Installation issues / File server trouble
« on: July 31, 2007, 03:55:31 pm »
When LinuxMCE starts, it keeps seeing my file server (W2K3) and asks if I want to use it. No matter how many times I say yes, it asks again later. Is there anything additional i need to do, or that I could do in the admin site to set up the file server with the shares. I don't know much about Linux. Is there anything I need to do on the W2K3 side or do I need to set up some sortof samba thing in Kubuntu/LinuxMCE?

Thanks. I will look into some boards with that chipset and maybe try one out.

It could be a pain and I don't even know if it is the problem....what about the BIOS version? You might want to check and see if you need to flash it to a newer version. I had a problem with my ASUS board until I did that. Now mine is working great. There was a thread on ASUS boards and BIOS versions and a wiki too I think.

I don't know a lot about DVR cards. I would like to do the mythtv thing with Hauppauge or whatever; but what I need to figure out is how to do security cams, other than through IP cams. Is there a DVR CCTV card that is supported in LinuxMCE? Plans to support any?

I don't really know enough about Insteon and X10 to say how they are compared to X10. I only went with Z-Wave because of the LinuxMCE support. The range is about 30 feet ;but it also uses a mesh network. The controller for LinuxMCE only needs to be within 30 feet of one of the switches. That switch will talk to all the others on down the line to find the correct one and do what was sent to it. You will need a hand remote control though. You need to program that remote with all the devices in the Z-Wave network. Then, you send all the info from that remote to the zcu000 controller. I finally got mine working this weekend. I only had 2 switches to do. I didn't want to put a ton of money into it if it wasn't going to be what I needed; but so far it seems like it will be fine. You can get temperature control devices but they are expensive and I dont know about the compatibility of those with LinuxMCE. I will probably be getting an Omni security panel and use that to control the temperature. Taking this one hardware piece at a time to make sure it works and i have the time to do it right.

I recently bought a zcu000 from here:

http://stores.ebay.com/youautomateit

I don't know if they still have any though. It was just a week ago I bought it and I just got it working with everything this weekend. Sorry, I don't know of any others that work with it right now.

Installation issues / Re: Linux MCE 1.1b2 installation woes...
« on: July 27, 2007, 05:10:33 pm »
If you have the time i would get RC1. This fixes that problem by removing some stuff that breaks the network connection in the installation. Theres a few other threads on it if you dont want to get the new one. You have to remove the network konfigurator and reinstall it after and stuff like that. more pain than its worth i think when its fixed (along with many other things) in the new one.

Installation issues / Re: linuxMCE 1.1 RC1 disc confusion, mirrors
« on: July 27, 2007, 05:06:51 pm »
The first CD is the Linuxmce Packages CD. The second is the Cache CD. Then it wants the Kubuntu Live CD/DVD third. I think at least....that's how i did it. I used ISOs for the Linuxmce CDs and then the installer cached the Kubuntu DVD for me.

i installed it today. worked ok so far. its actually has videos during the setup now. i dont actually have any devices to setup except a zcu000, that i am supposing i have to do manually as it wasnt detected. i did have trouble getting the admin page to open. theyve cut out updates through kubuntu and suppsedly linuxmce handles updates for both kubuntu and linuxmce. i have yet to find a way to update manually or anything about updates at all. i tried changing the resolution also....it said that it had to restart and that when it did the audio video wizard would start but it didnt. so...guess i will work on that some. it uses the kubuntu live cd during the install also. i used isos for linuxmce packages and for the cahce cd and then just put the kubuntu dvd in. it cahced the kubuntu dvd to the hard drive and went throught the install. i didnt check any logs or anything and only spent a couple hours on it. much smoother than 1.0 i can tell you that much. well...anyway....hope to see more soon about what peoplke like/dislike and how its all going. once i get it going nicely then ill ghost it and start getting additional hardware to try and add on.

do you have some suggestions for a Z-Wave controller? i know the usb intermatic doesnt work and i have heard about...zcsu000 or something...i found it once but there werent any in stock.ay others you can confirm work?

LOL...no....HDMI is much higher than DVI. HDMI 1.3 carries 10.2 Gbps. Thats exactly why it carries sound and video.

Installation issues / Re: Could not resolve...

I ran into this problem also. Just take note of whatever network settings you have....i used a static ip with the gateway and DNS info in there. When you start to see its not resolving stuff...go into the network manager an input it again. Make sure you also click teh default gateway tab and put it in there. Hope it works that way for you...thats the only solution i came up with. I had read in other places that removing the Kubuntu network manager entirely worked. idk.

Installation issues / Re: Installer won't launch on Ubuntu 7.04
« on: June 06, 2007, 06:00:31 pm »
um, no. you were both confused/misunderstood.

Kubuntu 7.04 + Linuxmce 1.1B2
Ubuntu 6.10 + Linuxmce 1.0

If you have a problem using 6.10 and 1.0, maybe you should try 1.1B2 with Kubuntu 7.04. A lot of people had trouble with 1.0 and Ubuntu 6.10 that were solved with 1.1B2.

I would first try redownloading the CDs. I had the same problem. I tried installing all those dependencies manually and it just wouldnt fly. I finally tried downloading the CDs and after that the installation went fine.
