Installation issues / Re: RAID seen as 2 drives on install
« on: November 03, 2008, 12:22:28 am »
Ah, that would be why then! I wondered if it was maybe not 'proper RAID' as it's only a PC. Thanks for the info Zaerc, will go software RAID after install...

Installation issues / RAID seen as 2 drives on install
« on: November 01, 2008, 05:49:59 pm »
Installing to a new box to be used as my core. It is a Dell with onboard Intel Matrix RAID (versions 0/1/10)

However, when I boot from the install DVD, it sees both disks and asks me which one I want to install to (I have even tried recreating the array, in both RAID0 and RAID1).

Are there some drivers I would need to load first for Kubuntu to recognise the RAID array?

I'm trying to use it daily, although have always a bit of hazardous expectation whether Asterisk will die or not (since I'm using Cisco 7970 this happens quite often)...

Oh, that's a shame, just bought a couple of 7970s so I could use them as orbiters also! Is anyone else experiencing this with 7970s, is there a known problem?

Feature requests & roadmap / Re: Hook into Napster for streaming?
« on: October 30, 2008, 01:32:15 pm »
True, but I'd rather not spend out on a Media Director AND a Sonos Zone Player for ever room :D

That said, I guess I could stream it to any given MD. Not sure how the interaction on the screen would work though, wouldn't be able to see what track I was selecting. Thinking about it, it's proprietry wireless rather than IR anyway ;) Nice idea though! Thinking I might post into 'help wanted' and see if there's any takers if I offer some money for it!

Has anyone thought about doing this? It's the only thing that LinuxMCE doesn't seem to do, and the one thing that's keeping me thinking that I might go and get a sonos!

Installation issues / Re: Get busybox after installing TV card

No joy sadly :( Have even tried reinstalling, but with the TV card in it won't even install, just ends up in busybox again!

Help!

...or KNX (this is the basic KNX-EIB interface code we use on customer projects now http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Bash_dce_knx). So these devices can be added to your system and controlled in various ways or data can be pulled from them, in the case of Thermostats, and displayed on the Climate floorplan (ie current multizone temps in any room where you have a Thermostat). The basic building block mechanisms for extending this into intelligent property wide energy management are there already and with some effort could be extended much further.

Reading this again - KNX sounds interesting. I've read the wiki page you mention, however am struggling to understand how this fits in the wider picture - ie is it an existing hardware standard such as thermostats I can add on to any heating system etc? Could you expand on this please? :)

Indeed, although I love the idea of the all-lmce security solution, the insurance is a factor, and also the fact that if I do get broken into, my lmce server will probably be the first thing to get ripped out and nicked! ;) Also, my 'better half' is talking about a redcare monitored alarm too, which is something I'll need to consider.

WRT the heating control, I was thinking that it would need to interface with the main thermostat, although I guess talking to radiators is just as (if not more) sensible...?? Is Z-Wave fully supported - I ask because I was slightly put off by a comment on another post, although I can't even remember what it was now!

I'm about to get a new heating system (including boiler!) installed, and also a new alarm system.

I'm having trouble though finding products that will work with LMCE. The wiki points to the Apex Destiny 6100 for the alarm system, however when I try and find a UK supplier for this, I end up on a US site telling me that the product has been discontinued!? Same kind of situation for the heating control.

Has anyone done this recently in the UK? Also, I'd be grateful for any comments regarding British Gas (or similar) willingness to fit a custom control / thermostat as part of the installation?

I guess as part of this I will also need serial ports - are serial to USB devices suitable (I'm guessing so) - any advice on which are the best for hassle-free install, and if there is any limit to how many LMCE can support simultaneously?

Any thoughts welcome and appreciated!

Thanks for your comments. The quad core wasn't actually much more expensive than the dual core, so I thought hey why not! ;)

The graphics card had to go though; I don't think it had any onboard ram to speak of, and the setup video on first boot was stuttering. After gaining a slight (but not complete) improvement with an nvidia 7300 I had in a box of junk, I decided to go for broke and stick a 8600GT (512MB) in, which has fixed everything and runs perfectly.

That said, I've now added a Nova T500 TV card (PCI) and it doesn't boot, instead telling me that it can't open port 2 - "maybe my usb cable is bad"! Hmmm...

Installation issues / Get busybox after installing TV card
« on: October 19, 2008, 11:14:33 pm »
My installation was running fine until I added a Nova T500 DVB card (which seemed to be the best bet looking at these forums!).

Now when I boot, it hangs as soon as it displays the Kubuntu logo, then eventually flips to a screen saying that it cannot open port 2 "maybe usb cable is bad?". Then after some time displaying this message repeatedly, it goes to busybox and displays a prompt!

Any ideas?

Just as a note on the bluetooth causing the hang - found this fix

echo "Belkin F8T012 Compatibility Blacklist" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
echo "blacklist pegasus" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

Thanks for this Colin.

Also, now I notice that the wizard has started but isn't playing properly - cannot see 'her', and yet I can see the soft keyboard, and hear bits of what she's saying. The mouse is also moving unevenly. Should I assume that my graphics card is not up to the task?

Hmmm, seem to have solved it by disconnecting the bluetooth adapter (Belkin)... thought this was compatible having seen some other posts... perhaps I'm doing something wrong, or should have left that bit until later?
