Installation issues / Installation problems, nothing boots up
« on: May 19, 2010, 04:31:57 pm »
Hi, I've installed Kubuntu 8.10 and updated the packages before my LinuxMCE install but some packages are missing. Furthermore, when i installed LinuxMCE using the desktop icon, serveral packages were skipped again. Then, when I restarted to open the AV Wizard, i got an error about a resume file not being found. The AV Wizard did start, but in the corner of the screen. Once I'd finished it, I was left on the original resume file screen. I can use Alt+F2 to start the X Server and load the desktop but not much is working in terms of MCE.

P.S. Every time I load the desktop I have to open the terminal and type:
sudo -s (then type in my password)
ifup eth0

so that I can get the network connection working. I had to remove NetworkManager from the startup to get the connection working in the first place.

Well, I'm having trouble getting an Asus AT3N7A-I to netboot from my server (It has no disk drive in it, just the motherboard and a 4Gb RAM module). I rolled back the BIOS so it could actually load up but after a point I either end up with a blank screen (HDMI, maybe I need to press 3 on the AV wizard) or an "Unable to connect to X server" error repeating over and over.

I also tried to hook up an Axis 2100 IP camera but couldn't figure out how to set it up on the core. It could be the camera's fault though, I reset the camera through the app for windows but I still can't get it to connect to it (The IP address should load up a webpage with the video on it but I can never connect to it from any computer.

Blu-Rays won't play, despite me adding the software for playing and ripping them. Also, any way to get rid of MythTV? I don't have a TV card on the core or the thin client so I don't need it. I removed it from the software list bit (not beside it right now) from the core/hybrid and the thin client from the media director menu on the admin page but it's still on the core and I notice it on the boot list on the thin client (which stays up for a while).

Finally I added a bluetooth dongle to the core and tried to add my N96, but when the core attempts to send the setup file for the orbiter program the phone accepts it but immediately deletes the message before I can open it to run it.

I think that's all I'm stuck with. I'd really appreciate any help you offer me from my senseless ramblings, I'm just mega confused and it's part of a college project I would like to complete.

Cheers,

Hi, I tred to use the Pluto MO on my Nokia N96 but it just crashes out before I see any screens to do with the program. The program should work on my phone fine (S60v3) but I've had no luck.

Anythign I can do to get it going? I've been plagued with problems with LinuxMCE and I'm starting to lose all hope I can actually get it running and doing anything I want it to.

Cheers.

Installation issues / Unable to seek on /dev/sda
« on: March 11, 2010, 12:46:08 pm »
I'm having trouble getting Linuxmce's installer to load up. I have an Asus P5Q and have set up 3 1.5TB hard drives arranged in a RAID 5 configuration (using the onboard RAID controller).

The installer failed half way through booting up with the unable to seek error and in red writing "no hard drives found".

Any ideas as to what happening?

Then once the Kubuntu installation starts open up a terminal and type
sudo su - #This might ask for the password you specified earlier during the install of kubuntu.
apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

During the installation?

EDIT: Failing at apt-get update. It's stuck on 16% connecting to gb.archive.ubuntu.com and connecting to www.avengard.org, then lists all the files it can't get on a plethora of websites. I can, however, copy the link address from terminal and paste them into konqueror and loas the pages up instantly. I'm currently behind a proxy at the college but I've entered proxy address in, hence the fact konqueror works.

Thanks. I probably won't be able to try this until wednesday so I'll see what happens the next time I try it. I did try the terminal lines you gave me, they were the ones that were asking me for permissions, something about a lock file. But we'll see what's what on wednesday.

Hi, I'm having problems getting LinuxMCE installed on one of the computers at college.

I'm using the 8.10 DVD from the download links and so far have kubuntu installed and running. The problem comes from the installer link that's left on the desktop. I click it and it opens the terminal to start doing whatever it does, then after about a minute of doing nothing a get roughly 100 lines informing me that the program can't find files at certain locations (despite being able to load those links in konqueror).

After another short while it tells me that MCE is finished installing and to restart to finish configuring MCE. However, when I restart the computer I'm back at the shell to login and startx.

I tried a network install of MCE and it kept asking me if I was root. A fellow student informed me that kubuntu had no root user.

P.S. I'm a total Linux noob. It took me 4 distros to get Linux on my PS3, ended up with YDL. Fedora just wouldn't do anything.

Users / Network boot and Bluray over network
« on: November 24, 2009, 11:55:33 am »
Hi, I'm currently part of a project at college where we're trying to set up a media server and thin client to play media on an HDTV. We're currently looking at what operating system to use and have come across LinuxMCE.

Unfortunately , I haven't been able to figure out whether or not LinuxMCE would be network bootable (a feature we decided on for ease of updates), and whether or not Blurays could be ripped to the server, then accessed from the thin client to be played back on the connected tv. This is anoter important feature as we want all media files to reside on the server so that upgrading with further thin clients is as easy as possible.

Thank you for your help and I look forward to any feedback you can offer me.
