Users / What CPU for HDTV decoding in (EX15000G)?
« on: October 24, 2007, 05:10:41 pm »
I was looking at the mini ITX mobo "VIA EPIA EX Series EX15000G" as an option for a future MD.
They come with two options for CPU. 1.0 GHz Fanless and 1.5GHz with fan.

Which CPU is recommended for decoding HD programs?
A review I came across said that even while decoding HD program the CPU stayed under 25% load (with 1.5GHz).

maybe we have a some hw difference. my tuner card is a dirty cheap pinacle saa7114  with own wav device, have no analog connection to mb line in. they mayb have. but, the mythtv record sound so the problem is somewhere between the mythtv and linuxmce...
Well.. I get no sound even with my HDHomeRun.

Earlier, I got my ATI HDTV wonder to work with LinuxMCE - with no sound of course. I thought that the problem could be the unsupported ATI HDTV card and went ahead and bought HDHomeRun. HDHomeRun has the same issue - no sound on the live TV.  In my setup the issue occurs only on LiveTV and not on recorded TV or other videos. Hence I suspect the problem to be in MythTV configuration. I did not find any place to change settings other than tinkering with alsamixer (command line).

I am happy with HDHomeRun though. Being a network device it is more flexible and does not take up valuable PCI slot and also gets much less warm compared to HDTV  wonder.

asus m2npv-vm

m2npv-vm is used even by developers.

I even suspected Linux compatibility of my motherboard. Thank God it is not that! But the strange thing is that no one else reported this problem.

I agree with your opinion that it is not yet production quality! I would call it a proof-of-concept release. But the whole idea is so good that I cannot discard the setup. I already invested fairly good amount of money into it.

Users / How do I update firmware on Sony DVD changer?
« on: October 13, 2007, 07:57:13 pm »
I know that there is a firmware update available for Sony DVD changer in Windows XP MCE. Is that required for LinuxMCE at all? If yes, how can I do it in from within Linux? I am not sure if Sony supports the DVD changer on Linux platform.

TIA

dir /b /s c:\MyPics\*.jpg > filelist.txt?

TIA

If you are using a core/MD system you can configure the audio for the KDE desktop to use the SPDIF and everything will work properly.  If you are on a network boot MD then you can configure the desktop the same way but you will have to do this every time you reload the diskless MD.
Thanks for the reply Jeff. I looked for a place in KDE to change the audio configuration so that the change would be global, but I could not find an appropriate screen or command. Could you post a little more details on how to change that in KDE environment?

u can do with alsamixer. u must unmute the iecxxx. the u wil have stereo pcm output over spdif.

That did not solve the problem. In order to get audio through spdif, I had to mute IEC958 from within the alsamixer. If it is not muted then audio won't play even for DVD and also the setup screen sounds like crazy distortion (Sort of over saturated signal). But I noticed that when I can get audio from DVD the TV can be played through analog output.

Users / How many TV channels at a time?
« on: October 09, 2007, 11:54:25 pm »
I just started playing with my HDHomeRun, I got some general questions about TV architecture itself in LMCE.

Since there are two tuners in one HDHomeRun, can two MDs watch two different programs at the same time? Is it possible to add one more HDHomeRun to increase the number of tuners available so that multiple MDs can record/play different channels at the same time?

Linux MCE and Myth are two seperate programs that CAN use seperate audio paths.

If you are using the computer audio out not the Spdif or optical audio out then both Myth and MCE work properly.  If you use the Spdif (dolby Digital out) then MCE will properly output sound thru that port and DVDs will play peroperly, recorded TV programs will play properly also.  Live TV (Myth) is still outputting the sound out the computers audio out port not the Spdif and you will have no sound when using myth for live TV.

If you are using a core/MD system you can configure the audio for the KDE desktop to use the SPDIF and everything will work properly.  If you are on a network boot MD then you can configure the desktop the same way but you will have to do this every time you reload the diskless MD.

Users / No audio with TV

First the good news! I got my HDHomeRun. I hooked it up to the subnet and switched on LMCE. LMCE detected HDHomeRun and installed it automatically. The whole process was very smooth and this must be the easiest installation of any TV tuner card I ever did!

Now the bad news! I get no audio from TV. I do get sound from DVD, music and setup screens. In fact, even before ordering HDHomeRun, I got working ATI HDTV Wonder card with LMCE. Again there was no sound with ATI either and I suspected the unsupported ATI card or the drivers as the culprit. But it looks like something else is missing in my setup. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Thank you, Thom, for your reply.  I'm still kicking it around, don't worry.  I just can't give up...  Can't let it beat me...
If you don't mind investing in a new motherboard (everything built in -- video/audio etc) then it might be worth trying a proven motherboard. It does work, at least as much as shown in the video!

I followed the wiki page and got two of my pictures in the slide show. My pictures are copied to a different directory out side flickr. I am getting blck screens too. I think the reason may be that I just deleted all the images from flickr folder leaving all the database entries and probably that is causing the black screens and bright white fade-in and all that. I would like to find out exactly what is changing in the database while setting the attribute and would like to do it entirely in a SQL entirely outside the admin page.

Users / Re: Face Recognition Features
« on: October 08, 2007, 02:09:25 am »

There would be loads of uses for face recognition if it were reliable enough. Walk into a room... the MD recognises its you and sets the lighting and other settings to your liking, Follow-me using face recognition would be cool... just walk from rrom to room and the system would instantly recognise you and your media/lighting etc would magically follow you. Security applications are many.... recognise who is at the door. Log unrecognised faces and then indentify them as suspicious... have the system alert you if that person re-appears etc etc...

and what about twins?  ;D
LOL! Embedding an RFID under our skin would be more fool-proof  ;D

Users / What are the background processes not required for LMCE?
« on: October 07, 2007, 05:03:31 pm »
I noticed that LMCE starts several daemons (services) by default such as HP printing support. I am wondering if we can disable some of those  daemons for a dedicated media server catering only to MDs? Can anybody comment on what daemons are not required for LMCE and how to disable them? Thanks.
