Developers / Possible new layout for UI1
« on: July 13, 2009, 05:09:50 am »
Gentlemen (and ladies),

I need some feedback for a new UI design that was partly inspired by tschak's UI1 PVR layouts. I added a bunch of graphics and icons from a theme that I like on kde-look called Dark Glass by mentalrey to get the finished look. The rest, I just jammed it all together using Gimp and Openoffice Draw. I think this interface will work well with what I believe the community here wants to see in their designs and installations, but I need confirmation on this.

In short, does this design fit what LinuxMCE should represent?

I have created a PDF here: www.digilifellc.com/uploaded/LinuxMCE_UI1_rev.pdf. I know the file is a bit large, but the design is icon-heavy, and I'm using unscaled graphics with their native resolutions. These graphics can be shrunk down quite a bit if it is decided to make this UI a reality. Please let me know if this design is on track and if this design should be made a reality in future releases of LinuxMCE.

Also, as an experiment, I decided to apply this design as a UI2 overlay. I think it looks cool, but I wonder what anyone else may feel about it. I have a PDF created for that application as well: www.digilifellc.com/uploaded/LinuxMCE_UI2_rev.pdf. Unfortunately, this file is twice as big as the first for the added reason that I was trying to mimic the standard flickr screensaver images to get a take of how the UI looks with differing background images and designs.

Enjoy the show, gentlemen.

--Edit--
I did forget to say that this design is specifically for 10" and larger applications. Different layouts will be necessary for all other smaller devices.

Installation issues / How long does it take to install 0810?
« on: June 19, 2009, 07:30:57 pm »
I've been trying to install 0810 from scratch to installer 7, and its taking almost two days to download and install >:(

Could this be a NIC issue (I am able to download, but it's not fast) or a repository issue? My Core is a dual-core Intel, 2GB RAM, nVidia 9400 w/1GB RAM, 80GB SATA II drive. It installs LMCE 0710 in 1 hour, start to UI2 (clean install), so I know it's not my hardware, and I'm using Optimum Online for internet access.

I have followed the instructions on this page: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/LinuxMCE-0810_alpha2, and I'm open to any and all suggestions to speed this up.

Thanks in advance,

Help Wanted / ***CLOSED*** Videoconferencing
« on: May 08, 2009, 01:46:31 am »
Hellp all,

Does anyone know how (or if) the videoconferencing feature works on LinuxMCE?

BTW, is there any way to integrate VMukti into LinuxMCE or is that part of the development path? Just asking.

Developers / Which Virtual Machine?
« on: December 05, 2008, 12:23:42 am »
I am setting up to attempt a new UI version, but I know that HADesigner is a Windows application. All of my programming machines run Kubuntu. I've tried Virtualbox (not OSE) but it runs very slow. Is there a better program that I can use to run my Windows apps?

I'm looking to have the fastest running virtual machine and need some feedback on if VMWare, or Win4Lin, or Xen is the fastest native solution for virtualization. Any suggestions or applications that I missed?

I've been extremely interested in LinuxMCE since version 1.1. I even built my own rig (which I intend to expand) and run it in my home now. I want to be able to eventually offer this system to a number of people and organizations whom are looking for this kind of solution, but have to settle with less function and value for more money.

I'm staking my claim here. I want to be able to contribute as much as many of the gurus on this forum. I'm willing to invest in both myself and this team in order to get to this goal. I have a number of ideas to offer, and will back it up with blood, sweat, and tears to help this team reach its Holy Grail!

I have 10 years experience in home automation design, project management, and installation. I have worked for companies that have both a worldwide presence and local reach. These companies have ranged in focus and niche from lighting, to audio, to home theater, to marine. I have been published in my industry's (home automation) and adjacent industry (homebuilders) magazines several times. I specialize in documentation, back-end process development, marketing, and interfacing between parties (client to integrator, integrator to subcontractor, subcontractor to client, etc.).

I have run a business for 8 years, but see a better option to diversify my income, so money is not my goal here. I have 10 years military experience--4 year USMC active duty as a grunt, and 6 years USAR as a Drill Sergeant. I know how to make a plan, foresee obstacles, issue orders, and supervise.

I am a quick learner, thorough thinker, and an enthused scientist when it comes to technology. I don't just believe in this, I live it.

Please bless me on my educational way to becoming a part of this team, and helping us create a better product that fits my vision--the perfect combination of electronic entertainment, home automation, and computers. I want to do this!

Respectfully submitted,

Wesley

Users / Can the Embedded Orbiter be used as a speakerphone?
« on: October 31, 2008, 04:25:55 pm »
Other than the obvious applications (through your TV/stereo), I was wondering if this was possible as an alternative to a phone per se at the bedroom via a Chumby, or as a video entry doorphone using one of these: http://www.nobu-usa.com/products.html or one of these: http://www.advantech.com/products/70-In-Wall-Touch-Panel/mod_1-2JKQ2S.aspx

Plus a tethered version for the kitchen could be used in a high-end solution using this: http://www.origenae.co.kr/en/panel_t12.htm

Any concessions out there think this is a good or attractive idea?
