Installation issues / RAID seen as 2 drives on install
« on: November 01, 2008, 05:49:59 pm »
Installing to a new box to be used as my core. It is a Dell with onboard Intel Matrix RAID (versions 0/1/10)

However, when I boot from the install DVD, it sees both disks and asks me which one I want to install to (I have even tried recreating the array, in both RAID0 and RAID1).

Are there some drivers I would need to load first for Kubuntu to recognise the RAID array?

Feature requests & roadmap / Hook into Napster for streaming?
« on: October 29, 2008, 01:20:01 pm »
Has anyone thought about doing this? It's the only thing that LinuxMCE doesn't seem to do, and the one thing that's keeping me thinking that I might go and get a sonos!

Users / Compatible security and heating systems in UK?
« on: October 20, 2008, 11:31:28 am »
I'm about to get a new heating system (including boiler!) installed, and also a new alarm system.

I'm having trouble though finding products that will work with LMCE. The wiki points to the Apex Destiny 6100 for the alarm system, however when I try and find a UK supplier for this, I end up on a US site telling me that the product has been discontinued!? Same kind of situation for the heating control.

Has anyone done this recently in the UK? Also, I'd be grateful for any comments regarding British Gas (or similar) willingness to fit a custom control / thermostat as part of the installation?

I guess as part of this I will also need serial ports - are serial to USB devices suitable (I'm guessing so) - any advice on which are the best for hassle-free install, and if there is any limit to how many LMCE can support simultaneously?

Any thoughts welcome and appreciated!

Installation issues / Get busybox after installing TV card
« on: October 19, 2008, 11:14:33 pm »
My installation was running fine until I added a Nova T500 DVB card (which seemed to be the best bet looking at these forums!).

Now when I boot, it hangs as soon as it displays the Kubuntu logo, then eventually flips to a screen saying that it cannot open port 2 "maybe usb cable is bad?". Then after some time displaying this message repeatedly, it goes to busybox and displays a prompt!

Any ideas?

Installation issues / Hangs during UPnP
« on: October 15, 2008, 12:15:38 am »
My fresh installing is hanging after the line 'Restarting UPnP Media Server fuppesd'

Prior to this: Installed i386 version from DVD. Went fine, then popped DVD out and asked to reboot. Then hit the problem on first bootup.

Any ideas? Do I even need UPnP, can it be disabled I wonder?

(I expect I'll get laughed at for suggesting it might be disabled as thinking about it it's probably quite important here! Am more used to routers and switches in corporate networks!)

Users / My planned core hardware - look ok?
« on: October 14, 2008, 06:22:22 pm »
Dell Inspiron 530

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor (2.4GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 8MB Cache)

Genuine Windows Vista (R) Home Premium (Left this bit in the post for comedy value)  ;D

3GB Memory

640GB Hard Drive (plan to add more though)

10/100 onboard (for Internet)
10/100/1000 PCI (for LMCE network)

Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 (would I be wise to upgrade this, or should this be ok for the core as it will not do much work as a media director in my study?)

Quite an old ATI (I think) voice modem - just on the random chance I can get it to work as an FXO card ;) - comments welcome!

Thanks!

Users / Rako Lighting integration
« on: October 13, 2008, 04:22:03 pm »
Hi

I'm a new user, looking to integrate Rako Lighting. http://www.rakocontrols.com/

Has anyone got any experience on this?

I've found an archived post on these forums which suggests that the user managed to get it integrated via the RS232 module using ruby scripts.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for this - ie where do I get started once I have plugged my RS232 Rako box into a serial port; creating scripts etc?

Users / Some newbie questions before I get started!
« on: October 09, 2008, 07:28:57 pm »
Hello all

I was just about to spend out on Sonos amongst other things, but being a geek decided to see if there was something that would do more, and that I could really get my teeth into.

So here I am - excited!! As there's so much this can do, I'd really appreciate some thoughts / corrections to my assumptions and queries :)

1. Is the phone side of things compatible with SIP and H323, or just one of them?

2. Can I use a standard voice modem to connect to the phone network?

3. (Forgive me if my terminology is incorrect here, I came here after finding plutohome) - can I use any linux compatible base as a 'media director', and if so can anyone recommend a noiseless, slimline device for this purpose - or is there a better way?

4. Does the 'follow the bluetooth signal work with MCE, and if so:
    a. Does it work well?
    b. What happens if two people walk into a room at the same time?  ;D
    c. I've seen on the wiki that you can use the RS232 port on some plasmas etc - presumably this is for turning the telly on? Will this work for most tellys?

5. Is there the ability to
    a. name / choose rooms, and assign music to them (presumably by using a squeeze box by the looks of it?
    b. 'link' rooms as with the sonos to play the same thing in two rooms?

Any other "you'd like this..." or "Watchout for..." comments welcome!

TIA!
