Installation issues / Pinnacle PCTV Hybrid Pro Duo PCIe and LMCE
« on: December 22, 2007, 05:30:11 pm »
I bought that card yesterday. Simply because it was the only one available within 100km. And i was too unpatient to order a tried card over the net :-). As always.  I have looked around the net and talked to Pinnacle support, and it seems that there are no drivers available for Linux for this model. I have until late next week to return it for a refund. Does anybody know if there will be support for this card in the next version of LMCE? Or in Kubuntu at all? In anything but windows? At all?

Can we see some pics?

Of course. Will do asap. Anyone else who built their own cases out there? It's actually fun to do.

Come to think of it.. At the dawn of time (about 2 weeks ago) when  first found LMCE i ran DHCP on both core and Linksys. Every time i did that, the core got authority over the router, changing the IP's of all computers within the network from 192.168.1.xxx to 192.168.80.xxx. Every time. Does anybody know why this is? Why the core gets the first shot over the router?

I have no idea. It just works. One moment and i will access my router and see if it shows the MD's in the DHCP tables....

Nope. Can't see them there. I wonder why that is.. Anybody knows?

I just seen that newegg is doing 4.99 express shipping right now and think that
now is a good time to build my media director.  Can I please have some suggestions
of known working of everything that I need to build a cheap good working
Media Director.  Thanks!

I built two well working MD's with mATX mainboards. i didn't want to use Via because  i wanted OpenGL/alpha blending menus. So i took the cheapest mATX board with nvidia graphics i could find, and paired it with the cheapest AMD AM2 1.9Ghz CPU i could find, and the cheapest set of 2x1024MB RAM i could find. Took apart a low end PSU. Bought some 6mm plexi glass and brass tubings. Built it all together with as small exterior dimensions as possible. The CPU fan actually sticks out of the case even though i grinded down the heat sink about 15mm. But it looks kind of cool(getit:-). I re-used the big slow PSU fan to cool the PSU + the rest of the case by sucking air out, forcing new air to enter on the sides of the case. The CPU temp are stable at about 56dgr C.  I kept one case clear, and the other i spray painted on the INSIDE of the plexi with heat resistant black engine block color to creat a nice piano finish.  It involves some work, but this setup works excellent. For me. And it is much more potent than Via card MD's.

Im running a Linksys wireless router at fixed IP 192.168.1.1. I set it up with DHCP enabled, and distributing IP numbers between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.120. The core (with a single NIC) is set up with fixed IP 192.168.1.8 internal and 192.168.1.9 external. The DHCP is activated here too, giving all pluto devices IP numbers ranged 192.168.1.121 - 192.168.1.140. The function of supplying IP numbers to non-pluto devicec is disabled. Now, when You add a new MD, it will be given a number within the pluto range. This setup work perfect for me running 3 MD's. All NAS and shared folders on the network is found by The core/MD correctly.

chrisbirkinshaw, Your post is right on the dot. Elitism will bring LinuxMCE down if it's allowed. All people working with any UI aimed at a general public must listen to that public, not their pals within the project. Always ask Your girlfriends mom or a grandparent to play a certain episode of DH and see how they approach the UI. Learn from that. Your personal view as a developer is of NO interest in this. Unless Your plan is to create a system for Yourself and other tech-people. And that is not the case with LinuxMCE. I hope. Face it, the general public is used to sort their multimedia files in a  folder structure. The general public will get irritated and turn elsewhere if they don't understand a new concept. And that would be very sad since LMCE is so promising. I hate geek elitism. It's highly contra productive and probably the sole reason why we are having this discussion. Tech-people should not be allowed to develope UI on their own all.

And... A person posting on this board complaining about not being able to understand the UI has to be allowed to do so. Even if it is a repeat or a re-repeat of another post. As developer of UI You have to appreciate ANY input from the future users of the system, no matter how silly or wrong it might be in Your eyes. Repeats just means the developer is wrong and the general public is right.

I found LinuxMCE a couple of weeks ago, and i love it. I bought a load of hardware and are testing all parts of it. It's great fun! Until now i didn't have a clue about Linux at all, but now i removed Vista and XP on several machines and only run LMCE and Kubuntu. And it works very well for me. I have even built my own thin client using plexiglass, a slaughtered 350W PSU, an  AMD mATX mainboard w. Nvidia 6200 on a risercard. It was cheap. It is very compact and it works excellent! I doubt that i can claim it to be CE-approved, but who cares?

Merry Christmas!
