Users / ATI Remote Wonder issue and documentation
« on: July 31, 2008, 03:49:07 pm »
Hey all.  I have an ATI Remote Wonder and wanted to document it in the wiki, however I'm not able to get it to work.  I have searched the forum and followed a few old posts and at one point I did get IRW to recognize the remote, just couldn't get the remote to work with the orbiter.

So does anyone happen to have a step-by-step walk through of how to get this remote to work?  It seems that it should be supported and work rather well but I must be missing something.

Thanks,
@gentSmith

Definitely seems like a substantial beast.  I would be interested to see how it does so let us know once you get it up and going, maybe we should have you throw your experience with it out on the wiki as well. :P

Well, I myself do not have any windows shares (XP) but have Linux shares with samba and do not experience the issue.  I realize this is different from your situation but I wanted to reply so you know your post is getting some attention.

Couple of random thoughts.  So when you say you have eliminated the physical layer, do you mean on all systems?  i.e. have you checked the NIC configuration of your core as well?  Also, while we are on the subject of hardware can you list your specific NIC hardware in your core and the Windowz systems?  Maybe someone here has seen similar issues with that hardware and could provide some insight.  What about firewalls, any on the Windowz systems and how about the configuration on the core?  I assume from your post that the Windowz systems are on the internal NIC of the core?  What router are you using?  Any cables with loose wiring or connectors.  ( I know I know you probably already checked this but want to make sure )

Just a few questions to get some ideas going.

Mine locks up wherever I put the red box, even if only for a minute so maybe its a bit different.  Still there definitely appears to be some sort of quirk with the screensaver and some intel cards.

Forgive me if I missed this, but after you installed the Nvidia driver have you tried to run the AVwizard again?
Maybe try this, if you can't get to the orbiter to tell it to reboot and run the AVwizard, go to a command prompt and run the following script.
/usr/pluto/bin/RebootWithAVWizard.sh
Good luck.

I'm a newb so I'm not going to pretend to know how to do this, but I did find this information in the wiki that might help you out.

Update the local database
Go to "Advanced->sqlCVS->Update and check the repositories you want to update. The "Next" button will start the update.

Let us know how it goes. :P

Afkpuz, what exactly did you have to do in the xorg.conf file to resolve the issue?  Would be interested to know for future reference and benefit of all.

Thanks,

Not to mix up this post with a bunch of different hardware but I just wanted to share that I have the same problem with a Dell D610 Laptop with the Intel 915GM/GMS/910GML graphics card.  Setting the screensaver to static also fixed my problem, though admittedly I like the animated screensaver much better so it would be nice to have a fix for this but not sure how.

Nice work everyone.  Also lightsaber, I have had the video issues that you previously described and my issue was that I needed to install the ATI or Nvidia driver.  If you get the grub error fixed but still experience the video problem.   Try the steps listed in this wiki:

Let us know how your setup goes and yes, open source rocks!  Props to everyone for helping out!

I agree this sounds like a driver based X issue to me.  I have had this happen on certain nvidia based graphics cards.  For me what worked was to download the latest and greatest driver from nvidia.com and then reboot.  After this everything worked perfectly.  If nothing else I would say give that a shot and let us know.  Here is a link to the wiki with the instructions for installing the driver in case you don't already know.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

Hey Jeremy, sorry for the late reply, but I found this page on the wiki which reports that the developers have tested this board with success.

I would be interested in hearing how it works for you so let us know how it goes once you get it up and running.

Me too.  I also have Verizon and it would make life even that much more wonderful if I could use my Samsung Alias as an Orbiter.  I know that Verizon blocks the obex push on most of their phones when they can so that may be an issue but perhaps we could come up with something.  Anyone have any luck with a Verizon phone?

IMO people do not have the right to trash or bitch about projects like these that they get for free.  They don't seem to think about all the time it took and does take to get the project where it is now.  All they see is "Why the hell doesn't it do this or that".  They don't think about all the volunteer hours, debugging, troubleshooting, research and documentation.  Now maybe if they themselves were a developer or contributor to the project, then they might have the right to complain a little bit, but I wager that they would be much more cordial and understanding if they did help in the project.

Now I myself have been leaning on the "crutch" if you will, of not being "able" to code or contribute.  Note that I've not had any lack of desire, just fear of a lack of talents.  Thom, you've opened my eyes a bit so I'm going to jump in and see what I can do to help and I thank you for that.  In fact, it is probably just what I need to learn the coding and stuff that I've wanted to for so long.

So let me, an admitted noob, please tell all the LinuxMCE developers and contributors how thankful and appreciative I am for your work.  Man, this stuff is awesome.  I've been reading the wiki and forums everyday to learn more and then go home and tinker with my setup, I just can't get enough.  So thank you for all that you do, and sign me up, I'm in!

Makes perfect sense, sorry for adding to the frustration but on that note, thanks for taking the time to explain.  I'll be sure to review the docs.

Hey Thom,

Thanks for the info.  I didn't mean to suggest an option that would start folks duking it out on the net.  Let me first admit that I'm a noob and have been trying to learn so that I can contribute more than mayhem, not quite there yet.  I don't want to tick anyone off any more, but could you help me understand why it is that it's so important that LinuxMCE be the DHCP server for the whole house?  Is it just because it is a "whole house automation" system?  Don't get mad, I'm not questioning anything, just want to understand and yes if there is a doc I missed feel free to point it out and I'm all over it.

Thanks to all you guys that make this project happen, I Love it and I'm in for life, if ever I can help lemme know. :P
