.... and I am in awe of the work that has been done.

Nevertheless, when you are told not to install the DVD of version 7.whatever and install the version based on 8.whatever instead you really are stuck with whatever gets dished out.

If releases are discovered to be a retrograde step you really should withdraw it and justify if only to yourself that the change is justified.

I'd love to help fix things -however, though I've been in software engineering for over 40-years having developed systems for some of the first 8-bit micros I have also worked in Release Engineering for DEC as was but have little experience in the Linux space.

Saying this is RESOLVED is like saying "My car now works because I've bought another one" rather than repairing the tyre puncture.

LMCE is big, very big - Huge. I think quality control is taking second place to getting new features out. Since there are so many components, changes are being made asynchronously without proper testing.

Its not the first time that an ungrade  has resulted in installations getting crippled. The upgrade should have been withdrawn promptly rather than let others suffer.

Thanks for alterting me to the other thread. I looked but didn't recognise it as relating to my problem at the time.

Hi - not sure if I can shed any light.

I've been trying out LMCE for a while have loaded the August 24th version while trying to get video capture working from a Sat STB.

At some point, I was notified Ubuntu updates were available along with some LMCE ones. I happily accepted the offer to upgrade the system.

Everything went down hill after that and I'm now have the dreaded blank screen and the X-pointer.

What I did notice briefly on the core MD was a brief message just before everything went wrong similar to:

"Orbiter with same address as 127.0.0.1 detected & will be closed down".

Though its interesting to see you guys looking at logs to see what is wrong, IMHO it would be best to first determine what has changed.

Hi

Having struggled for ages to get anything to work (except ripping and watching DVDs) I thought I'd install the latest updates - a few from Ubuntu and a couple from you guys.

When the system rebooted and LMCE started up, I noticed a fleeting message saying "Orbiter with same address as 127.0.0.1 detected and will be closed down". True to its promise, all I was left with was a blank screen and a mouse cursor.

Restarting the system restored some sense of normality but on the whole, the upgrade was definately a downgrade!

I think I'll postpone LMCE until the DVD edition comes out when everything should be more stable -- hmm.

Installation issues / BskyB 3000 template

Hi - I was hoping to incorporate the Pace BskyB 3000 into my setup.

Is there a template available.

Yes BSKYB's Sky+ & SkyHD boxes can do this now here in the UK. They buffer a small range of shows to a hidden area on their hard drives...on the basis that if you liked Show 'X' then you might also like Show 'Y' etc.

Really - so how do you access this function??

I had a similar intention to use our Acer Aspire Ones as Media Directors.

The problem I am experiencing so far is with their setup. So far the mousepad doesn't work so I can't select screen resolutions in initial setup.

Has anyone else made progress?

Setting up my Dell D400 worked like a charm.

BTW: am I right to assume I don't need the HDD variety of AAO and that a 512Mb/8Gb would work just fine??

Installation issues / Re: Inst probs re Medion 7134 and symbol version probs
« on: September 05, 2009, 01:11:52 pm »
Hi Andrew ... thanks for the response - Its nice to hear an english voice! I haven't been attempting a direct upgrade. Basically, all I did was downloaded and installed the DVD of 0710 and looked at the  dmegs entries for the saa7134 - what you see is  what I got.

My ISP isn't bad, as most of the files get downloaded pretty quickly - even the biguns. Then, all of a sudden, the download stalls trying to download a relatively small file of some 10kb or so - it seems the GET times out and another attempt is made sometimes 3-400 times. Eventually I reboot and have to start all over from the Kubuntu ISO.

Its like the file is locked on the server so the downloader just keeps trying.

Since downloading was such a trial, I thought I'd take backups through the download/upgrade process so I could save some time but as far as I can see, there are ephemeral variables established early in the download sequence, perhaps in pre-innnstall-from-repro that subsequent steps rely on.

My first attempt was to backup just before post-install.sh then reboot and complete the upgrade process. That failed spectacularly.

Tried installing the new releease probably 5/6 times. Sometimes it takes 12 hours some 480 time to download some didlly-squat 140kb file.

I really have given up on it

I'll try apt-get upgrade and see how far I get.

Looked a DMESG

Basically, Its broke straight out of the box.

Hi

I'm trying to install LinuxMCE 7.10 DVD on my (aging) Medion MT6. The MT6 includes a Medion 7134 card (saa7134 chip) which I'd like to get working for video capture from my Sky+ box.

After a faltering start (I'm new to this) I found the following in DMESG:

I registered the card in MythTV but found that I couldn't get anywhere since MythTV kept claiming all inputs were allocated.

I REALLY need to get the video capture facility working since my dvd recorder unit recently broke so a pointer in the right direction would be appreciated.

Installation issues / Broken network i/f swap logic
« on: August 29, 2009, 08:49:09 pm »
Well, I've done a bit of research and I've found one problem in networkSettings.php

Locate the line that contains: if(isset($_POST['swap'])){

The two lines that follow assume that the zero-th entry in the External and Internal Interfaces Array contain either the string "eth0" or "eth1".

If either string is "wlan0", say, then the FALSE option is taken in the subsequent assignment and the interface designation is set as "eth1". This is a bit unfortunate since it is conceivable that both interfaces could be set to "eth1" in which case subsequent SWAP commands will merrily toggle both designations between "eth0" and "eth1". It might be better if the code did not make rash assumptions.

What it doesn't explain is why my "wlan0" isn't automatically set to "eth1" the first time I used the SWAP i/f option. - hmm.

BTW: I took advice and installed the DVD version LMCE having made sure I had a compliant network and found everything worked like it says on the box.
