Users / HD-5500 Tuner - Trouble Tuning NTSC
« on: January 29, 2011, 03:48:45 pm »
Using HD-5500 Hi Definition Television PCI Card - pchdtv - card tunes Comcast Cable High QAM-256 ok.

Comcast is moving to digital transport only and is giving out Digital Transport Adaptors which tune all the digital channels you are entitled to and outputs a signal NTSC on ch03 or 04.  Thought I could use this with the Linux MCE to get more channels.
Tried installing the Comcast DTA DCI105COM1 which has output in NTSC ch03 or 04.  Am able to get the video in Black and White only and no sound.
Tested the DTA output by plugging into a VCR -- output is fine ch03 color pix w sound -so its not the Comcast box.

Anyone get HD-5500 to tune NTSC signals?

Installation issues / Firewall settings for Samba shares
« on: January 12, 2009, 02:21:50 pm »
Have Linuxmce connected to linksys router which also connects to windows boxes and to the cable modem/world

with linuxmce firewall enabled and port 22 forwarded in router can get to internet from linuxmce, can Putty to linuxmce from windows - cant get samba to see the windows boxes - get mshome and linuxmce shows up thats all

with linuxmce firewall disabled can see all windows boxes ok, share files ok - all nice.

Are there some firewall rules I need to put in to get this to work with the firewall still enabled.

I have read the wiki about preferred 2 nic card, linuxmce as dhcp etc -- understand what I am trying to do is not preferred setup but want to try and get this working to just share files.  Can anyone advise on needed firewall tweaks?

Update later on 12/17/08
Searching this forum finally found the fix:

After getting the system up, to where the mythtv is playing via
digital audio, open the webadmin, go to the media directors page,
and on the media director you are using digital on,
from the drop down box under audio, select stereo not SPDIF
But leave the AC3 box checked.
At the bottom click update, and then do a router reload.
Now my videos and my mythtv play using the digital output.

Developers:  there seem to be some issues here -
After I initially loaded LinuxMCE there was no sound from initial wizard.
opening alsamixer turn up IEC958 volume - got sound out of the initial wizard.  However no sound for TV or Video. All the other tweaks mentioned in this post were needed to get TV and Video sound working. It would be really nice if it had worked out of the box. If anyone wants any further testing on my part to get any more info needed to get this pinned down and a fix scheduled let me know.

Original posting follows:

Sound problems on DVD playback

Am using SPDIF output for sound - works fine for TV but get motorboating sound for DVD playback.

- I must have something wrong with Xine config? Not sure where that is controlled.

Can anyone suggest what I might try?

Audio out - using SPDIF output from mobo to receiver

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Stuff I did to get the sound working for TV:

make sure receiver set to accept optical input

open alsamixer turn up IEC958 volume

MythTV Backend Setup -mythtv-setup.
Set up capture card - pick DVB DTV capture card(v3.x) NOT pcHDTV DTV capture card(w/V4L drivers).
When done see a capture card [DVB:0] listed.

in mythtv frontend
 KDE Desktop>Multimedia>Myth Frontend>Utilities Setup>General
enable
AC3 to SPDIF passthru
DTS to SPDIF passthru

added cx88-dvb and cx88-alsa to /etc/modules file

in /usr/share/alsa/cards/NFORCE.conf
changed line 197 from device 2 to device 1

above gets tv working with sound
dvd plays but no sound -- get motorboating noise - same as had for tv before last change to NFORCE.conf

Installation issues / No Sound Problem - 7.10 SPDIF & HDA NVidia
« on: December 15, 2008, 04:17:23 pm »
Did a clean install of Linuxmce 7.10 from i386 DVD.
- heard no audio during wizard, and could not get any audio out S/PDIF cable.

Update 12/16/08: Chased software configuration problems for a week then finally discovered problem is me -- had a wrong setting on my receiver - it was not listening on the SPDIF port!   LinuxMCE working fine all the time.  I still some problems with DVD sound but will start a new thread for that.

So ignore the rest of the original post:

Has anyone been able to get audio out using S/PDIF optical cable?
In my case from Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe MOBO which has
8-channel High-Definition Audio provided by an ADI 1988B chip.
(additional system details below)

Yes, I did open the alsamixer and unmute the IEC958 controls and cranked
up volume on all controls.

Seems like the wizard failed to setup something needed in the audio configuration.

If anyone has audio working on the S/PDIF maby you can help me with whatever is missing in my config files.

Troubleshooting I have done so far includes using aplay to play a .wav file
for audio testing purposes:
aplay -D hw:0,1 should give me the S/PDIF outpot - nothing heard.
aplay -D hw:0,0 gives audio out on a test speaker I have plugged into the MOBO LFE output.

below are system details and results of:
aplay -l
aplay -L
cat /dev/sndstat   -- seems like sndstat has Analog Devices AD1988B only - no digital device!

I am Linux newbie and need some help to find out whats going on.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Developers: wonder if 8.10 would have this resolved? - or should I wait for beta?

Would like to get audio working on S/PDIF output.

Hello Forum:

Can anyone help with sound problem on newly installed system.  I am using
SPDIF TosLink from PC to Pioneer Receiver - sound works fine for watching TV with MythTV but get no sound when playing DVD or playback of recorded TV.

Suggestions appreciated.

Having problems with sound – in AV Wizard got no sound on step 6, did get sound on Dolby and DTS - later found that in step 6 sound has to be cranked up to 100% to hear it.

following instructions on the wiki got tv working both cable analog and some digital channels:
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/PcHDTV_HD5500

but no sound for TV -
added cx88-dvb and cx88-alsa to /etc/modules file
(not sure if this was needed but saw some advice on this forum calling for it)

In MythTV Front End (KDE Desktop > Multimedia > Myth Frontend)
Utilities Setup > General
set Audio Output Device to ALSA:default
set Passtyhru output Device to ALSA:iec958:{AESO oxo2}
check enable AC3 to SPDIF passthru
check enable DTS to SPDIF passthru

In terminal window open alsamixer
unmute the iec958 device.

The above got sound working for MythTV - posting info here in case it is helpful to others.

However, I still get no sound from DVDs and recorded TV material.
Anyone know what further tweaks are needed to get sound on LinuxMCE Video playback?

Having some issues with audio - its partly working.  Any help in troubleshooting how to get all the audio to route out the S/PDIF(TOS) connector would be appreciated.

1. Some stuff works ok:  Sound works through S/PDIF(TOS) output from LinuxMCE into Home Theater Receiver only for Live TV, DVDs, and Videos in LinuxMCE memory (recorded TV shows and ripped DVDs)
2. Some stuff uses wrong output:  KDE Desktop Ararok player only gives sound through a test speaker I have plugged into line out jack on LinuxMCE Mobo
3. Some stuff dosen't work at all:  Using Orbiter to play Linux MCE Audio results in no sound out.

I wonder if this can be related to an anomoly I noticed in the LinuxMCE setup wizard (the initial one with the green background)?:
Steps of the Wizard for audio:
AV Audio Connector - I select S/PDIF(TOS)
AV Audio Volume - I hear no sound. (seems odd to me that there was no sound)
AV Dolby Test - I hear the music
AV DTS Test - I hear no sound.

To get sound working for TV capture card - had to add cx88-dvb and cx88-alsa to /etc/modules
- after reboot used KDE desktop > MythTV Backend Setup  to set capture card to DVB0 with audio /dev/dsp1

I would like to be able to have all audio route out the S/PDIF connector.
Must be missing some settings or configurations I guess.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Hmmm... well something is certainly not right. On reflection of course you should not need to turn the firewall off to get to your Core from the LAN... you should only need to do that (or open port 22) if your trying to come into your Core's LAN from outside ie from the WAN (from work to your home for example).

Can you describe the setup of your Core's network interfaces and router/broadband connection (explain how each relates to the other in your current setup).

Well Andrew, you have helped me agian - Thank You!  Your comments and putting together the answer to your question got me to go over everything again and I found out what some of my problem is.

Yes, I am trying to connnect to LinuxMCE from a WindowsME both within the LAN in the house

Configuration is:
 - Cable > VOIP box > Comcast Cable box > Linksys WRT54GS Router

Linksys WRT54GS Router:
>LinuxMCE
>(via 802.11G wireless)> Linksys WET54GS5 Bridge > WindowsME
>(via 802.11G wireless)> WindowsXP

As you point out, the Linksys router does not need port forwarding settings for connections within the LAN. -- I took these out.

In the LinuxMCE firewall I had set port 22 for "port fowarding" - that did not work.  With LinuxMCE firewall setting port 22 for "core input" I can Putty and Ping from WindowsME with the Linux Firewall enabled.

However the WindowsME network neighborhood cannot see the LinuxMCE files with the firewall enabled.   Disabeling the LinuxMCE firewall permits the files to appear.

I had thought that I needed port 5900 opened in LinuxMCE for sharing but I guess it must be some other port.  So the remote login question is solved, still need Linux Firewall disabled to do file sharing until I can find solution for this piece of the puzzel.

If anyone knows what port to open up for file sharing that would be helpful.

Bill

To allow external access via ssh from Windows using Putty you also need to open up  port 22 on the LinuxMCE firewall;

Web Admin -> Advanced -> Networks -> Firewall Rules

Now type 22 into the left hand text entry box under 'Source Port' and click 'Add'

Thank you Andrew - that helped me!  I opened up 22 as you suggested but still did not work.  Then clicked disable firewall on same Firewall Rules page and that did the trick.  From windows can ping, putty login, clicking on LinuxMCE in network neighborhood now brings up the linux files etc.

So I must have something wrong somewhere - I was under the impression that it was port 22 that I needed but that did not work. By the way, I had seen port 5900 some in the KDE System Settings > Network & Connectivity >Sharing  - seemed like it was default port so I also forwarded 5900 in router and the Linux Firewall rules.  Only completly disabling firewall got me going.

I am really happy to be able to remotly login now, but I suppose I should sort this out so I don't have to leave the firewall disabled.  Any suggestions on how to find what I have wrong?

Want to use windows box (ME) to log on the LinuxMCE box to do problem resolution, tweaking from my desk.  LinuxMCE can get to windows shares, but windows cant seem to get to LinuxMCE.

Have Linksys router forwarding ports 22, 5900 - LinuxMCE box can see windows boxes, retrive files, can ping the windows boxes from LinuxMCE using IP obtained from router DHCP table.

Have Putty on windows - try to connect to LinuxMCE but get timeout, try to ping LinuxMCE from windows using IP obtained from router DHCP table - no good. Windows network neighborhood shows Linuxmce and Mshome (which has all windows boxes in it) - cliking on Linuxmce gives message that it is inaccessable.

Anyone have suggestion on troubleshooting this?  Remote access into LinuxMCE sure would help with resolving a number of outstanding issues I am having with a fairly new LinuxMCE installation.

Installation issues / Re: Anybody get DVD install to work for 7.10 beta 3?
« on: February 24, 2008, 05:41:48 pm »
lightkeeper-   I highly recommend you try the I386 DVD.  I had a completely different experience than the AMD 64b version-

jimmejames: Thanks for what turned out to be a key suggestion - the I386 actually made it to the wizard.

A how to "How to get started with no GUI"  from dibl was very useful in getting the gui up:  http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3085112.0

First, I Went back to just loading Ubuntu which I found to be more graphics friendly than Kubuntu. Got the graphics working, wrote the xorg.conf file out to a memory stick/flash dirve.

I followed the advice of jimmiejames and gave up on the LinuxMCE Install DVD for AMD64 - 0710 Beta 3 -- it seems to have problems for us - works for some I guess.   Downloaded the LinuxMCE Install DVD for I386 - 0710 Beta 3 and installed from DVD.  Graphics did not work initially but were easy to get going now that I had some practice.

Used CTRL+ALT+F1 to get to terminal mode.  Needed to know that the default login for Linuxmce is Linuxmce, password also Linuxmce. (found this info by googleing around.)

Loaded xorg.conf file from flash drive and issued startx command.

Graphics now working working - had gui and desktop.
Downloaded nvidia drive for my graphics card.

Rebooted and used dibl's "How to get started with no GUI"  to get graphics with latest nvidia driver installed.

Now have a new bunch of issues to sort out -- with LinuxMCE -- but at least I got past the blank screen on install problem.

Thanks to all the posters who helped me out - I learned a lot.

1. The "blue screen" you are getting is almost certainly your monitor using the "blue screen" option that most monitors and almost all TVs have and display when they cannot sync onto the input signal. For analogue TVs this is what you get instead of the static "snow" between channels. For a monitor it is used when it can't sync onto the unmodulated input - so definitely get the KVM out of the equation permanently, or at least until you get past this point. The last thing you want is any other piece of equipment in between that could potentially change the signal.
Yes, agree eliminate KVM - get same behavior with or without KVM. So whatever is going on its not the KVM

2. The fact that you can get a picture briefly indicates that there isn't a fundamental issue - just that the signal being send is right on the edge of the monitor's capabilities - almost certainly a vertical refresh, horizontal retrace interval, or some other part of the geometry timings just on the threshold of what it is capable of.
Sorry if I did not explain clearly - the brief picture was when I was doing the ubuntu and kubuntu installs when switching back and forth with the KVM.  This monitor trys to autosync to whatever it is getting and the 1024x768 60hz it sets itsself to when on the window box does initially produce a picture on the newly installed ubuntu or kbuntu for about 1 sec but then it looses it.  With the ubuntu and kbuntu I am able to CTRL-ALT-F1 and edit the xorg.conf file to get it going.

When I attempt the Linuxmce install there is the initial install screen and then it goes blue.  Switching back and forth with KVM does not produce a brief picture.  Same behavior with KVM removed and going direct.  CTRL-ALT-F1 does nothing.

3. The correct way to change the monitor output and resolution is pressing keys 1-0 NOT SHIFT 1-0. You obviously have it on the right output, so don't bother with 1-5. Just change the resolution using 6-0. IMPORTANT: it takes at least 10 seconds to change and the monitor to resync during which time you may see the text based console login screen briefly. Give it plenty of time to settle down before trying the next resolution.
Yes, I see that now and that there is a sticky "Black screen after installation is finished" by dan evans which gives this procedure.  I have tried 2 then 6 etc. Just 6, all digits 6-0  --- nothing happens.
4. If this doesn't fix it - you should certainly see the monitor flickering at least - try turning off the Blue Screen option on your monitor.

5. You need to try another monitor just to confirm that it is a timing issue for the monitor rather than a driver issue.

The menu of the monitor has no option for turning of the blue screen effect when no usuable signal.  Do not have another monitor.

Yes, it is likely a wrong setting of signal to monitor -- themonitor specs has a list of supported resolutions which includes 640x480 @60,72,75, or 85Hz, 800x600@72,75, or 85Hz, 1024x768@60,70,75, or 85HZ as well as 1280x1024@60Hz, 720x400@70Hz, 720x480@60Hz, 1280x720p@60Hz,1920x1080i@60Hz,1366x768@60Hz.
"Monitor adheres to VESA Plug and Play standard to eliminate complicated and time consuming setup of monitors. This monitor identifies itsself to the computer and automatically sends the PC its Extended Identification Data (EDID) using Display Data Channel (DDC) protocols."

7. If drivers are the problem, the 0710 vanilla you installed seemed to work marginally better, probably because it doesn't have the updated drivers. Try beta 2 instead which also doesn't have the latest drivers - but I stress this is a last resort because beta 3 should work fine and you need to get at least to that anyway with the release version when it arrives. Try the other stuff first.

8. Finally, you at least need to try an get to a console screen you can see if none of the above works. CTRL-ALT-F1/2/3/4/5/6 should all have text-based console screens you can log into, so that you can get and edit your Xorg.conf file - again, this is if the other stuff doesn't work, you should try the UseEDID option.

In the kubuntu install (which works for me) the driver being used is: NVIDIA binary XFree86 4.x/X.Org 'new' driver

As noted above have tried the CTRL-ALT-Fn  (n=1-0) can't get to a terminal screen - just stays blue!

Yes, would like to try other version of software.  Have not been able to find download for: LinuxMCE Install DVD for AMD64 - 0710 Beta 2

I think I will try for the LinuxMCE Install CDs for AMD64 - 0710 Beta 3  however I am having some problems getting this.  Will start new thread regarding that.

In the meantime if anyone has anymore ideas on how to solve the LinuxMCE Install DVD for AMD64 - 0710 Beta 3  gives blue screen problem let me know.
There was one helpful post -- jimmejames was somehow able to fly blind and get the thing to install:

I have a completely different setup than you, lightkeeper, which wouldn't make any difference other than that I have a XFX GeFORCE 8500 GT and am using the AMD64 7.10 dvd beta 3 installation.

I was able to get UI2 (with transparency) working with 0704, but I have had no luck with 0710- as soon as the dvd installation gets past the kubuntu splash screen where I select install, the screen goes black and the crt/lcd goes to sleep.  I was able to get it installed by guessing the keys to press (really pretty easy, just select the hdd to install to and hit enter then I waiting until the dvd was kicked out and I restarted).  I know this worked because when I switched to the onboard video linuxmce started up but with the pci-e 8500, nothing was showing past the initial screens...

Long story short, I think there is an issue with beta3 and the 8500 card.  I've been watching for info for when 0710 will be officially released hoping for a fix, but haven't heard/read any new info for a while.

If I find a solution, I'll post it.  This really just an FYI that you're not alone...

I guess he had an alternate video output from the mobo which let him see something. I don't have any video outputs other than the 8500 card. There is an S-video output on the 8500 card -- maby I will go grab an S-video cable and see what happens.

Thanks to all the posters, and any other ideas for solution appreciated.

Yes, have tried direct with no KVM - same behavior.

Understood that no need to install kubuntu first - did that to demonstrate the ability of the cd/dvd drive, other pc hardware, software and my procedure to burn a useable boot disc.

Able to make boot disc and install kubuntu,  linuxmce - can't install due to loss of graphics.

How to solve?
