With the 1004/LMCE install having gone so effortlessly ... I'm done trying 810.
This ... THIS is what Linux computing is all about!

 ;D ;D ;D

I too was able to install 810 as distributed.  But when I applied the updates prior to the LMCE install - it's game over.
Looks like I'm off to 1004 as well ... here's hoping it works for me !!!

After restarting the install from the beginning, and going through the AV wizard, the last visible message was something like ... starting device 21 onscreen orbiter ... and then the black screen returned ... again.  Argh / hmm ...

I'd like to get to the point where I have a functional LMCE install.
I've got to the AV wizard and ended up at the dcerouter login twice, and that's where it stops.  startx merely puts me at the KDE desktop with no LMCE.

At what point in the install process have the recent fixes corrected the installation errors?
I'd like to start as late in the process as possible to minimize bandwidth consumption.

Thanks.

Glad to hear the problem is fixed and that users are seeing positive results.

After burning up a *lot* of bandwidth trying and failing to successfully complete the LMCE install, I'm wanting to restart with one of the saved VMware images as late in the process as possible to minimize over-limit charges with my ISP.

I don't want to have to restart at the beginning if I don't have to ...

So, having several system images to re-start from, at what point in the install process does the fix impact:

(from the 810 install page)
sudo su - #This might ask for the password you specified earlier during the install of kubuntu.
apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get install medibuntu-keyring
wget -c http://deb.linuxmce.org/ubuntu/new-installer-latest.tar.gz
tar xvf new-installer-latest.tar.gz
cd new-installer
./pre-install-from-repo.sh
./mce-install.sh
./post-install.sh
reboot

Thanks

That's cool, but what exactly do you mean "it works again"?
At what point in the install process do we start to utilize what's been corrected?  Having had so many problems (using VMware) I have been making copies of each step along the way.

Thanks (in advance).

Hey Paul,

Well, after going through the command tool install of LMCE and once again getting to the "Installing Firefox" screen, I hit cntl-alt-F2 and the hard disk went back to thrashing for a reeeeeally long time.  Once it stopped - I'm still at the black screen?  What now?  Forcing a reboot will probably put me back at the dcerouter login screen and still without an operating LMCE.  ARGH!

I'm really liking the concept of LMCE, and I too realize that a LOT of work has gone into it, but maybe I should put it back on the shelf until a working solution is published like indicated in another of today's post at:
http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php/topic,12083.15.html

Best Regards.

Ok, found a thread with instructions to login and type sudo startx.
I'm back at the desktop ... but where do I go from here?
The start menu isn't working correctly ...

Help!

Ok, so I came back to the system and the LMCE display would not respond, even to cntl-alt-F2.  Forced a reboot and now the system has finished starting the Samba daemons and is now asking for dcerouter login.  So I log in with my user name and password and I end up at a prompt.  Where's Linux MCE???

Help!

Hi Tim,

It may not be needed, but running the update and upgrade still grabbed a *bunch* of files.
Did not install medibuntu before LMCE install.
Screen currently at "installing firefox" ... will carry on tonight.

PaulH, thanks for reply.

OK, finally got the sources.list file modified (file permissions are such a pain) and ran aptitude update and aptitude dist-upgrade.  The 810 install page indicates this, you   suggested apt-get - what's the difference?  All looked ok except for 3 duplicate sources errors.  Is this important?  Reboot went fine.

What's with the medibuntu installation suggested on the 810 install page.  Isn't there one good install procedure!?

I'm installing LMCE through VMware and saving a backup every step of the way this time (I hate doing things over).

Will try the LMCE install after this next backup ...

Thanks.

Kubuntu 8.10 reached end of life a year and a half ago.  I'm having a hard time sorting out which parts of the different installation procedures that I'm supposed to follow to install and then update and/or upgrade Kubuntu so I can install LinuxMCE (that I've been wanting to try for a long time)!  :)

Any chance of publishing an image that's ready to go with all the sources corrected, or, one proven step by step installation procedure (that can even be followed by non-guru types)?

Thanks.
