That sounds like my first encounter with Kubuntu and Linux.
When you install Kubuntu you need to have the windows disk (IDE) enabled so that the Grub loader will recognize it.

There's probably a way to update the grub loader, or you can edit it manually to add the windows drive (but again, both needs to be enabled in the Bios)

I edited my Grub loader to display Win XP as the default so that my wife could just reboot the machine to get into a "familiar" OS.
(what does your Grub.lst look like?)

If you can't have all the drives in at the same time it sounds like you may need to update your BIOS?

Thanks for the warning.

Users / Re: Would Zonbu work as a MD?

Thanks for the information guys.
I was thinking about the Zonbu mostly for music in the "non entertainment sections" of the house, with only a very small screen. Or a webpad remote.
For the other areas I am considering Fiire units.

Installation issues / Re: Pre-install Questions

I read on the that I have to setup LinuxMCE as the DHCP server to get the plug and play network related features, such as plug and play IP cameras, plug and play NAS, and so on.  Is this true?
Yes, if you do not set it as a DHCP server it woun't notice these items automatically. They can still be added manually though.

Do I want LinuxMCE between the modem and the router, or after the router?
Between

In the computer I'd be (hopefully) using, I have an ATI 200m.  I have a PCI Nvidia 5xxx something I could put in, which would be better?
I have still to get an Ati card to work, my Nvidias work.

Am I right to assume that I need one tuner per frontend?
No, If I have understood correctly you only really need one tuner and that can stream the content to the other machines. Now if you want to record a show while watching another, then that is another matter

Can LinuxMCE access shares on Windows/Mac/Linux?

Yes, and also FreeNAS

Is there a WebGUI to configure LinuxMCE with, if I make the backend just a backend?

Yes

How many, and which, file formats can LinuxMCE play?
I would love to say "all of them", but I haven't tested all possibilities.

Are there any other advantages to LinuxMCE over Windows MCE, Linux vs Windows arguments aside?
Yes, accessing media is a lot quicker, and is done with a lot fewer clicks. (when I tried WinMCE I was shocked, I could just as easily just have used a normal desktop version and windows explorer)

Thanks for reading my questions, and responding if you choose to.
As mentioned, all the answers can be found elsewhere, but this project seriously needs some documentation on these things.
(Minimum reqs for different application scenarios), but my guess is we will all add our experiences .
For instance it was just confirmed that a setup similar to Zonbu works ok.

Paul (webpaul1) mentioned the WinMCE controller looks identical because it uses the same molds. But the inside is different.

I did a clean install and it works like a charm.
Now I need to get a dedicated server going.

I was wondering if this smartish device would work well as a media director for Linux-MCE
(and if it has 120/230V input, not just 120V)

I'll wait.
I did install a Windows MCE 60 day trial version, but I am safe to say that it will be gone the day 1.1 is released.

I'll wait and see if it's the same in the 0704 release then.

I have, but the changes didn't "stick". could be a Beta thing, or just me  :)

Are these triggered by the music, or just random animations?
I remember using Winamp plugins for a similar effect, was very nice on the "club" from a projector, but that was like 8 years ago.

I would like to add to this.
I would like the possibility to assign fixed IPs to units as I use Terminal Server a lot and the Windows machine I would like to connect to is not the core. So I would have to know the IP, even if the core should be down.

(Or can I connect to LMCE core using a Windows remote desktop and then go to other window/Linux machines from there? guess this is more of a Linux question)

Installation issues / Keyboard layout defaults/switches to US keyboard

And since I don't use a US keyboard I find that problematic :-)

I had that problem in Beta 2 so I made sure to add a user during the LMCE install. (RC)
I could then log into the admin site with that user.

Not sure why, but it seems it asks for a LMCE user/pass combo, and not a Kubuntu one (if that makes sense)
You could possibly add a new user from the orbiter?
(I did not try this)

I tried apt-get as well, but could not get it to work either (then again, as i said I am new to this and may have messed up something).
I wanted to install a "share browser" to easily mount network shares in Kubuntu so that LMCE would see them without acting as a DHCP server.
