Hi all

As I belive that many uf us want to try to reuse already owned or old hardware in general, but that often the Graphics performance is the issue to get UI2, this might be of interest:

The company "Albatron" will soon offer graphics cards based on the  GeForce 8400, 8500 und auch 8600 FOR THE   PCI  SLOT.
This means that (some) of these cards will have just the ideal gpu chipset for LMCE and that you can use it on hardware without a agp or pci-express slot (or as a second or alternative graphics card). Me for example I own some Dell desktops with integrated gpu and no agp or pci-express slott....so this should just be ideal for it.

See here for information in german: http://winfuture.de/news,40737.html
Add your own link if you find information in english!

I am looking foreward to test at lease 1 of these as soon as they come out.
Please share your experiences or thoughts.

cheers

Hi all

The motherboard INTEL D945GCLF, Atom 230 (1.6 GHz), i945GC is out now.
It really looks like a potential MD platform. Low power consumption most of all and small in size.

A german review can be found here:
http://www.tomshardware.com/de/atom-230-Hyperthreading-945GCT-D,testberichte-240070.html
An english review of atom here:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-atom-cpu,1947.html

I would like to start this topic to discuss experiences by users.
Apparently it is not availabel in shops yet (at least here in Switzerland), but should hopefully soon be ready to ship.

Looking foreward

Users / Minimum requirements for (pxe booting) MD ?
« on: July 10, 2008, 11:03:47 am »
Hi all

I am looking to buy an old notebook and to use it as digital picture frame and to listen to audio. Ideally it would be pxe booting. But what I am not sure of is what are the minimal RAM and Processor requirements.

Who knows or has tried?

Thanks

Users / WOL not possible for hybrid?
« on: July 09, 2008, 09:58:43 pm »
Hi all

I today tried to wol (wake on lane) my hybrid from my ipcop firewall with wake-on-lane and from a linux machine with etherwake, but it did not work. In the bios of the hybrid mb the boot rom is enabled and wake up from pci/pcie events is enabled as well. I tried with the mac of both nics. Its an Asus P5N32-E SLI Plus motherboard.

what could be the problem? is the problem that it is a hybrid? wol from my ipcop firewall otherwise works fine for other machines on the lan

Maybe i do have to modify something in the nic properties under kde desktop? i could not find any settings corresponding to wol.

thanks

Hi all

Could not find an anwser to this question in the forum.

Does the "follow me" function work with the Nintendo WiiMote? How? Or how could it be accomplished?

This would be a great functionality for the WiiMote since it also is such a great and cheap input device.
Thanks

Hi all

I had succesfully installed a pxe booting MD on a pc connected to a pc monitor via vga.
When I connected it to a tv by a s-video cable it did hang up during the boot. So I deleted the MD on my hybrid rebooted and tried to reinstall this pxe booting mde (still connected by s-video to the tv). Unfortunately it now stops sayig " failed to setup X ". I am not 100% sure but I think the patch cable should be 100 MB/s in speed (but if it was 10MB/s, would it be the problem?)

Any ideas or pointer for me
I would really apreciate
Thanks and cheers

Hi all

I have  a couples of old notebooks without onboard nic - network cards.

The best I would like to achieve is to set them with wireless pxe boot (maybe I will then only be able to use them as picture frames, but its ok)
Else, I would like to set them up with cabled pxe boot
and last and at least as a cabled md

but unfortunately they all dont have an onboard network card
some do have a usb port, some only card bus, all have a cd rom

I have meanwhile found this list: http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Hardwaredatenbank/Verbindungen#Netzwerk
Where i find pcmcia / card bus network cards compatible with ubuntu, but is this the only bossibility (if at all) ? Cause non seems to be availabel in Switzerland

any ideas?

thanks and cheers

Installation issues / Monitor surveillance cameras - How to set it up
« on: July 02, 2008, 04:40:26 pm »
Hi all
I am coming from http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Monitor_surveillance_cameras
I am just wondering if this description applies to the last version of LMCE, cause I cant follow all steps and it seems that in my LMCE 710 something is missing (without starting to write down all my steps right away).

So anybody knows if the guide does apply to the last version of 710?

thanks

« on: July 01, 2008, 06:52:06 pm »
Hi all
Just a quick question: If my hybrid or core is powerfull enough, would it be possible to adittionaly run vmware server or similar on the kde desktop to run some completely other machines?
I guess it should work fine (I guess vmware server runs on kubuntu)
Thanks for feedback and experience sharing

Hi all

I am living in switzerland and trying to setup mythtv with a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-150 MCE in linuxmce 710
The problem is that I get only about 4 different channels. This might come from that I dont understand settings like "pal , pal-bg , channel frequency table (cant choose switzerland !! maybe default or europe-west?) . Anybody has a hint for this kind of problem?
Thanks in advance!

Installation issues / Wii Remote Support
« on: June 28, 2008, 06:00:23 pm »
Hi all

I am coming from this http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=1246.30 and http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Nintendo_WiiMote

Here is my problem:

unfortunately I already have a problem at the first step, using 710 (yes, my internet connection is working):

linuxmce@dcerouter:~$ root
bash: root: command not found
linuxmce@dcerouter:~$ sudo su
[sudo] password for linuxmce:
dcerouter_1:/home/linuxmce# apt-get install libcwiid0
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package libcwiid0
dcerouter_1:/home/linuxmce#

this does not work either (first step in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CWiiD:

dcerouter_1:/home/linuxmce# sudo apt-get install libcwiid0 lswm wmgui wminput
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package libcwiid0
dcerouter_1:/home/linuxmce

I tried ssh root@192.168.80.1 from a suse linux machine but it did not accept the password (which is accepted when i sudo su on the hybrid's kde)...

any idea?

thanks

Hi all
I do not understand what is the preferred method of tv signal input.

Lets say I have digital tv for which i have an external box I NEED to use (cause I need to use the (decryption) card provided) which is provided from my provider...where/to what piece of hardware do i connect it to send the tv signal to? to a so called capture device (which I do not know what it is! explanation and exampels (working in Switzerland/Europe) would be appreciated) or something else (which sould be installed on the core I guess)?

And if I just get analogue tv signal from my wall plug, then I connect it to a tv card installed on the core?
Or can you point me to the right documentation? I did not find it.

Thanks for help

Installation issues / Wiimote: bluetooth stick with ssh ?
« on: June 20, 2008, 01:33:03 pm »
Hi all
just a quick question:
according to http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Nintendo_WiiMote you need a bluetooth stick with "SSH". Unfortunately I could not find any with "SSH". Who can give advice on that?
Thanks

Hi all

I am desperatly searching for LinuxMCE compatible mainboard sold in Switzerland or anywhere from where it could be shipped to Switzerland. I cant find a MSI K9N6SGM-V V2 or ASUS M2NPV-VM which seem to be the ones to work perfectly for LMCE. Any users out there who could help with a compatible mainboard?

Thanks

Hi all

Here in Switzerland to watch digital tv we have a box which we use by a remote controll and we connect to the tv by scart or antenna cable or something else. Now if I want to install a dvb-c tv card in my core system and then I want to watch tv on the media director, how do I controll the channels if the core is sitting in a different room? The box has no RS232 connection - is this a problem?
A pointer to the right section in a LMCE manual would be great, cause I cant find info about this point.
Need more iformation? Just tell me.

Thanks in advance for any help
cheers
