not running on the device that is receiving the media stream...no different really than when you are playing audio on a Squeezebox for example...the Orbiter you use to control the stream runs on some other device. It has too as Squeezeboxes cant run the Orbiter...well UPnP devices cant run the Orbiter either. So we run the Orbiter on devices that can like Android devices or iPad's or any other piece of hardware that has an Orbiter running on it.

As usual, good point. I guess my larger point was that we dont need topics on the progress of other projects every week.

As far as upnp, is this fuctionality in the svn? The reason I ask is because   while ican get mediatomb to play dvds and remux high def content instead of transcoding, im really hitting the limit of what it can do in a linuxmce context and am playing with coherence which seems to be a better framework. Guess the question is would I be duplicating things or no?

Sorry for the typos, ihate phone keyboards

The UPnP functionality I mention above is not yet in the svn as our 10.10 code needs to be re-factored somewhat for 10.04 but itwill be.

To some extent what your investigating in mediatomb/coherence overlaps but I dont see that as a bad thing really at all. Its worthwhile investigation as at some point you might be able to bring some new ideas to bare on what we have created or merge the two together in some way. Thats the great value of OSS...cross fertilisation and fermentation ;-)

Andrew, can you explain briefly how UPnP controlling work, please? I. e. let's assume we have core/hybrid, Boxee Box and Web 2.0 Orbiter. As I understand the Boxee Box will be added to the system as UPnP device. What next? How we can control it via Orbiter? Is there some special screen for that?

Sorry that I have upset you, but if you look through my posts you will probably see that I haven't been posting about XBMC or any other projects that are related since last XBMC discussion which was who knows how many months ago.

I only post things that I believe are useful to XBMC users (hence posting on users board), you reaction was like I was posting in developers board suggesting that xbmc is better or in any way comparing xbmc and linuxmce which I am not.

I would use xbmc and linuxmce both in my home.

I think we all have to realise that the world is not all made up of LinuxMCE and our homes are a reflection of that reality. I think its completely legitimate to discuss how other devices or software can be usefully integrated with LinuxMCE. This ability to interface to other things around the home is one of the most powerful features of LinuxMCE - I use XBMC myself in a couple of rooms controlled by UPnP from my home systems Orbiters.

Agree with Andrew. Also we can get some useful ideas from other system to implement something similar in the LinuxMCE.

hmm,

how can we even get that, when 99% of you won't even contribute to making a new UI to solve the deficiencies in Orbiter?

I swear, all talk from 99% of you. I'm sick of it.

Well the way to encourage people is certainly not to continually post negative comments in every thread you visit. Reflect on that a little...

As a fan of both LMCE and XBMC I am interested in hearing more about how you have approached integrating these two.

Because of some of the current limitation in LMCE (not playing blu ray and MythTV recordings, primarily) and some of the easy-to-access media built into XBMC (German News programs, the entire This Week in Tech lineup, the TED conferences) that will stream to your computer with only a few mouse clicks of setup, I added XBMC Dharma to my LMCE 8.10 box as an application by just following the ubuntu and linux build directions from XBMC's website and the LMCE Wiki.

So far, nothing seems to have been broken in LMCE, most of the USB/UIRT remote commands work automatically and I have added one more thing I can do from my LMCE box. As a plus, I tell XBMC where my blu ray player drive is and where the MythTV recordings are in the file structure and I can play them with very good quality. It is a win-win as far as I can tell. Although I am technically limited in terms of developing for LMCE and what I have done still needs to be tested more extensively I would be happy to contribute any way I could to see these two become more integrated. Perhaps the Hulu Player integration that was so well done by tschak909 could be a template for such a project? At present, I don't know enough to conceptually be able to begin. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

In Dianemo 10.10 we currently use the UPnP AV support in XBMC 10 to remotely stream video content from the Orbiter's Media Browser screens (ie MythTV Recordings, ripped DVD & ISO an m2ts & mkv files) to standalone XBMC based MM's. Essentially we are using XBMC as a UPnP media renderer and driving it directly from the Orbiter. You can still use Ir remotes or any other control device that XBMC supports to browse & play media too.

In  the future we will be pushing out an update that will support XBMC's JSON RPC API which will allow users to directly drive the XBMC on screen UI from the Orbiter too.

All the best
