Did the nVidia beta driver (100. . .) do anything else better? Is it worth switching?

Not that I could tell.  I get the impression that the majority of the changes to the drivers are to support new cards and not to improve performance.  It's a shame.

I agree that automatically switching would be better.

In Xine you are supposed to be able to press 'a' to switch between aspect ratios on the fly.  I verified that this isn't supported in the Xine_Player.  I really need a fix for this one.  The only content that's displayed properly on my 16:9 TV is HD recordings.

When can I find the source code for the Xine_Player?

Users / nVidia playback problem
« on: June 01, 2007, 05:07:23 pm »
Since installing 1.1 and Kubuntu 7.04, I've noticed that I'm having difficulty getting smooth video playback. It doesn't matter what type of content I try to play.  SD and HD material display the same symptom.  There's a lot of tearing in the image and playback is jumpy.  The problem exists using both xv and xvmc/xxmc, but the problem is worse when using xvmc.  I did some investigation and isolated the problem to the Composite extension in the xorg.conf file.

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection

If I set Composite to "Disable" the playback is smooth.  It appears to be an nVidia driver issue with either KDE or Ubuntu 7.04, but I'm not sure which.  People are having tons of issues with the current nVidia drivers and Ubuntu over at the nvNews forums.  The most recent nVidia drivers have exhibit this problem on my box.  I've tried 9755, the latest legacy driver, and the 100.xx nVidia beta driver.   The catch is that disabling Composite prevents me from using UI2 with alpha-blending.  I can still run UI2 with Masking however, so all is not lost.

I wanted to point this out in case others are seeing playback issues with nVidia cards.  Here are my system specs.

Athlon64 3500+
6600GT (AGP)
2GB dual channel RAM
nVidia 9755 driver (same issue with beta 100.xx beta driver)
Avermedia A180 ATSC\QAM card
Olevia 532H HDTV connected via DVI

From the Admin page navigate to the Xine player device (pullup the device list in the left hand column).  You'll see a deinterlacing options field.  Depending on the deinterlacing level you selected from the Media Director page (high, highest, etc) it will adjust the Tvtime options that are used for post processing the image.  If you manually edit the settings from the Xine Player page, pluto will remember them as "Custom".  The default options are pretty good, but I don't necessary want that much post processing while watching HD since the image is pretty good to start with.

I hope that helps.

I came across the recommendation to use the DisplaySize option from this link:
http://www.kingcot.eclipse.co.uk/unichrome/unichromeTvOut.html
Upon further investigation you can find a description of the problem in the xine documentation.

Unfortunately, it doesn't fix the problem inside of LMCE.  I'm glad sharlee_angelo clarified that the problem is related the Xine_Player.  The funny thing is that I'm about 90% sure that I eventually got the playback to work correctly in of LMCE 1.0.  I was playing with the custom deinterlacing options, and about that same time it started working.  The Xine_Player may not support the API to change aspect ratio, but I'm wondering if there are other options that are supported that essentially produce the result we are looking for.

Currently with 1.1 Beta2, HD recordings are displayed correctly on my 16:9 TV,  but SD and DVD's get squished horizontally.  I hope this one gets fixed soon.  The work around is to watch your recordings through the Myth Recordings screen, but that's not as convenient.  It also seems to work if you play content back from MythVideo.

I was able to get the guide to work by starting TV and then holding down F6. It seems to work pretty well on my system.

Sweet!!  The tumbling guide works fine for TV and DVD browsing.  Thanks a ton.

You can manually run the mythtv setup from the orbiter and add the card.  It's under the far right menu button (don't recall what it's called).  Click the button then select 'Computing' and you should see the mythTV setup option.  Configure it just like you did for Myth and you'll be good to go.  I don't know how to add it via the web admin, but that would be useful to know.

Installation issues / Re: Is LMCE Ready For Public Consumption?
« on: May 25, 2007, 11:54:29 pm »
Here's my working setup:

  • Abit UL8 motherboard
  • Athlon 64 3500+ CPU
  • Nvidia 6600GT AGP card (I'm using DVI)
  • 2 GB of Dual channel RAM
  • Onboard audio using SPDIF connection for 5.1 sound (worked out of the box).
  • Hauppage PVR-150 NTSC card (worked out of the box)
  • Avermedia A180 ATSC card (had to manually configure it)
  • 4 port Firewire card (haven't tried it yet)
  • Harmony Remote using the Windows Media Center IR box via USB (worked out of box)
  • Olevia 532H LCD Monitor connected via a DVI->HDMI converter
  • I'm using UI2 with Alpha Blending at 720p (had to fight with it to get it working)

Follow this guide to setup the Avermedia A180 card:

People need to adjust their expectations.  Unfortunately the demo video set the bar pretty high.  This is effectively still a beta product. The majority of problems people are having are related to hardware incompatibility.  That's completely understandable at this point.  It takes people like us to report our problems so that they can be fixed in future releases.

If you want to install LMCE then be prepared to spend multiple days getting it to work properly.  I currently have a fully functional system (although my HD playback is less than stellar).  The in-laws were in town last weekend and we spent 30 minutes sitting around the TV watching the screen saver.  That feature alone make it worth the effort in my opinion.

If you only want to spend a few hours then install KnoppMyth.  My buddy just assembled a 4 tuner HTPC from scratch and installed KnoppMyth in one evening.  He came in this morning and said that he was watching TV before he went to bed.  How did he do it? He made sure that the hardware he bought was supported.

My 2 cents.

I see.  You were referring to the "tumbling" browser that's available when you select media->videos.  That does indeed work as advertised.  I was expecting to see a similar "tumbling view" for the program guide and recorded shows after you've started watching TV.  Instead we get directed the generic MythTV guide and recording screens.

However, when running MythTV on the onscreen orbiter, the picture was jerky (it wasn't like this on the old install), also the fancy 3d channel switcher menu on the menu button took far too long to load, and behaved slowly and unresponsively when it did.

What do you mean by the "fancy 3d channel switcher menu"?  How exactly do you navigate to that?

I think that you need to select UI1 or UI2 with alpha blending for that to  be available... I may have that wrong but I think that is the case.

I'm running UI2 with alpha blending.  When you hit "guide" it brings you to the standard mythTV guide.  When you hit "recordings" it brings you to the mythTV recordings screen.

I'll guess I'll try that.  I didn't really want LMCE serving up IP's at the moment because I'm constantly rebooting the box while I'm fiddling with it.  I guess that beats the alternative of running myth-setup each time.  Thanks.
