Users / audio (dlna/upnp) client
« on: September 23, 2013, 07:16:40 pm »
Hello,

I am new to lmce, and I want a audio system in every room. I do not however want a media director in every room, so is it possible to have a upnp/dlna renderer/client in the room and then stream audio to this room?

For instance a google chromecast (if that is supported), or a device like that http://dx.com/p/ipush-multi-media-wi-fi-dlna-miracast-display-receiver-dongle-for-android-white-218502.

Is that generally possible, and what are the things I have to watch out for?

Installation issues / samba password forgotten on reboot
« on: August 26, 2013, 11:21:56 am »
Hello,

I used
Code: [Select]
sudo smbpasswd pluto_USER to set a samba password, as described in the wiki. However I have to do that again after every reboot, any ideas why?

Installation issues / HD not found
« on: August 19, 2013, 06:10:25 pm »
Hello,

I have a problem with my HD.

I have installed liuxmce on a virtual machine, and added a virtio-drive. In the Linuxmce installation I find it under /dev/vdb and can mount it without a problem. The drive already has movies and music on it, so how do I get linuxmce to use it?

Installation issues / working username/pw not accepted for web-admin
« on: July 26, 2013, 04:04:02 pm »
Hi,

I installed LinuxMCE, and afterwards I was able to login to webadmin with the usnerame/password provided during installation.

Now, a few reboots later I am NOT able any more to log in with this username/password. I am able however to login with this username/password via ssh.

Any thoughts?

Users / only one nic - still everything possible
« on: July 15, 2013, 06:13:19 pm »
Hello,

I am installing LinuxMCE on a virtual machine (proxmox, distribution specialized on managing KVM machines), but the host machine only has one NIC card. Also I have a Cable Modem/Router/WIFI-AP that I would like to keep.

Shouldn't it be possible to set the router to an adress, eg 10.0.1.1, with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0

Then I could have the LinuxMCE server with an external IP adress of 10.0.1.2, and an internal IP adress of 10.0.0.1. I could turn off the DHCP on the router/modem/Wlan-ap and turn on the DHCP server on LinuxMCE for everything. This should lead to a setup that behaves exactly like the one with 2 NICs, or am I somehow wrong?

Developers / RFXCOM - how hard to implement
« on: June 10, 2013, 09:38:51 pm »
Hello,

I am new to linuxmce, and I rather like the RFXCOM, unfortunately it is not implemented yet.

How hard would it be to implement it?
I have no experience in Ruby and limited experience in c++ (though some experience in C and Assembler some time ago)

Users / New apartment - retrofitting
« on: May 27, 2013, 09:13:49 pm »
Hello everybody,

I will move into a new apartment in 2 month. I want to have HA, especially lighting and appliance power on/off, media system an phone system.

I know that linuxmce can handle that, but I do not know what to use for the automation.
Since this apartment already exists and I am only retrofitting (and it should not cost too much, poor student here), I thought of using the Tellstick.
How long is the range though? And can you suggest a source for switches and so on?
Is anybody working on the Tellstick Duo (so you can also recieve data)? How much work would that be?

Or would you suggest a completely different approach?

Users / LMCE & security
« on: November 23, 2012, 01:47:36 pm »
Hi,

I have a question regarding LMCE & security.

I should use the LMCE server as a gateway right? so route all traffic to and from the internet over the LMCE server. So the server is open to the internet. And potentially vulnerable when not all security updates are applied.

But now we have LMCE 1004, which is based on Kubuntu 10.04 as a beta, right?

So if I install LMCE1004 (which is only beta), I install Kubunut 10.04, where the support runs out on April 2013! (only the server version hast 5y support)
If I install the current stable LMCE 804, which is Kubuntu 8.04 I have a Kubuntu that is already out of support for over a year!

So how can I use LMCE without having to fear security problems?

Please note that this SHOULD NOT(!) be a rant about the development of LMCE and the timing, just a serious question.

Best regards

Users / LMCE right for me?
« on: November 22, 2012, 09:16:18 pm »
Hi,

I am at the moment researching LMCE and thinking if this is the right joice for me.
Short info about me: I am quite used to linux and have no problem with playing with it a bit, but in the end I want to have a system that works and that I can forget, and not one that crashes every other day.

As far as I understand even if LMCE supports for instance KNX it does not support all devices, right?

I am looking at a home automation / media system that has the following features:

* suitable for already built homes. So either wireless or over the powerline. (i know LMCE has that)
* lighting (i know LMCE has that)
* sensors (temperature, humidity and others)
* possbility to have remote -controlled (by LMCE) switches. So that I can have an appliance that I wire to a switch and can switch it remote.
* Movie server / client (i know LMCE has that)
* data storage on software raid

nice to have:
* video surveillance
* door lock
* if possible cheap ;) (yes I know, it never is)

I would implement that in about half a year.

Best regards
Daniel
