Any report on this case ???  I just ordered one but I am hearing bad things about the color of VFD or LCD
Have you got the lcd to work under LinuxMce??

Thanks

I just got the guts from Newegg today  I am going to build tonight. I spent a few hours yesterday pouring through the Ubuntu Forums.

Especially this part ---"I needed only install lcdproc and set the Driver in the [server] section of LCDd.conf to imon. Then restart, and it looks like it works."

If I get it all together I will try to install Kubuntu and see if I can get the vfd working.
I'll keep you posted.

Blair

That is what I was hoping. I do not have a via box to test. That was Via's response to my request that provide the Unichrome Pro II drivers to the public.
If that is the driver that will produce UI2 w/ alpha I will have a new Via box soon.

I just got this back from VIA.

Dear Blair,

The source code to the CX700M/2 drivers for Linux can be downloaded here:

Feature requests & roadmap / Re: Sabayon Linux
« on: December 15, 2007, 11:11:05 pm »

Sabayon is to Gentoo what Ubuntu is to Debian.(only you might actually be able to complete a working Debian install. A feat I have not been able to do with Gentoo)  I really like Sabayon (formerly RR64) and I look for the new releases just to check out the bleeding edge of Linux. I think Fabio has done a very good job exposing the everyday Linux enthusiast to the power of Linux.
It would be a toss up between portage and apt.
I would rather see a MCEbuntu than a whole new distro.

Blair

It would be nice, but  I have only seen a few people encountering the same problems we faced.

I know I am getting way a head of myself but I stumbled onto this http://smart-home-blog.com/archives/833#comments and was curious if anyone had a weather station connected to LMCE yet.

I have an Oregon Scientific WMR968 with a serial connection that I would love to connect to LMCE.

Welcome!

I am a FIOS TV user also. I have not had a chance to set up LMCE with my FIOS box yet. I am waiting for some more hardware and the 710 release.
I was told by my FIOS Tech that most of the SD channels are passed unencrypted without a need for a VZ box. I have a line running to my Hauppauge card.  I looked at my DVR and regular HD box and both are QIP6200-2's. Both have ethernet - USB- Firewire. I will let you know how I make out .

Funny. I saw one of these on the Make mag site a couple weeks ago, and have been pricing them on Ebay.  Neat little device and its open and Hackable.

Thread making me hungry for Double Quarter Pounder Value Meal. (*with a Diet Coke of course.)

I think that between the wiki Hardware pages and the posts in this forum most people should be able to put together a compatible system. There ae minimum requirements posted on the wiki. If you want a kit buy the Fiire products. I have made my purchases based on "known working" products on the wiki. The only issue I have right now is my CCTV card that is Linux compatible, but I still am having trouble with in Motion.

I am waiting on some hardware and the 710 release and I will add to the wiki.  Can we add a user page with a list of hardware we are using. Like "http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/DeadPenguin"?

Blair

I ended up finding more stuff to sell on Ebay.  Got enough to get an ANtec Fusion Black.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129030

Got it for less off pricegrabber.com ended up costing around $150 with shipping included in that price.

raid 5 with 4 500 GB disks will only give him 1.5 TB not 2 TB. just so you know.

I forgot about raid 5 being striped not mirror. Thank you for the correction. I like Raid 1 better since its a little faster, but don't know if its worth the extra dough

By Dual booting do you mean - PXE boot for LMCE and HD boot Vista?

250GB seems like a BIG partition for just the OS and LMCE.

Why not just RAID 5 (4) 500GB drives? It would give you 2 TB spread over 4 Disks and give you piece of mind that you info is safe.

I am still trying to determine if its worth it to keep all the info in the core. I am just not sure how good Linux software raid is. I am not sure if buying a 3ware raid card to do hardware raid is worth it. Might just be better to spend the dough and get a decent NAS. I just don't feel like reloading all of my files if my install punts or if I have to reinstall at some later date.

*forgot to add this the first time.  http://wiki.linuxmce.com/index.php/Create_RAID_in_LMCE

Local Sony store selling for $300.00.  :( Refurbs were $200.00.
I was tempted to buy one after driving an hour to check them out. Still can't rationalize paying that much.

Thanks for all of the help.
