... so i wont forget to switch off the lights in the bathroom. thats driving my girlfriend crazy :/
Well. Actually i found this page by accident.
I got my old Computer (Athlon 3000+ with ATI X850 [wiki said it would work] and 2gb ram, 80gb HDD) and threw a install DVD with kubuntu 8.10 and LinuxMCE into it. i want(ed) to use this computer as a hybrid, dont need the DCHP server.
First installation was awefully wrong, i installed kubuntu. Then i wanted to install LinuxMCE as the menu told me -> 2 Systems on 1 HDD.
I reinstalled with only the option "LinuxMCE" and... it did not work - pc rebootet and nothing happend.
Another installation (this time i tried the web installation) went wrong cause for some reasong during the process of installation the eth0 (i put both of the lancables into my fritz.box router) lost connection -> the LinuxMCE isntallation routine on the kubuntu desktop failed
a few tries later, i finally got the wizzard. for some reason every time i choose the vga output, 1280*1024 and 60hz (using a monitor) the wizzard just restarted on pushing enter.
the installation routine repeatet some steps over and over (dont know why) and finally i found myself on the linux mce screen where i could switch of lights, watch tv etc.
now mythtv isnt working. i got a technisat dvb-s card (plug and play as wiki said) but it simply wont work. dont have a clue how i should get into the kubuntu console (STRG+ALT+anything just makes me see a funny text with no possibility to run a SUDO or whatever) - anyone got a solution for this?
and after checking the forums and faq's for like.. 100 times i found someone that said "your media pc doesnt even need a hdd! just set it to boot on lan..."
im pretty looking forward to this project. its awesome! but i never found myself during the installation process like "oh thats easy". i am not that new to linux / ubuntu, but the installation of linux mce was a book with seven seals. if you want to create further versions of linuxmce i would be glad if there could be a A4 Page Quick-Start-Guide (i would like to do this myself, but... i cant get this running myself right now
)
and btw: is an orbiter just like a remote with an touchdisplay?
cheers
