What is your best HW for diskless MD ?
« on: September 07, 2006, 12:54:03 pm »
Hi,

I have to setup demo with diskless MD in living room with TV and Audio Receiver (Marantz sr5600). I'd kindly ask for your advices, opinions or your suggestions for this task. It should be quiet with as much Pluto's supported functionality as possible.

Currently I'm thinking on this direction :

- Case: Silverstone lc11m (potential cons: don't know how quiet can be and what is wrong that people are complaining on bundled remote and searching for alternatives)

http://www.silverstonetek.com/products-lc11.htm

- MB : Asus A8N-VM CSM (pros: cool'n'quiet, Nvidia graphics, don't know about cons.... )

http://usa.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=766&l1=3&l2=15&l3=210

- processor - haven't decided yet, cause don't know much about AMD, except that cool'n'quiet is working quite ok....

- cooling: Nite_man suggested :
Quote
I'd like to suggest PSU ZALMAN ZM300B-APS ATX and the processor cooler -
Zalman CNPS7000B-CU 92mm 2 Ball Copper Cooling Fan/Heatsink

Any opinion suggestion? What is your ideal diskless MD HW ? Maybe Core 2 duo would be better ?

Thanks in advance,

regards,

Rob.

Currently, I'm going to buy a  (LX8100-AM2BB-M2NPV Bare Bone) to test it with Pluto. It seems very attractive: design, functionality and price (just $319.00). Also, I like it because everything is there: case, motherboard based on nVidia with a bunch of IN/OUT, card reader, IR, remote control, VFD (sell separatelly).
But my dream MD is Mac Mini or XBox. I hope that during this year they will be supported as Pluto MD.

Well after seeing one of nite-man posts a while back i decided to take a chance and order one. I had issues with their online payment system and then ended up making a direct paypal payment to them. 6 weeks later still no case , after numerous attempts at contacting them i simply got an email stating delivery had failed and they refunded me. I am very disapointed but what can i do.

With Mac mini and xbox ... nothing. I'm still waiting LX8100-AM2BB-M2NPV Bare Bone from USA. But I already got Silverstone LS20M case with VDF and IR. So, today I'll try to setup a MD based on this set: case - Silverstone LS20M, power supply - ZALMAN ZM300B-APS ATX 400W, MB - Asus A8V, proc - AMD Athlon 64 PIB, cooler - Zalman CNPS7000B-CU, and RAM - 512 Mb.

Hmmm ... Strange ... those guys seem professionals ... We ordered and paid our stuff during one week. Now I'm waiting for the post delivery. dean_za, I choose this set just because it includes everything I need. You can build your own MD just buying the same stuff separately. It's a bit longer but maybe safer.

Hi Nite_man , dont you mean lc20m I cant find a ls20m on their site. The lx800 would have been great , appantly the us postal service dont know where south africa is.

Why didnt you go for a smaller case like lc11m ?

You're right. It's LC20M (http://www.silverstonetek.com/products-lc20m.htm). I choose that one because I ordered cases to build HTPC for VDR for 4 persons. But one guy changed his mind. So, I got one case for testing :)
