Feature requests & roadmap / Re: pleas add drivers fore my touchscreen
« on: March 15, 2008, 06:12:41 pm »
The drivers for the Egalax touchscreens, the Planar touchscreens  and the Elo usb touchscreens should be in the system soon with instructions in the WiKi under touchscreen I think. There are indexing issues with the WiKi. The elographics serial touch screen driver is in the system but needs manual adjustment of the xorg.conf file to work and manual tweaking of the settings. There is a cal utility but its for the serious programmer to implement.

Feature requests & roadmap / Re: Advanced Lighting Controls
« on: March 15, 2008, 06:08:16 pm »
Not all lighting modules have control over their dim rates, especially over the network. And the ZWave modules have different features sets and some aren't supported by all modules.

I peeked inside the ZWave command classes and there is no explicit required support for dim rates so it would be vendor specific. I do remember something in the X-10 stuuf that could do it but thats old fuzzy memory.

It would be possible to write a macro that sends repeated changes in level however you then run into the latency and bandwidth issues if the networks.

You may need to enable more sources in the sources.list to get the additional languages available. This can open the system to other packages that might break things however. So you should reset it after adding the missing pieces.

Its says you are using a USB audio device. Ithat was also noted earlier but the only sound module loded was the USB audio module.  The on board audio should be the HDA nvidia. Exactly which motherboard is it? I'm using an M2NPV-VM. I'm also using an M2N-E. The M2N-E uses a realtek audio chipset I think. But your system has found a USB audio device and loaded it. The USB audio device does not have an SPDIF (IEC958) output per the modprobe.

Its acting like your not using the on board audio at all.

If you are up for it do the following:

Would you download this script, as below, run it, and post the link to
pastebin back. It may well provide some useful info about your machine,
soundcard, etc.

http://hg.alsa-project.org/alsa/raw-file/tip/alsa-info.sh

Its requires a little Linux expertise but we can then figure out whats going on in your machine.

At the risk of sounding like Microsoft, going outside of the supported configurations can be difficult to sort out.

All of the settings are database driven and "sometimes" manual edits get over written. Not always.

What I would do in your position would be to do a clean re-install from the DVD. When it gets past the first orbiter rebilt I would go to advanced-computing from the UI and select the web configuration screen. There I would set the static IP of the external interface and turn of DHCP for the external interface and the network stuff should be done. no need to fiddle again.

Its possible that the changes have disconnected the UI from the MD, a mess I have been in before. My fix was to start over. While time consuming you don't need to watch and it will announce when its done.

Actually with so many interlocking settings you may be troubleshooting for a week.

I'm really sorry that someones effort to use the system in a non-standard way lead you down this path. I know that its frustrating when this happens. I have been going in circles for weeks sorting out Alsa with tons of misleading info on the web.

I'm using your exact setup and have back to before 1.1.

Here is how I have it and have recommended to many for the last year:

1) enable DHCP server (so LMCE passes out IP addresses and can host PXE boot)
2) Range for Pluto devices 192.168.80.2 to 192.168.80.129 (the devices that LMCE interacts with. PXE boot devices will be in this range. It needs to be in the same range as the internal IP.))
3) Range for non-pluto devices 192.168.80.130 to 192.168.80.256 (Non LMCE devices like desktop computers)
4) Use a static IP address (with DHCP off on the router there is no other way to get an address)
5) ip 192.168.0.2 (in the same range as the router)
6) subnet mask 255.255.255.0
7) gateway 192.168.0.1 (Router's IP address)
8) dns 192.168.0.1 (DNS server. You can use Opendns here and it may speed things up. Or at the router itself.)
9) internal ip 192.168.80.1
10) subnet mask 255.255.255.0

update and reload the router. If the PXE targets already started to boot they may have IP's in the table outside the range that the system will support so it won't hand out boot images. That may take a bit of snooping to untangle. This is why I don't recommend changing anything that isn't necessary. The Static IP change above should be all that is necessary on a clean DVD install. There are many interlocking scripts to make the system run and when one gets disconnected the machine can jam up tight. Like a very complex Swiss watch.

I hope this helps.

You changed the default settings. The external needs to be in the range that the router supports DHCP off. The internal needs to be  192.168.80.1 and the DHCP needs to be on. The default will work fine except for setting the external IP to talk to the router. If both the internal and external are the same it won't work.

Interesting board. You may need to push Jetway for information on supporting the HDMI audio. That has been an issue in Linux. There is an update for the Openchrome driver that was posted on Via Arena Jan 15. I don't know if anyone has tried it yet.

A one NIC core works fine as long as you are using the default settings that LMCE setup. You will need to set the external address to static and point it at the router. Otherwise strange things could happen. Also you must disable the DHCP in the external router or the PXE will never work.

For video the formats and frame rates are essentially fixed and not changing for a few years or more. 1080p 60 and 1080p24 are the near term limits. I would use an nvidia card that is supported in Linux. And card newer that a 5000 series will work. On board nvidia video is enough actually. The bigger faster video cards make no difference in HD video playback on Linux.

The DVR issue relates to how you watch TV. I have little idea when the programs are broadcast that I watch. Effectively all of my video is video on demand.

Actually the HDHomeRun is essentially a tuner card bonded to a network interface with the best software to drive it. It can also be located at the best place to get the signal, not necessarily where the core is. The one box does everything causes a lot of angst when the interfaces aren't all in the same place to connect to the box.

I don't think an EU version of the HDHomeRun has been released yet.

1) I don't think there is a benefit for this application w/ SLI. Video is handled differently from graphic rendering.
2) Turning off a DVR renders it pretty much useless. It must be on to record TV when you aren't around.
3) I would use an HDHomeRun for TV in markets where it works. Offloading the video from the system seems to help stability a lot and the mfrs. actively support Myth. Analog TV has 12 months to go and then its history. The cable systems will also shut down analog fast so they won't have support issues and also be able to get a fee for the cable box.

The Via processor and chipset require special drivers that don't install themselves automatically. There is a lot of discussion on this on the boards here. And a lot of disappointment. Totallymaxed seems to be the resident expert in Via stuff. I could not find the Jetway board with an HDMI interface on the Jetway site. Can you post a link to the specs etc?

Users / Re: USB-to-serial cable won't work
« on: March 09, 2008, 05:12:13 pm »
First not all usb serial adapters are identical or properly supported in Linux. The Radio Shack one is and the cheap ones ($15) from Fry's are. But that doesn't guarantee that all others will be.

Second, serial ports on TV where they exist are not even remotely standardized. You may need null modem cables and gender changers to get them to work.

Since you had it working before the issue may be something else. Tailing the system log when you plug the adaper in should give you a clue as to it being recognized and as what. It should be  ttyUSBX with X being a number, most likely 0. but something else may be grabbing it.

I know it works on that platform. First either use the AV wizard on startup or go to the media director page in the web admin panel to select SPDIF output. I don't know that there is a different between optical or coax in this case, they both get the same drive signal. The SPDIF output seems to require some changes in the setting for seveal applications. The output is controlled through PCM and IEC958 settings on Alsamixer. The IEC958 is 4 from the right end- you will need to scroll the control point to the right to see it.
