Installation issues / Introducing: web orbiter
« on: June 26, 2007, 10:52:10 am »
Hi people,

From posts on this list, there seems to be a prevailing notion that to get your first MD set up (which requires a working orbiter) you need to install LinuxMCE as a hybrid. This is not entirely true, but not surprising as the better solution isn't exactly widely advertised... so for anyone who haven't heard about this yet:

What you want to use is the web orbiter, which in the interest of clarity was named "generic Proxy Orbiter" and which runs inside the equally-clearly-named "generic web device". In the admin interface of your core, click on "Show Devices Tree" ->  "CORE" -> "Create Child Device". Select "Generic Web Device" from the Device Template menu, then click "Pick device template". Reload the router, then go to http://dcerouter/pluto-admin/weborbiter.php. Log in, select "Generic Web Device" from the Device menu, click "Submit", and you got an orbiter.

Be worn - it's a *very bad* orbiter. It's bad even in Pluto standards. But it works, mostly, at least well enough to get your MD set up.

Users / Keeping folder structure in video lists?
« on: April 09, 2007, 09:10:13 am »
Hi,

I got my movies on my NAS server organized in folders, but the LMCE media browser shows them all in one long list - I guess it's only organizing based on meta tags and not folder structure, which is fine for id3-tagged music, but not really nice for movies...

Before calling this a bug/missing feature, I thought I'd check if there's a way to tell it to use folder structure in the lists and I'm just not seeing it.

TIA, Itai

P.S. This might be a good opportunity to mention another media list annoyance - this one is a "feature" according to Pluto... the media browser doesn't understand compilations, so it creates a folder for every artist in my collection - most of them with a single album and a single song. Unless there's a way to change this behavior, it goes into my "to do yesterday" wishlist.

Users / LMCE source files? Build system?
« on: April 09, 2007, 04:18:15 am »
Hey LMCE guys,

I thought I'd take a look at some source files (although I should know better) so I could work some things out for myself instead of asking a lot of questions... but I can't find any sources.

So - have you got an accessible repository? Source package download? Build system instructions?

TIA, Itai

Users / Ruby code for Generic serial Device
« on: April 08, 2007, 07:29:08 am »
Hi,

Has anyone successfully created a GSD with custom Ruby code? I tried to follow the docs in the wiki but I'm getting nowhere...

From the Edit Ruby codes screen, I click on a command (say "ON"), enter Ruby code and save. Then I click on "ON" again, and my code isn't there...

Also, the examples are really confusing... I can't tell if I can simply enter single liners (like <$"PWON\r"$>) or if I need to define the device class and enter full functions as in the long samples. And nothing there says where the device state is stored or how to get/set it.

TIA, Itai

Users / New howto: Configuring and using network shares
« on: April 08, 2007, 05:19:13 am »
Hi people,

Introducing the new, non-definitive, poorly-tested, badly-thought-out, generally-a-bad-idea-you'd-be-better-off-playing-with-yellow-snow howto on the use of network shares in LinuxMCE.

Based on my very limited experience, gained over the past week, and happily concluded in my core actually being able to access and use my NAS.

Also, based in part on posts by asgard and cckrobinson in the Getting media from windows shares (http://forum.linuxmce.com/index.php?topic=1323.0) thread. Thanks guys.

Run - don't walk - run to the kitchen, get a cup of coffee, then return to read: http://wiki.linuxmce.com/index.php/Howto:_Using_Network_Shares

Itai

P.S. The howto isn't linked from anywhere in the wiki yet... I'm not sure where to place a link to it. There doesn't seem to be an established standard for user contributions...

Hi people,

To begin with, congratulations - and a big Thank You - to Paul Webber and everyone else involved in LinuxMCE. The Pluto project was crying out to be forked, and you guys finally did it.

I'm posting this in the roadmap forum, because rather than talk about any specific issues, I'm concerned with what the LinuxMCE project can do to rescue the Pluto system from the dark place the original developers stuck it in... no more about them, though, because it's really bad form to come to a forked project and rant about the original.

As I think anyone here can see, LinuxMCE at the moment feels like looking at a cockroach through a microscope - it's just one really big bug. And I bet that the same bugs exist in the Pluto codebase - I can't imagine that the LinuxMCE developers put all those bugs in. And where the bugs end, start the missing or badly thought out features that PlutoHome said they have no interest in dealing with.

So, to come to the point while I still have readers left (do I?), I am wondering if the LinuxMCE people intend to focus on work that makes the system available to a wider audience while waiting for core bug fixes to filter through from the Pluto codebase, or do you consider everything that may be wrong in the code you inherited to be something that you need to deal with?

Or, to put it another way - would you say that bug reports would be more effective here or in the Pluto forums (*)?

Thanks for your attention,

Itai

(*) This is actually a trick question... I already know bug reports are totally ineffective on the Pluto forums.

Users / Any solutions for disappearing mythtv frontend?
« on: April 03, 2007, 03:42:05 pm »
Hi,

I seem to have the same problem that several prople already reported, where going into TV on an MD the mythtv main menu shows up for a few seconds, and then the screen goes black (or grey - see below).

I've tried all UI options, with these results:

- UI2 / blending: Screen goes grey
- UI2 / no blending: Screen goes black
- UI1 - The "it will take 10 minutes to update your TV schedule" message comes up, then the screen goes black. Come back 10 minutes later and see - surprise - black screen.

Did anyone find any solutions or explanations for this?

TIA, Itai
