Just make sure that your peripheral supports virtualization before you buy! I setup my LMCE 1004 as a guest on OpenSUSE 12.1 at first, only to discover my TV card can't be virtualized (virtual pass-thru).

Run:
lspci -vv | grep FLReset

If the flag is postitive FLReset+, its signals will pass through to the guest. If it is negative FLReset- it cannot be used in virtual guests (has to do with safe power manipulation or something). I have a TV card on a DVB-C setup, so I'm running on bare metal instead. But that gave me the opportunity to go headless instead with hardware using less power.

Yeah, I checked the videos last night. The lipsync does NOT have to be "correct", only moving when there IS speaking. Add to that some prerecorded gestures (laugh, smile, whoops aso) and you have an API. Continue the good work!

Great work!
But is it interface-able (like Xface) so we won't be back at the point of origin, viz. pre-recordings. It would be nice to have "it" _read_ a text-file, using Festival or something for voice, and learn it some basic mimicry based on the input.

Second this. I ran the snapshot from August (LMCE-1004-20120809105626326.iso), and the headless install itself took less than 15 minutes, which is GREAT!

However, after the end of the install, I added DisableFirewall = 1 and DisableIPv6Firewall = 1 to /etc/pluto.conf to enable ssh access. This went ok for a reboot, until I ran apt-get update and upgrade. I checked that my settings in /etc/pluto.conf were correct.

I restarted the machine, and additional updates were installed before login prompt, also an Intel video driver. After rebooting on its own, I can no longer ping it nor do I see anything on the monitor. (It uses HDMI though, so it could simply be that.) Currently, I am installing and NOT updating until there is a work-around:P

Is this related to ticket 1439 @ http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php/topic,10992.msg88719.html#msg88719 ?

Having no video is not much of an issue (it's headless), however, I will need network access (as will LMCE itself). Happy New Year, by the way!

You could make it an opt-in feature to avoid any "misunderstandings" with people who'd rather not see it.

I, for one, welcome such a feature! It's nice to feel the warm embrace of the community even on your telly (otherwise such a cold, faceless place).. :D

Unless you're composing music (professionally) or other types of rocket science (statistics/huge data sets), you don't need an RT kernel. In fact, musicians get away without RT kernels these days as well...

You could use identi.ca instead of twitter. It's more free and also has an API. I was thinking of playing around with this in Python (the twitter modules work for identi.ca as well).

Learning Python atm, whilst studying at uni AND working, so don't hold your breath though.

I've used it ALOT for troubleshooting, but that's because I'm more familiar with the GNU/Linux terminal than I am LMCE :)

I agree with Tschak though. No need for a full desktop. Gimme a web browser and a terminal window and I'm happy!
Running terminal in 1080p is just sexy. Neighbours must think I'm all Swordfish up in here:)

It's a AMD Phenom X6 black edition.

This has nothing to do with the CPU (as hari suggested), since it virtualizes OTHER cards well. The card itself must be supported as pass-through enabled by checking for the FLReset+ flag. If it isn't, then it's a driver/KVM software problem.
You should be able to ask the reseller or manufacturer for this info.

What is a virtual net-booted client? Do you mean regular netboot or netboot on a virtual network?

Either way, my initial post is MOOT as I came across some cash just lying there waiting to be used on new hardware:)
Whenever I have time I will setup my Lmce as native.

Hi all!

I recently discovered that my Technisat CableStar HD2 DVB-C PCI tuner, which has some GNU/Linux support, does not offer the required FLReset capability that is needed for libvirt to passthrough the device to a virtual guest (KVM/libvirt on OpenSUSE 12). I am currently in contact with TechniSat to see if they have any firmware updates. In the meantime, I'm looking for other options. Maybe you can help?

If you are using a DVB-C tuner, you can find this information by running:
# sudo lspci -vv
in terminal, locate the right device and check out the DevCap features. A FLReset- is a nogo, and FLReset+ is what I need.

If anyone is using a DVB-C tuner, could you run this check for me, so that I don't have to buy more stuff I can't use:)

I will eventually move LMCE over to a dedicated, more eco-friendly machine, where the card will work natively, but at the time being I want to test it out virtually. I prefer PCI cards, but PCIe and USB cards with Linux support is OK.
