Users / Re: ASUS M3A78-EM and IDE drives

That's exactly how I have my core hooked up- hdd and dvd-rw drive connected on a single IDE cable on the M3A78-EM.

I use a nvidia 8500 gt to drive my video- get UI2 with overlay and am powering a 52" rear projection tv over dvi...

I'll let Thom confirm,  but my understanding is that the information needed to get past the initial splash screen needs to be downloaded from the core- hence the wireless configuration.

I don't see why you couldn't use a wired pcmcia card (not sure which ones are supported) and boot everything off of that- certainly less portable with the cat 5 tether.

And, to my knowledge, there is no "desktop" in the sense of Kubuntu options menus, web browser, etc other than what is provided on LinuxMCE's orbiter UI1.  There was a question posted earlier about getting a web browser on these, but I think it's currently only on the "to-do" list.

Other forums (fatwallet for example) require the user to check a box saying they've read certain text for the first 10 posts.  If I remember correctly, it was just disclaimer about the site and the rules you were expected to follow...

Is it possible to get a sticky that says Fiire is out of business... lol, seems like we see a new one of these posts every other day.

Also maybe a search feature for the forums and list of frequently asked questions for the other FAQs.  :)

Installation issues / Re: 3 DHCP in same network

Thank you Andrew-  that was exactly what I was saying in my first post in the thread, but started second guessing myself after some of the other posts...

Installation issues / Re: 3 DHCP in same network

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what cyf4746 was asking originally, but it's still not clear why running any number of router/switches/hubs before connecting to LMCE's WAN port makes any difference.  Isn't this exactly what ISPs do from some backbone to your local connection?  Why would LMCE care if it is getting an IP address from your ISP vs from your router?

Understandably, yes, there should be no DHCPs downstream of LMCE, but upstream or even level with LMCE?  The only way I can see that there would be an issue is if your DHCP servers were serving ip address on both the LAN ports and the WAN port.  And in what cases would you want a router that servers a ip addess on the same port that it gets its ip other than if you're trying to setup LMCE as a 1 nic setup?  I've been running the same setup since the first LMCE video was posted on digg (2 years ago) and if the routers are fighting I have yet to notice any effects on bandwidth or ip address assignment.

Without a doubt, if you're new to LMCE (or hope to get support from the forum) get a system with 2 nics and make LMCE the first in line for your local network and disable all other DHCP servers.

I have an n-vidia 8500 gt- it's fanless but my core is currently very well ventilated  (don't think either of the sides are currently attached).  I tried the onboard for 1 install I think before the 710 was officially released and nothing since.

I know the push is to use open source as much as possible, but for those familiar with SIP does Skype's addition of this feature make it any more LMCE friendly?

Installation issues / Re: Which Gigabit NIC to buy?
March 23, 2009, 05:35:41 PM
The ones you list look like they're all PCI, not PCI-e.  For a PCI-e option:

I bought the one from this thread:  http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=6806.0

Here's the direct link  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166019&Tpk=33-166-019

It is in my core and runs my internal network- no issues what-so-ever.  It works out of the box with 710 and is cheap.  Seth mentioned he couldn't get it to PXE boot, but as that I have it in my core that's not a problem.

I have 3 as well, but I cascade them-
cable modem goes to first dhcp serving router
    |->  LMCE core plugs into one port- serves XX boxes throughout house
    |->  WAN port on second router plugs into another port and serves few other boxes in house

Note- both LMCE and second router are only serving addresses down the pool- not up.  The second router is not trying to give LMCE an addess and LMCE is not trying to give the second router an address.

YES all of this could be done with LMCE as the first dchp server and turn the dhcp serving setting off on the other two routers.  I don't because 1) I don't trust/understand the LMCE firewall  2) when static IP addresses were setup on NAS's, skype phone, etc my LMCE builds would last about a week and I haven't taken the time to reconfigure the system with LMCE first...

You need to watch out on these as I said before that you get one that will connect to the unit- darkcirca knows what she is talking about.  As I found, NOT ANY CHIP WILL DO!

Just a warning

I tried that route a little as well with the same "little luck".  I couldn't figure out how to get the bios to boot from that slot- it seemed like based on the available options and motherboard connections that the option was available in the bios to boot from the CF slot, but I was never successful.

The ones that I can find:  http://ec.transcendusa.com/product/ItemDetail.asp?ItemID=TS512MDOM44H-S  appear to be the taller sizes:  Size: 46.0mm x 28.0mm x 7.12mm

The other ones are "out of stock or not on shelf".  Where did you find the smaller ones?

Yes, and beware!

I have yet to get one of mine working as a result of it.  Long story short, I tried to replace the internal flash chip (very easy) with a different capacity chip.  It's a 44 pin horizontal ide flash drive-  simple right?  Well turns out there are at least 2 different sized connectors for these chips.  I found that the chip that I ordered had a 5mm?? tall connector piece whereas the ones that fit these devices are 2.5mm??  Guessing at the heights- but something similar to that.  I have yet to find a supplier...

I've tried cutting down the height of the connector and soldering off the pins from the original and put the old connector on the new chip.

Should be a simple (and relatively cheap) process, if you can find a supplier.  If you do, let me know.
