Users / Re: Help me pick out a motherboard for hybrid core
« on: October 07, 2007, 03:31:21 am »
I am not sure if you can add multiple (e.g., two each) PCI cards on riser boards attached to two adjacent PCI slots.
I went with AMD, so it is not entirely what you are looking for. The specs are:

Motherboard: Foxconn N570SM2AA-8EKRS2H
(which is same as this Newegg item)
(has two Network connections - one for Internet from my home network and the other connected to an 8 port switch for a separate media network)
Video Card : ASUS EN6200LE
CPU        : AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ 2.1GHz
RAM        : 2GB DDR2-800
Harddisk   : 500 GB SATA-300
Drives     : DVD drive/writer
External Dr: Sony XL1B3
InputDevice: Media center compatible Keyboard/Mouse combination
             (BTC 9019URF)
           : Gyro Mouse
: Gyro Remote (not yet connected)
IR Remote  : USB-UIRT
           : Microsoft Windows XP Remote
OTA TVTuner: ATI HDTV Wonder (unable to get sound - not sure if it is compatible)
           : HDHomeRun (not yet installed)

Media Director ======
In my testing setup I am using an old motherboard with minimum configuration as MD.

Motherboard : Intel D815EGEW with built in Video/Network/Audio
CPU         : P3 1 GHz
Memory      : 256MB SDRAM
(Power consumption of this setup is only about 40W or so.
I will use similar configuration for all my MD where I don't much processing power like music players.
Beefed up MDs are required only to decode HD contents)

I decided on external TV tuner because it won't take up PCI slots or system resources. Not sure if you need much processing power in the core, if you are not using it as MD. As far as I know, MDs uses its own resources to decode HD contents and all that. So that means even if you are going to have core/MD hybrid, still the processing power required won't be too high. I am also very new to LMCE so take my advice with a pinch of salt!

Users / How do you view pictures as a slide show?
« on: October 06, 2007, 06:40:39 pm »
I am thinking of adding all my pictures into LMCE. But how can I view them as a slide show and/or with navigation buttons (next and previous)? Does LMCE has any such feature at all or no?

« on: October 03, 2007, 02:22:05 pm »
Just to clarify - you do NOT want IrDA devices as these do not generally work as Infrared receivers.

The USB-UIRT is what you want or you can build a homebrew based serial adapter (for a few dollars/rand)

There are other devices that also work , look at www.lirc.org

I am using an iguanaWorks device at the moment but I have had to modify source code to get it working for now.
I just received my USB-UIRT. On the device itself it is written "Pat Pend". I thought it was based on (or the idea based on) an open source project.

Users / [SOLVED]Audio issue (esp with S/PDIF)
« on: October 03, 2007, 05:37:36 am »
(I posted it in Installation Issues forum as part of another post. But I think it fits better here.)

My Core/MD hybrid setup was working just fine with S/PDIF through my receiver for last few days. All of a sudden it started making only severely distorted sound .. sounds like extremely over saturated input signal (scratchy, metallic). I tried even with another hard disk with a previous trial installation of LinuxMCE with the same result. In fact The problem happens in all the outputs. SPDIF, coax as well as analog. Sound is integrated in the motherboard which is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813186104&Tpk=N570SM2AA-8EKRS2H. .

It is very disturbing as I was pretty close to finalize my LMCE core -- even my HDHomeRun is on the way. It is intriguing since the exact same hardware setup works fine with Windows XP ME.

Thanks for any help...

I fixed it:  I tried to enable and disable SPDIF in ALSA using alsamixer as described in http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Dolby_Digital_Out_(AC3,_SPDIF)

SPDIF in my core motherboard works with LinuxMint when IEC958 is enabled whereas it works in LinuxMCE when it is disabled!

I tried with another hard disk on which I had an earlier trial installation of LinuxMCE. The problem found in that also. Doesn't it say that something is wrong with the hardware? Initially I suspected recent updates or configuration changes. It is intriguing because the exact same hardware setup works fine with Windows XP ME.

you can connect it to the LAN?
type in the IP for the webadmin on LMCE (the LMCE box's IP address), beneath the login prompt you will see a link to downloading the orbiters.

Well, it does take SDIO card for wireless connection, I don't have one though! I was under the impression that I can use it with infrared.

???

I had Optical Sound output working OK, I have dualboot on the machine.
It's a Abit IL-90MV board with Intel Chipset.

Sound was good, but all of the sudden after a reboot I get distorted sound, sound like a guitar amplifier set at full distortion. I tryed to rerun the Aduio/Video wizard, sound is distorted even in the wizard audio sample.

Please advice, it works fine in Vista and XP at the moment. There must be some issue with the Audio driver and/or some KDE sound daemon? Where are the configs? What should I look for?

Thanx!

Wow! Exactly same thing happened here! My Core/MD hybrid setup was working just fine with SPDIF through my receiver for last three days. All of a sudden tonight it started making only distortion .. it sounds like too much over saturated input signal (Scratchy, metallic). Initially I suspected a hosed motherboard. But when I put my WindowXP MCE hard disk back audio is working just fine. Confused :-(

The only change I made was adding a new USB/UIRT device. The problem persists even after I removed the new device.

Please help....

Users / Re: Which Microsoft Remote for LinuxMCE Windows XP MCE or Vista?
« on: October 01, 2007, 05:17:14 pm »
Where you able to get he Vista Remote working?

if yes which module (mceusb or mceusb2)
and which remote did you choose.

are all of the buttons working as expected?
any issues that you had to work through, other than not a listed remote.
did you have to update LIRC sources? etc.

If you fill real up to can you post your finding on the wiki.

Thanks,
Rob
I am getting XP MCE Remote -- want to stick with proven devices for now!

Hi,

Changing the IR receiver setting for an MD or a Core/Hybrid is very easy just got to Web Admin -> Wizard -> Devices ->Media Directors and then scroll to the MD you want to change the IR receiver setting on and select it from the 'IR Receivers' pop up - choose mce_usb. Next choose your remote from the 'Add Remote' button. The Vista MCE remote is not currently listed... but its possible that it will work with one of the standard MCE remote settings. Once you have selected the receiver and the remote you need then scroll to the bottom of the page and click 'Update'

Hope the above helps

Andrew

Absolutely! It's been fun playing with LMCE. I am getting HDHomeRun and a XP-MCE remote this week!

Users / Any hardware MPEG decoders for LMCE?
« on: October 01, 2007, 06:57:18 am »
I was testing an Intel D815 mATX motherboard with P3 1GHz for an MD. Everything works fine including audio and movies from hard disk as well as disk changer. The problem is that this configuration runs only the simplest Orbiter, but I want to get overlay format (Medium format with OpenGL). Also this MD could not play HD recordings from the core. I am wondering if I can solve these two problems by using a video card with hardware mpeg2 decoder. Is there anything like that which LMCE likes?

TIA

Installation issues / Re: Adding the Via Unichrome Pro drivers
« on: September 30, 2007, 05:46:31 pm »
Right... you need the Unichrome Pro II drivers to get UI2 support and they have to be licensed from Via by systems integrators.

On a side note: doesn't it really sucks? I actually liked EX15000G motherboard. It really surprised me when I leaned that you don't get access to their driver even if you buy the hardware from them -- it is worse than Microsoft's business practices.  I am sure I can live without Via.

There are actually several MCE remotes. Look at the follow post page for more information to determine which version of the remote you have.

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/MCE_Remote

Here is a post about new MCE Remotes which seems to point to the older XP remote.
http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=2517.0
I have the XP remote along with the Hauppauge Version which both work out of the box.  I do not have a Vista version, so I can not directly commit on the status of the Vista version, but according to the MythTV wiki it needs the mceusb module and not mceusb2 module, so I would be inclined to say it is not supported.  I know there is no device template, and this is generally needed for LinuxMCE to see and know how to use the device.  This would likely be a pretty easy task to create a template, but it looks like the lastest CVS version of LIRC is needed.
Please let us know if you get this remote working.

A simple search would have turn up the following post about the MCE gyro remote
http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=2308.0

Thanks,
Rob

Thanks for those links, Rob. In fact I saw those forum posts and mythtv wiki. There is little reference about vista remote among the users. For now, I don't want to configure LMCE to use mceusb instead of mceusb2 and all that! I am still far away from creating templates on my own. I have to learn the LMCE architecture and that is going to take some time (pretty busy finishing the basement). Looks like it is safer for me to go with Windows XP remote and later upgrade to Fiire chief once prices fall to reasonable levels. $150 seems to be too high.

One more question..

If I get the regular MCE Gyro Remote (looks similar to fiire) will it be plug and play? What functionalities will I miss in it compared to fiire?
