Users / Re: ERROR: Please select a device template
« on: January 05, 2008, 04:33:38 pm »
Installed 0710 not long ago and when trying to add devices from the admin interface such as CM11A or windows xp mc remote after selecting the device template and clicking Pick Device Template it won't add the device but just gives ERROR: Please select a device template. Any ideas ?

Apart from using the 0704 version you can do the following:
* Select the device
* Note the number
* Add the number below manually
* Click Go
* Click Add Device template

Not nice, but works.

Installation issues / Meridian G68 RS-232 anyone?
« on: January 04, 2008, 05:00:09 pm »
Hello,

I need to control a Meridian Soundprocessor. I found the RS-232 codes, (http://www.meridian-audio.com/lib_apps.htm), but wondered, if anyone has created a PNP script for this device?

After playing with some network storage together with LMCE I will not go that route.
[..]
[..]after installing the 7.10 beta2 I've had some problems, but it could be bugs with the beta or I could have just had a problem with my setup....  (shares disappearing but coming back after rebooting the core/hybrid)

This is exactly the problem I encountered. But it might have to do with me accessing the Samba server on the outside network.

Hello Dan,

interesting to hear your experience about the Fiire 1" boxes. Did they ever respond to your problems? From the look of the PC it is a great way, if you don't want an optical drive near your TV (like in the kitchen). But, if something does not work like it is suppose to work from a commercial company, I might get a bit unfriendly with that company.

Apart from Fiire, I stand by the notion, that not using a All-In-One machine is my preference.

Hello Dave,

the terminology can be daunting at first, but will get better.

I would advise against using an all-in-one pc, but get a decent flat panel display, plus something like Fiire 1" station, which can be bolted directly to the back of the display. You will be more flexibel and, if you go the Fiire route, you have a company guaranteeing LMCE compatibility.

PS: I am sure, there are other companies supplying bolt-on PCs for the VESA connector of the flat panel displays.

It seems a problem of a read error. I modified the disk_copy.c a bit to change the buffers, it just fails. On a different disc, changing (lowering) the buffers yielded better results.

Anyone know, if there are any parameters to be set during the read function to retry on failure?

Some more information. I tried manually copying the DVD to the harddisk. It always stops at the same position. Is it possible, that this is some kind of copy protection coming into play?

Hello,

during my journey with LMCE I tried ripping a couple of DVDs. Some work fine, while others cause problems.

Currently I tried to rip a Ghost Rider DVD. The DVD plays fine :), but ripping the DVD causes I/O errors  :'(. Other

After playing with some network storage together with LMCE I will not go that route. Maybe it should work, but my experience has been bad when using cifs or nfs mounted drives with LMCE. So, my installation(s) will not use NAS, but local storage. Maybe iSCSI is another route.

Andrew,

are you going to split the TV and radio part of the VDR channels, or are both available as TV?

I did not think about such a solution.

The main problem might be, that you are getting quite far away from the wall. Make sure your connection to the wall is stable enough.

I thought about implementing the MD behind the panel as well, but we went a different route and added an MD below. Why? Simple. Usability. One of the things people tend bring a CD or DVD home. They don't want to walk into a closet where the server is situated to put the media into the drive. They go straight to the display, insert the media into the device and want to start watching/ hearing.

Yes, it does add "clutter" to the living room, but in my opinion, it is well worth it.

Are you looking for a totally new computer, or just ideas for implementing storage within an existing system?

If it is the later one, I suggest a good quality 8-Port SATA-II RAID controller (about 450€), like the TEKRAM (ARECA) ARC-1220 or TEKRAM (ARECA) ARC-1120. Start with three 1TB drives (ea 350€), get a good SATA backplane (abut 100€) and you are set. With a little bit of luck you will end up below 1500€. I assume pricing in USD will be similar. You save some money by getting a 3WARE RAID controller, but those have some performance problems (or so I have heard) with bigger files.

BTW: I would not put all my files onto a single partition, because of problems with large file system sizes.
