Feature requests & roadmap / Re: Hardware Pre-install Check
« on: August 24, 2007, 03:03:37 am »
Let me add to this...

Not only is a hardware check incredibly useful, but it would also be useful to have a test of the video as part of the install process that allows the user to back out, try a different option, etc. would ease installation.  Having this done before the install starts would prevent black screens of death on reboot, etc.

Having the installer separate from the ISO would be very, very useful and would prevent folks (myself included) from using the wrong one.

Having the version numbers of LinuxMCE AND the corresponding installer somehow match, e.g. at least major release version, would avoid confusion.

Provide two install types on the DVD quick install, say a common and custom, where a custom install would allow you to do stuff like configure the network and choose whether to run DHCP...

Provide an easy mechanism to add tuner card firmware to the system so it can recognize cards, like my WinTV PVR 350 :)

Sorry if this feels like a rant, but I've been trying for the past week or so to get this working - it's too cool not to use!

They'll be more probably :)

Well I finally got it to work.  Next time I have to remember to copy all the ISOs to the HDD cause caching takes a LONG time...

I've got a working system not, but I'm back to having linuxmce not recognizing my WinTV PVR 350...  I think in a prior iteration I got MythTV to see it but LinuxMCE still wouldn't...

I read somewhere that the IVTV firmware needs to be updated so that's the next thing to check out  :(

This is such a cool package - I really want to get it to work.

Anyway, thanks to both of you for the help.  It's help like that that reaffirms my belief of 20+ years that some of the best tech help is online!

Well, clean install of Kubuntu...

Got the proper installer from the ISO image and ran it.  It asked if I wanted to use the NVidia driver so I said yes.  AY carumba!  System rebooted and then on reboot I got a black screen - no login, nada.  I couldn't even SSH into the box.

SO, doing the whole process over again (lost count how retries) and this time I will select the blue pill!

It's been a long day...  It wasn't until after I re-ran the install that I noticed your instructions on how to mount the ISO...

In the process of doing that now - hope it works...

Actually, doing a complete Kubuntu rebuild and then will retry the install...

I'm actually quite surprised by all the problems I've had...

I've gotten a step closer after MUCH research.  The liboobs error will go away if you do:

apt-get -y install liboobs-1-3

Ran the installer again only to get another error about libvte.so.9 missing.  This was fixed by running:

apt-get -y install synaptic

I also installed beryl because I saw a reference to libvte in some searches, but the synaptic install really worked.

So now I got the installer up and running but now have to deal with some more errors.

Here's a copy of the log:

Installation issues / install fails - about to give up HELP
« on: August 23, 2007, 07:47:07 pm »
OK...  I've tried everyone method to get this package installed..

After finding out that linuxmce doesn't support the AMD64 build of Kubuntu I tried the DVD quick install.  I was able to get this to function to a degree but this install makes A LOT of assumptions about the network install.

I tried a number of the suggestions on reconfiguring my router to avoid problems with the DVD install to no avail.  I'm convinced that a large number of the issues that linuxmce is having is due to a failure to connect to the net during install - and I can't find a way to get linuxmce to do an upgrade AFTER I've done the install and clean up the network problems.

SO, I downloaded the I386 version of the Kubuntu 7.04 live CD and install accordingly...  I download the mce-installer_1.0.0-1_i386.deb and install that after rebooting, but not upgrading, Kubuntu.

I try and run the install but get a gksu error - fine, I manually install gksu.  Try running the install AGAIN and I get the password window, enter the password, then bupkus!

Try running the install from the command line and find that it's complaining about liboobs-1.so.2 missing.  Found a couple of fixes for this that say to do a soft link to a prior version but Kubuntu 7.04 DOESN'T have liboobs-1.so installed on the drive - anywhere!

Some other instructions suggest that ssh, vim, bind, samba.  Did this, ran the install via command line again only to have the same liboobs error crop up.

Figured, what the hell, I'll uograde Kubuntu - still bupkus!

Somwhere someone suggested to get the installer from the CD, but Kubunt won't allow the ISO image to be opened - defaults to being opened with K3B which wants to burn a CD...

My system is a Shuttle SN68SG2 with an AMD 64 X2 5600+ CPU and 2 GB of RAM.

HELP!  I really like the idea of behind this package and want to get it to work, but at this rate I'm about done.

Has anyone been able to get the WinTV-PVR 350 to work with LinuxMCE?

Well I had the same problem...  I did an install using the Quick DVD and was getting repetitive MDADM errors and also RECV errors that I'm assuming are related to X.

I logged into the box to get to a CLI using the default userid/passwd of linuxmce.  I manually ran the AV wizard and was able to get to the MCE launch manager...  So far, so good, MCE is downloading updates and hopefully everything will work after this...

Ran into the same problem...

Brand new system with an Athlon 64 X2 5600+ CPU and am having to install the 32 bit version of Kubuntu...

I'm trying the DVD quick install first and ran into some problems, but hopefully will have them resolved without having to do a Kubuntu I386 and then Linux MCE install ...

Well, according to the wiki http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Mac_Mini, no...

Take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preboot_Execution_Environment.  You might be able to find a way to create a bootable CD that will do PXE for you.

I know it can be done with PCs.

Has anyone been successful in getting the remote control capabilities for the CISCO VOIP phone shown in the video to work on other, less expensive, phones - say a Grandstream?

If so, which and how :)

Take a look at the trixbox.org site...  They have other asterisk compatible cards that might be cheaper
