You will also need to add a rule in xorg.conf that disable internal lvds.

Where can I find that rule and where in xorg.conf do I put it?
Sorry, I'm way out of my linux depth here.
Rule #1 - Be Patient - Rule #2 - Don't ask when, if you don't contribute - Rule #3 - You have coding skills - LinuxMCE's small brother is available: http://www.agocontrol.com

It's not HD tuner support that's the real issue, HD Homerun supposedly works great. It's the cable companies desire to force you to use their STB by encrypting so much crap that causes the problem. Most of my channels, including almost all the ones I record shows on, are encrypted leaving me with no choice but to capture from the STB.
My setup is almost identical to yours, the only difference is my STB is connected to the TV via component 'cause the STB doesn't have HDMI output.

We're using is as an MD very successfully (you need to update the boot image to include the NIC driver... see http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/R8168)... it works great for UI1 & Ui2 + Overlay. As long as you dont want a integral optical drive or any TV cards it would be possible to use the Eee Box as a Core too.
All the best
