Users / Weather Station
« on: December 15, 2007, 05:46:31 am »
I know I am getting way a head of myself but I stumbled onto this http://smart-home-blog.com/archives/833#comments and was curious if anyone had a weather station connected to LMCE yet.

I have an Oregon Scientific WMR968 with a serial connection that I would love to connect to LMCE.

Compatible Products & Services / Sony 200 Dvd XL1B3
« on: December 04, 2007, 07:13:58 am »
Anyone know why the price spiked on Sony XL1B3 units?

I understand basic supply and demand, but what made them go from $99.00 to $300+ so fast?

Any likely hood they will ever get back closer to the $99.00 price?

Users / MSI Media LIVE HDMI
« on: December 01, 2007, 09:12:02 pm »
Just got my MSI Media Live from Newegg yesterday.
I just got it put together. I got it hooked up via HDMI to my westinghouse 37" HDTV. I booted the pc to check it with a Kubuntu 7.10 live cd.

It boots and the MSI Boot splash does not fit inside the screen (runs off the edges). I looked into the BIOS to see if I needed to set output res or the output (HDMI) But didn't see anything like that in BIOS.
I booted Kubuntu 7.10 and it also ran off the screen.
I am not sure how to fix this. Any clue anyone?

Blair

Users / Hauppauge 500
« on: November 28, 2007, 06:11:37 am »
Starting to regret my Hauppauge - 500 purchase.
Thinking I might have been better served by a HDHOMERUN and an HD antenna.
With the Hauppauge I can only capture in SD.
Whats the point when I can get a 720p copy of the show of my choice off an RSS feed and bittorrent within a couple hours of the shows air time. On top of that the commercials are edited out for me.
Is there any chance of incorporating TED into LinuxMCE? http://www.ted.nu/

Looks interesting. I have not connected my Nokia 770 to LinuxMCE yet. I am still working out some home wifi issues.
I know the Nokia 770 can be an Orbiter, but could I watch live/recorded tv on it?

Compatible Products & Services / Need <$100 HTPC case ideas
« on: November 15, 2007, 07:40:20 am »
I have been scrounging around to put together a MD.
I a trying to keep the build a cheap as possible so I can hopefully have enough soon to build another.

I was looking at this barebones as a good starting point.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856110057
I think this is the  ASUS M2NPV-VM in a ASUS case with PS.

I think I can get the Asus mobo from the WIKI (above) for around $70. I would rather get my own htpc case. The problem is keeping in under $100.00.
Almost every decent htpc I have seen runs at least $149 with a PS.

My origonal budget was:
Mobo - $70  ASUS M2NPV-VM
CPU - $70   AMD X2 4000+
Ram - $25 Generic 512MB
DVD/RW - $30 Whatever is on sale at newegg
Case - $100 - (??????????????)

I've searched countless web stores and Ebay to try to find a deal but I have not found one that fits my $. Any ideas?
I've searched silverstone, antec, thermaltake, D-Vine etc..

Installation issues / Surviellance cameras/ and bt878 card
« on: October 24, 2007, 07:53:27 pm »
I have been trying to set up my generic motion sensing 30LED IR analog Security cams to no avail.

I need to set up the capture card and I can not find a device template for my brooktree bt878 card.

I know this card is linux compatible. I used it with zoneminder recently.

Is there a template out there that would work with this card?

« on: October 16, 2007, 06:02:04 am »
Is there a instal l/ setup guide in pdf or similar format? I need something I can print out and sit down and read.

I know none of our installs are exactly the same but I would like a step by step ie. install kubunutu --> LinuxMCE Install1 --> LinuxMCE Install2 --> setup Network --> setup rooms--> build weborbiter --> setup MD --> etc...

If someone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Installation issues / Need help with 2 nic standalone core network setup
« on: October 11, 2007, 10:47:17 pm »
I installed LinuxMCE via cds - because I wanted a Core not core/hybrid.
Everything has went very smooth up until the point where I try to connect to the internet via a pc connected to Linuxmce. (the pc fails to open any sites.)

I have two nics - etho and eth1.
DCHP server is on.
I used the default network setup. 192.168.80.1 255.255.255.0
connected linuxmce devices get 192.168.80.2 - 192.168.80.169 (or whatever the number was) the rest of the network gets through 192.168.80.254.
internet ---> Verizon Modem (?) -->eth0
eth1 ---> switch -->Home LAN.

I don't have the VZ router connected yet so there is nothing else on the network serving DCHP.

The VZ dns servers look right at 4.2.2.4 and 4.2.2.5.

I just don't get networking. Can someone lend some help? Please speak slowly as its now apparent I am mildly retarded.

Blair

Users / Need Cheap MD any Ideas?
« on: October 11, 2007, 06:03:52 pm »
Looking for an MD between $200 and $300.

I would like a small form factor with DVI or Component out SPDIF and Gigabit onboard NIC, and decent onboard graphics or an open PCI-e for a decent Nvidia card. Cool and quiet would be nice since it will be in my main living space.

The media Director I have now cost way too much because I had to add the vid card, gig nic, and audigy4 card.

I searched the forum for what others are using and didn't come up with anything.

Thanks.

Users / Can u Check my Network Diagram
« on: September 03, 2007, 10:50:44 pm »
I will have the last of my major pieces delivered tomorrow. I just wanted to make sure I had it right.
This is what I have so far. I will probably be adding 1-2 more media directors. Plus adding a SIpura 3000 for VOIP to analog phones.
I am unsure if my wireless connections will get an IP address in this config. (I will turn the DCHP off on the FIOS wireless modem).

Compatible Products & Services / Sound card with spdif for MD
« on: August 25, 2007, 04:21:04 pm »
I am looking for a sound card with spdif to connect to my onkyo receiver.
I have looked for a CL card such as Audigy but didn't see any that had toslink connector. I googled a bunch of cards I know of like the turtle beach cards, but couldn't tell if they worked 100% with ALSA. I know my old shuttle used to have spdif integrated that worked perfect with linux I justed needed to unmute the channel on the alsa mixer.
Anyone have a pci soundcard with spdif they are using,or could recommend?

Users / A handful of last minute questions
« on: August 16, 2007, 06:03:44 am »
Trying to put together my list of stuff I need finish building my core and getting my MD better video.
I have some last minute questions to clarify some things I am not 100% certain on.

Do I need a video card on my core if I am not running hybrid? (have a M2NPV-VM w/ integrated nvidia and dvi out)

If I connect to my hd motorola box via serial and set this box up correctly can this be viewed from another MD in the house? (ie. could I watch my hd FIOSTV box that is located downstairs on a md upstairs?)

I am looking for a half height AGP video card. I found a decent xfx 6200 on Amazon. I know it works with linux. Is there anything I should be checking to make sure it can do UI2 w/ alpha?
I know it can do the liinux eyecandy (compiz beryll). Its for a sff w/ a P4 and 2.4 1 gb ram 9200 Radeon PCI card.

Anyone have a cell trunk working in Asterisk? (want to be able to make long distance call via cell through Asterisk)

I have a lot of X-10 devices. I got the all out to figure out they won't work with my baby monitor in use.
Considering selling them and going with zwave. Is there a kit anyone recommends? I am just looking for a couple lamp modules, a couple dimmer switches, and a few motion sensors.

Looking at a Hauppauge 500 is there any difference in the type A or B cards? Should I seek out/pay more to get a Type A?

Blair

Users / Storage in Core vs. NAS
« on: August 04, 2007, 03:28:50 am »
I am building a core and planned on loading it with a TB or two of drives to hold all my media conent.
I am not sure of how LinuxMCE updates itself / Kubuntu.  It looks like a lot of people do a fresh install with each release.
If that is the case for the near future I would rather store all of my media outside of the core via NAS.
As of now planning on using one 500gb SATA in core.  I was looking at an infrant NAS but they are very expensive.

Anyone have any recommendations?

Blair
