Installation issues / 1080i over HDMI with Intel Graphics
« on: August 05, 2016, 03:26:22 am »

My 14.04 installation seems to be working fine in all respects on my lcd monitor over the DVI port. The motherboard is an ASUS P8 H67-M LE with onboard intel graphics.

I am now trying to get the system to display 1080i so that I can use it with my old Sony CRT television, with component inputs and an HDMI to component converter. This configuration used to work well on my old 8.10 setup by simply adding the right modeling to xorg.conf and disabling the AVwizard overwrite. I previously had an Nvidia video card. Now, I am trying to use the onboard Intel graphics without success.

It seems that much has changed with the introduction of digital video standards. I expect that EDID may be somehow superseding what I have in xorg.conf. Another theory is the need to pass i915.modeset=0, and perhaps other parameters in grub to force the right timings. In any event, features designed to make digital video connections easier have complicated setup for analog monitors.

Many will say that the smart thing is to just get a new TV, which I may do. One would cost less than my time but I still prefer the CRT picture. Plus, my Sony is a 40 inch KV-40700XBR and I am reluctant to move the 300 pound monster out of my apartment!

Please help.

Thanks,

CDM

Installation issues / Minor Issues With 1404 Install
« on: August 03, 2016, 02:38:17 am »

I installed 1404 today using the instructions here:

http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Installing_1404

There were two minor issues:

1. Basic video codecs were not installed and hence no videos would play, including Sarah. This was true from within LMCE as well as using the bundled video player on the kubuntu desktop. It seems to have been fixed using instructions for restricted formats on the Ubuntu community page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

2. The UpdateMedia script is not running by default and thus not adding videos to the database. I ran the script manually as root and this fixes the problem though I have now added a bunch of junk to the database.

I have a few questions:

1. How can I get UpdateMedia to run normally?

2. How can I clear the database and get UpdateMedia to add only files from the correct locations?

3. Have I screwed anything up by adding the codec support in the manner described? I also added libdvdcss using the instructions on the Ubuntu page.

Thanks,

CDM

Installation issues / Compatible TVs
« on: July 04, 2016, 03:23:45 pm »

As part of my revived LMCE build, I am planning to get a new television. The wiki seems somewhat outdated on this point, with most of the information on the user pages describing use with 710, 810, and 1004. LCD technology has come a long way in the past few years, and is now the technology used in virtual all high-end home theater sets. Plasma displays are no longer being produced. I don't mind getting a used set, but would like to get one that is as new as possible while still ensuring integration with LMCE. I am hoping to collect information from more recent builds in this thread.

Doing some research, RS-232 is not offered on newer sets, though all have ethernet ports and CEC support. Either would suffice and I expect would work fine with my Denon receiver. On ethernet, however, I have read that Samsung no longer publishes the commands and protocol for external control through the network port ( http://cocoontech.com/forums/topic/28186-ip-control-of-a-samsung-tv/ .) Recent advice from users on what is working would be great.

If you see this thread, please respond briefly with the following for your LMCE TV:

Manufacturer:
Model Number:
Control Interface: (RS-232, IP, CEC)
LMCE Device Number:
Comments: (ease of integration, picture quality,  satisfaction, etc.)

Thanks,

Installation issues / Denon Receiver Control over Ethernet
« on: June 30, 2016, 01:46:38 pm »
Hi all,

My LMCE system had been dormant and living in a box for the past few years but life will now afford me an opportunity to rebuild. I have been reviewing the wiki and forums for updates and I am planning my new build. Thanks to all of the developers for keeping the project alive, and a special shout to Tschak for all of the great videos.

My new system will use a Denon AVR3310, which allows for both serial and ethernet control. Support for serial is well documented but it seems that ethernet might also be an option. Release note 28682 for 14.04 briefly mentions updates to IP control for Denon. What is the status of ethernet control for Denon? Is it plug & play? Is it better than control over RS-232? Please provide status or experiences.

Thanks,

Users / Cisco 7960 SIP Firmware
« on: December 02, 2011, 06:58:44 pm »

Hi, I have a Cisco 7960 that I would like to integrate with LMCE and have two questions:

1) What are the considerations for SIP vs. SCCP for this phone? The wiki advises installation of the SIP image though the Bmac2's user page indicates that his 7960 is running fine with SCCP, using the same installation instructions as for the 7970. I've also installed a 7970 and it works great. Could someone please clarify? Bmac2s page is here:

http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/User:Bmac2

2) Assuming that I want to use the SIP image, which version of the firmware should I use? The Cisco instructions, referenced below, describe that installation of anything beyond version 5 is irreversable. The latest version on the Cisco site is 7.5. If people could tell me which versions they are running, that would be great. The link for the instructions is:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/phones/ps379/products_tech_note09186a0080094584.shtml

Thanks to all. Especially the developers.

Hi...

Upon adding a new MD, I got the following error after the MD rebooted in the middle of the creation process.

kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

After this event, two previously existing MDs won't boot either, producing the same error. So, all of my MDs are down and I can't add new ones. The error appears after the initial Kubuntu splash screen.

All of my MDs are Dell GXE 270s, which I've used without issue under 710 and 810 with the onboard Intel NIC. I've seen other posts about this problem in relation to unsupported NICs but I really don't think that thats the issue here, given that two of the MDs worked previously. Help!!

Users / Upgrade Video on Existing MD
« on: April 26, 2011, 01:49:30 am »

I have an existing MD that is uses UI1 in conjunction with the onboard video card, which is not nvidia. I'd like to put an nvidia card in and was wondering if this was a matter of simply physically installing the card. Is the card choice fixed when the MD is created? Would I need to login to the MD and install drivers from nvidia?

Feature requests & roadmap / Power Control for Phoenix USB Microphone
« on: March 31, 2011, 12:03:05 pm »

I have two MDs with the Phoenix USB Solo microphones. The work fantastically...just as well as any conference phone, and I use the phone on MD feature often while watching TV.

The one thing I would change about the setup is the brightness of the blue LED on the microphone. Its blinding; especially in the dark. Is it possible to control power to the USB port, turning the microphone on only when SimplePhone is handling a call?  Then, the blue LED would become a feature...an additional alert when calls come in.

I've experimented with this unsuccessfully using this document:

http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/usb/power-management.txt

All of the power control files are there but I can't get any of my USB ports to respond.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Users / Silence or Change Ringtone on MDs?
« on: March 28, 2011, 10:46:04 pm »

Is there a way to silence or change the ringtone on the MDs when an incoming call is detected?  For me, its enough that media is paused and that the phone screens appear. My hard phones make enough noise.

Users / Wake on USB
« on: March 23, 2011, 12:03:14 am »

Hi,

I've just enabled suspend mode on one of my MDs and it works beautifully, though i needed to edit xorg.conf as advised in the wiki. Now, I'd like to be able to wake the MD with a button on the remote. The light on the USBUIRT flashes when I press buttons but the remote but the system doesn't respond. Pressing the power button on the system works as it should and brings the system back up.

I am running snapshot 23800.

Installation issues / Create Raid Issues
« on: March 29, 2010, 05:00:30 pm »

All,

I've just built a new 810 core using the Internet install process. Everything has gone smoothly through to the creation of Diskless MDs.

The next goal is to create a RAID array using four 1TB drives recycled from my 710 system. I've reinitialized the drives in every way I can imagine, including:

1) deleting old partitions and creating new ones via gparted
2) writing over the boot sectors ( dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sdX bs=512 count=1 )
3) resetting the superblock on each drive ( mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sdx1 )

Going to the web admin page on the core, under Advanced->Configuration->RAID, I created the array and added the drive as described in the wiki here: http://wiki.linuxmce.com/index.php/Create_RAID_in_LMCE

Then, the page shows all of the drives as spare and the array status as "DEGRADED / REBUILDING". However, the build seems to go on indefinitely. Letting it run for 24 hours, the status bar has not moved and there is no evidence of disk activity or of mdadm doing anything in the process list.

Does this the create raid process still work in LMCE? Am I doing anything wrong.

This was totally painless in 710 and I can't imagine that any of the supporting scripts have changed. Please advise.

Thanks,

CDM

Installation issues / Cisco 7920 WiFi Phone
« on: July 18, 2009, 04:05:50 am »

All,

I have a Cisco 7920 WiFi phone that I ma trying to use with LMCE. I've had limited success, though I'm not accross the line yet. Steps thius far include:

1) Creating a device template. I derived mine from the Cisco 7970 template. Specifically my 7920 template still uses the script configure_cisco7970.pl. I expect that this could be a problem but don't have a script to replace it with.

2) Creating a device instance with the correct MAC range

3) Allowing the CORE to find the phone and associate it with a room using an orbiter.

4) Modifying the file SEP0014F2C87386.cnf.xml, which corresponds to the name of my phone.

Essentially the phone turns on, connects to my network and then trys to connect to the CallManager. After that, a message of "Registration Rejected" is displayed on the phone.

If anyone has this phone working, I'd love to hear about it. My initial understanding was that it behaved essentially like a 7940 or 7960 SCCP phone. This may be so, though it definetly isn't plug and play.

Thanks!!

Installation issues / Firewire Capture from Cable Box
« on: October 16, 2008, 03:55:01 pm »

All,

I'm getting ready to try this this weekend though the LMCE wiki is silent on the topic. Its well covered in the MythTV wiki, however (http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/FireWire). Before I dig in, I thought I'd ask the if anyone has advice on doing this with LMCE. A few questions come to mind:

1) Is there advice on which card / chipset to get?
2) Resources for cable box device drivers?
3) Dasiychaining vs. using separate ports for multiple boxes?
4) Changing channels via firewire instead of with IR.

Again, all of this seems doable with Myth. Just wondering if there are any LMCE specific experiences or advice.

Installation issues / Diskless Boot to Kubuntu Desktop
« on: October 01, 2008, 01:59:43 pm »

Is there an easy way to configure a machine to diskless boot from the core to the kubuntu desktop, requiring a login and using using the core resident /home directories for each user?

The Personal Computing section describes that the only way to do this is to navigate to the desktop after first starting the media director. This way does not require a login. I recall however that this is an option when setting up a core. I'd like to do the same thing for diskless clients.

Thanks

Installation issues / MythTV Fresh Start
« on: September 24, 2008, 05:34:28 pm »

Hi,

Short or a full system rebuild, is there a way to nuke my mythconverge database and just start over within MythTV?

I expect that I have hosed my database in the process of playing around with various tuners. Now, though myth can scan channels and correctly grab listings, hangs when I try to watch live tv. I expect that it might be looking for a tuner that is no longer there.
