ive got 4 drives setup in software raid on a fedora server and read/write times are not noticeably slower.   ive never had any issues streaming dvds over the network or writing over the network (100mbs)  i ussually try and find small harddrives to store the os on..  since they need so little room to acctually hold the os i use the big drives for media storage.  a 20gb drive is more than enough to hold and run the os..  that way i dont have any fear of loosing media if the os bugs up for some reason..  plus you can always backup your config files to your raid for reinstalls..  esspecially with the way linuxmce installs and wipes a whole disk clean.  id spring for a couple of small ide drives to run the os off of then set up the rest of the drives in whatever kind of array youd like to store media only

your. Post inspired me to give it a try too. It works however it takes a good bit of time for it to load my first video and when I went into the second video got hung up in a refresh loop and never played. Try to give it a minute and see if it'll load

best thing to do is go into the kde desktop and install wine (sudo apt-get install wine) which will let you run windows programs on linux. then d/l a dvd ripping program (dvdshrink is good and free but sometimes does have problems ripping some encryption..  dvdfab is one of the best ones and has no trouble and has many features, but dos cost money for a full version) and use that to rip the dvds to an iso file, then simply rename the .iso file to a .dvd file and youre good to go...  you will need to go into the pluto admin page and manual add the attributes though

ok ive looked everywhere i can think

i cannot get the spdif to work.  ive gone through alsamixer and there is no spdif setting to unmute (or ied958)  the options are CD, Mic and then speakers.  when i run aplay -L this i get normal speaker outputs but this is the digital outputs

PnP Audio Device        , USB Audio
7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers
iec958:CARD=default,DEV=0
PnP Audio Device        , USB Audio
    IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)

iec958 - null  how can i fix this?? ive tried using the onboard spdif and even tried hooking up a spdif card to the jumpers with no luck...  ive googled the problem many times and even people with the mn board say theirs works fine.  if i run avwizard and select spdif i get sound through the analog jack.... im almost ready to give up and output each channel to my reciever through minijacks and rca cables (which i would rather not do)   anyone please...
