Installation issues / strange 8.10 install issues
« on: September 28, 2009, 05:50:08 am »
I think I have finally gotten my array of crazy issues figured out, so I am posting them here so that someone else may benefit from all of the hair I pulled out.

The problem:

Whenever I tried to install 8.10 a2 as per the wiki here:
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/LinuxMCE-0810_alpha2
I would get an array of different issues. They seemed to be random and plentiful. I did 13 installs (yes I am persistent). Every one of which was plagued by different issues such as: the set up wizard was displaying the video but none of the controls were visible or was terminating early for no apparent reason, failure to recognize the usbuirt, mythTv refusing to change channels on the STB despite the system recognizing the usbuirt, the orbiterinstall.msi file being corrupted, and the list goes on and on.

Every install would have different issues and I could not figure out the problem. After doing a bunch of surfing and reading I found a walk through of someone else's 8.10 install. Sadly I cannot locate the post now, it was not in the LMCE forum or wiki. But they went through the steps just like in the wiki. At the end he said that he was downloading from the Canadian repositories. I don't live in Canada and had been setting my location to GA, USA.

For my final install I installed the LMCE version of Kubuntu and set the location to Canada. Then I downloaded the installer latest file and ran the scripts. AH-HA! everything works perfectly. Maybe someone else can shed some more light on this subject, or maybe someone will tell me that it is coincidence, but it worked for me. Maybe it will help someone else too.

Good luck!

Installation issues / Green Flashes in dvd playback
« on: August 28, 2009, 04:57:58 pm »
I am having issues with .vob playback. I have a pretty extensive collection of movies stored on an external hard drive in .trp format. I can play them with GOM player with no issues. The problem is that I want to copy them to my core and play them with linuxmce. .trp files do not seem to be supported at all so I used convertXtoDVD 3 to convert one of them to dvd format. I don't want to burn a ton of dvd's to disks so I just copied the dvd folder to the core. It seems to work fine and shows up in pluto's database. When I select the file with an orbiter it brings up the menu and will play the movie. The problem is that about every few seconds it flashes a green pixillated screen for about half of a second and then goes back to the movie. The converted movie plays perfectly in windows with WMP and GOM player. It also plays fine with a puppy linux live CD. I suspect that it may be some kind of codec issue but I am not sure.

Does anyone have any ideas either for a format to convert the .trp files to, a way to play .trp files or what may be causing the green flashes?

Thanks in advance
Josh

Installation issues / 7.10 rc2 and Dish network
« on: August 16, 2009, 07:06:16 pm »
Thought I was home free with a perfect install, but then..............

I am trying to use the USBUIRT to control a Dish DVR-625 from a linuxmce hybrid/core. I have used the admin website to learn the IR codes from my Dish network remote. That part seemed to go smoothly. However when I try to test the codes by sending them from the website, nothing happens on the dish box. None of the commands work at all. This method works for both my television and the AV receiver that my audio goes through.

(I have used the x86 fix posted in the Wiki (Thanks for the great work Seth!) and that seems to make the onboard blaster work beautifully.)

After unsuccessfully holding the USBUIRT in front of the STB and sending the commands, I plugged an IR blaster onto the back and mounted the emitter end directly over the receiver on the STB. Sadly this did not work either. The USBUIRT and blaster both light up when I send the message.

The only theory that I have is that some of the Dish remotes use the 56k range and I did not get the USBUIRT with the 56k receiver module. However like I said it learned the codes without incident and should broadcast up to 60k according to the website.

Any other thoughts, solutions or tips would be VERY much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Josh

Installation issues / DVD sound and Remote access
« on: July 31, 2008, 04:56:29 am »
I am attempting to install and configure LinuxMCE and am having trouble with DVD sound. I have competed the install and configuration for the SPDIF integrated into the ASUS P5W DH Deluxe motherboard. When I plug this into my home theater receiver which decodes DTS and dolby sound, the sound from MP3s and pretty much everything else works. The problem is that there is no sound from any DVD or DVD ripped to the HDD. If I reconfigure the OS to output sound through the analog speaker ports, it works fine and all of the sound plays. I have read in various places that there has been some difficulty with SPDIF outputs on some soundcards however the Realtek ALC882M is not mentioned anywhere. I was wondering if there is anyone else who has had similar problems and if so, what did you do to fix it? I am also pretty new to linux so I might need it broken down Barney style.

I am also having trouble with the remote access/assistance feature. I have enabled it in KDE and in the MCE environment with no luck. I have also attempted to run tightvnc server and connect using the client software on another PC with the same results. I am only concerned with connecting from inside my network for now.

Any help that someone may be able to provide would be very much appreciated!
