Users / Re: Light Switch Advice for a Newbie
« on: April 20, 2011, 01:48:02 am »
As it happens, I am starting from scratch. I asked myself a similar question and came up with the following.

- The main living room and upstairs loft where media centers are located. It's cool to start a movie and have the lighting automatically dim.
- Exterior landscape and porch lighting that turns on or off at certain times of day, or in response to a garage door opening.
- Outlets at front windows or other places where I will plug in holiday lighting.
- Outlet for my coffee maker

For the remaining commonly occupied areas of the house I don't have a problem with manually flipping light switches. In less frequented areas like the basement, I sometimes forget and leave them on all night. I think the solution to this is to install a switch with an occupancy sensor - a better, simpler, and less expensive solution than using LinuxMCE to do the job.

How might a person find "getxmls" in the source code? I'm embarrassed to say my method to now has been to blindly click on the source links until I find the file I'm looking for.

I know you checked the BIOS, but I had a similar problem that finally turned out to be an incorrect setting in BIOS. My board uses a JMicron chip to control PATA drive, and I think you have the same chip. Maybe you could tell us what you are seeing at POST.

Behavior when the JMicron chip is enabled correctly:
-If a hard drive is connected, you will see a message at POST that says the JMicron found the drive.
-If a hard drive is not connected, there will be a message in broken English "no any hard drive found".

If the JMicron chip is disabled, there will be no POST message about JMicron.

Well, from this link...
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Running_the_Insteon_PLM_Driver_for_the_First_Time
we find the following...

Quote
Running for the first time

Initially, the driver needs at least ONE active lighting device. To add a device to the Insteon PLM, you will need to hold down the set button on the Insteon PLM for 10 seconds. Then go to a light and hold down the on button on a light until the light flashes. The driver will download this device's database and attempt to extract other Insteon ID's from it. Then it goes out and PINGS those devices in turn, to find out what kind of device they are. Once that is finished, it attempts to download each device's database, in turn, looking for more Insteon devices. This procedure, nicknamed 'Spidering', continues until all devices and device links are recognized. Once this 'Spider' is complete, the driver reports all detected devices, to LinuxMCE.

I find this ambiguous. The work "initially" could mean before wizarding the device, or it could mean after the wizard but before using it. I called tech support at Smarthome today. He said the PLM had minimal documentation because everything depends upon the software. He said my light switch and PLM have never been linked, based upon my description of the behavior. The PLM set button only needs 3 seconds to enter link mode, not 10. The light switch should beep twice and the LED will not remain blinking after link is established. That has never happened. Interference could be an issue - I might try turning off all circuit breaker in the house except the ones for the computer, PLM and light circuit. The lights are on an AFCI breaker but this is not an issue. He said that the link is usually accomplished by the software instead of manually, but he was not familiar with LinuxMCE. He recommended that I consider purchasing a lamp module and performing my initial tests with that device plugged in to the PLM's receptacle.

So far all I'm doing is trying to get the 2412S PLM to talk to the 2476S (hooked up to 3 CFLs in the back porch roof). First step is to get the lights working with MCE, then I'll add a few more devices and create some scenarios. The switch does have a pull-out button that I can mess with. I'll call customer support tomorrow and see if they can help. Is there a correct order to doing all of this? So far the sequence I've tried is...
1. install 2476S switch
2. plug in the 2412S PLM and connect to LMCE with RS232
3. Add the PLM device in LMCE
4. Try to link the PLM and switch

Still no luck. I thought Insteon used both RF and power line to transmit commands so I took not special pains to install on the same phase. As it turns out, the modem was on the opposite phase. I used an extension cord to correct that, but still can not establish a link. I tried to reset both devices to factory (for switch: push/hold 10 seconds till it blinks, then do it again; for PLM unplug for 10 seconds, then plug in while holding button for 3 seconds). Then I retried the linking procedure with no luck.

The PLM comes with a 1-page quick start guide that is basically the home automation equivalent of the flight attendant brief "here's how to fasten your lap belt".

Does the 2412S PLM have a (insert strong expletive here) proper manual? The virtual swearing is directed at Smarthome, not you Michaelree - I greatly appreciate your help.

Still no luck. I push/hold the PLM reset and it blinks. I push/hold the light switch and it beeps once and begins to blink. The PLM and light switch continue blinking for about 4 minutes. Does this mean the link is not established? I tried reversing the order and doing the light switch, then the PLM but the result was the same. The Insteon components did not come with detailed instructions, and I could not find anything on the website. I am completely mystified how anyone can get Insteon working with LinuxMCE. Here is the log.

It looks like _if_ got his USB device working, so now I'm confused. I don't know if I have incompatible hardware, or if I need to keeping going with the USB adapter I have. I've had it working on Windows XP. I'll see if I can get it going with OWFS and Linux.

I'm looking for a serial adapter and I'm finding a variety from $12-$65. Is the Hobby Boards adapter pictured above the best choice or is their another part number I should get?

OK, but just so I don't make a mistake, I need to stop trying to use the DS9490R-A...

and buy a DS9097U-A...

Is that what everyone is using to connect their 1-wire network to the core?

I'd like to join this party and get my temp sensor working. After some initial problems with getting OWFS to install, I think I'm close. However, the 1wire device only lists ttyS0 and ttyS1 for ports and I have a USB temp sensor. Also, I don't see a way to create a multilevel sensor child.
