There seemed to be a lot of interest in this until I brought up that there is a panel available worldwide that is fully supported then the discussion stopped?  Anyone want to test this stuff?

Has anyone tested the MailX device?

Developers / Re: Programming Task: Learn Clutter.

I'm all in for helping create a really nice UI, but I'm completely missing a few of the skills required.  As Thom has said we all need to get involved here where our particular skills shine.

Areas I'm not much help with:
-Understanding how to pipe the lower level clutter code into a higher level language like xml.  I understand our goal is to get something solid and really nice, and firmly believe that we need someone to volunteer to work with the higher level stuff and someone to assist with providing the tools needed by the skinners working with those higher level tools.
-Creating textures/graphics

Where I do have LOTS of experience and can carve out enough time is working with higher level languages and partnering with both someone with an idea who can create the necessary textures, and someone piping out the lower level clutter code into a higher level language as needed.  This is how I've done it in the past working with JMarshall and Blackbolt.

I agree, it's all talk until we break ground, so is anyone interested in working it this way to get started?

I still stand by my opinion that while Clutter may be extremely powerful, it limits UI development to programmers only, and we need more people involved with the project.  The way XBMC implements their skinning engine is more along the lines of what I think we need.  Expecting a UI designer to implement their ideas in C++, or anything more complex than a few simple xml elements is just not a realistic approach.  I stress that we need the absolute most simplistic methods for creating/destroying screens and objects on each screen as well as placement of objects and controlling their interactions.  Having had a look at the clutter samples on their site, this option does not provide a simple means for these things.  Is the goal here to create some basic elements with clutter and expose them to the skinner in a way that it is simple to work with?

Pwned, feel free to reach out to me when you start integrating with LinuxMCE, I am quite familiar with the Security plugin having worked with Thom on the VistaICM and written the HAI integration.  Once you understand the DCE architecture of LinuxMCE and the significance of device categories, it's really quite simple.  There is room for improvement in the Security plugin too, mainly there's currently no command to add a security zone so plug and play partitions is not possible currently.

I have a feeling this will work with my mailx device that can be found in any new build from SVN.  Please update and add the mailx device and test this feature out.

Thanks,
Adam

I wrote drivers that support the entire Omni series of home automation panels from HAI.  These panels are tightly integrated and fully plug and play.  Please search the development forum for details of this hardware and LinuxMCE.  This code is available in SVN now and is still being enhanced.  PM me if you'd like to make a donation.

Developers / Re: Why is nobody taking on the programming tasks?
« on: April 15, 2010, 04:02:48 am »
I'm with Thom on this whole subject.  Yes, the curve is steep, but it's not out of reason.  Several of the members of the current core team can vouch they've seen me literally learn C++ and start turning out code in just a few short weeks.  That's working full time with other obligations, really just getting a few hours in here and there.  Am I as proficient as the core dev team here?  Absolutely not, but the point is I'm able to help in small ways now and am doing so.  That's really all that's being asked for, we need people to dig in and try.  It's okay to ask questions, there are plenty of people here that are able to answer questions and point you in the right direction.  They key is, once you've gotten something going, things start clicking into place and you get a much broader understanding.  Over time, the more advanced tasks will make sense.  If everyone posting in this thread can think of one small item you'd like to see in LinuxMCE and start asking questions and actively sorting it out, and implements that feature it would help a lot.  I do think that some of the programming challenges have been aimed at a somewhat advanced skillset, but I think the real frustration isn't coming from people not working on the challenges so much as not even trying to implement anything.  Rather than talking about the reasons why you can't, let's see some discussion about what you would like to work on and we can help point you in the right direction, direct you to the material you should read up on, some example code, etc. to assist you in achieving your goals.

You guys are aware that someone made a svn commit with an apk file right?  Looks to be JavaMO ported to Android.

This has been committed, but the current version is not functional.  I have supplied a patch in TRAC and the relevant sqlCVS commits to fix the device.

Caiman: I have to disagree with you.  You had plenty of opportunity for support that you did not accept, on the previous page of this thread I asked twice for you to post your code so I could assist.

I've been working with the "core developers" for several months now and have always been, at the very least, pointed in the right direction so that I could find the answer I was searching for.

Need to check my references for contributions: worked with Thom on VistaICM, HAI Omni Series automation panels, Email/SMS, dozens of wiki edits and, assisting members on the boards here.

I don't really care what you do, but coming out rogue like this, making claims that you haven't gotten support from the developers here is quite frustrating when I, while not a core developer, offered to help.  Not only that, iOrbiter has incorporated the same functionality as your application for quite awhile and is free.  It really comes off as a slap in the face to the spirit of a community driven project for new prospective developers to introduce themselves in this manner.

Hi Thom,

I sure wish you would have worked with us on this...

I sure did try. Asked for help on the IRC channel (to get the list of scenarios via DCE protocol) and chatted with you about this. Didn't really get the warm welcome I expected for someone who does his best to contribute.

In any case, I coded this for my own use (and it's really handy). I hope others will find it useful.

I am eager to work with anyone that is motivated to move this forward. The webservice in particular is just a hack, and would benefit from the team's combined experience to be more robust and feature rich.

And yes, a full fledged orbiter would be nice to have, specially on ipad, and it will take more than little me to code it ;)

Someone please show something, I've seen a few people claiming to have started on this, but then they disappear.  As I've said before I can help with this, but I don't want to double up on work, and don't have the time to put into the whole project.  If you've really started please host code somewhere or show something tangible so we know you aren't just wasting everyone's time.  The android orbiter seems to be in the same state, and there is allegedly code to use the PS3 as a MD. but that never surfaced either.  IF YOU HAVE CODE HOST IT SO IT DOES NOT GET LOST!

Caliman, can you post your code somewhere, I've been wanting this for a long time and would like to take a look at what you've got so far and see if there's anything I can do to help.

The sms side depends on your carrier's email-sms gateway.  There is one other screenshot I forgot to include that should clear that part up a bit.  :)

You use the Email Setup screen to configure the account to send email from.  Then in your scenario, you set the message to be sent, (ie. House Disarmed, Door Opened, Camera x Tripped, etc.).  You can then tell it what addresses to send the message to using a comma-delimited list you're able to send to multiple recipients.  That is how you would send an SMS message to your mobile, just send it to your carriers gateway.

You've got more criteria to be met in there than just the right housemode...what exactly are you trying to do?
