chrysemys, I think you have to take into account that this linuxMCE product seems to be developped by a very small community and that this product is free.
It is also open-source so you can go along with the community to help to switch to the latest version with LTS.
I say that because I understand your comment in parenthesis as a complain (I am not english mother tongue)

HI,
As I wanted to give a look at LinuxMCE seen all the system potential, I could not make it through installation at this specific time due to Ubuntu 8.10 end of life.
Just to try LinuxMCE needs a full installation on a pc or a VM.
Wouldn't it be nice for newbies on LinuxMCE to be able to test it, see what it can do, check the look&feel, without having to delete a whole HD or knowing how VBox works?
And then once the hook is bitten, they can go for the install.
Greater would be to be able to save settings done so with the true install, they don't need to reconfigure the whole thing.
Is the liveCD technically possible?
PS: Proposed warning on the installation and/or background:
"This is a live presentation of LinuxMCE.
Be aware that this is a Beta Test with what it means including that the software is still under developpement.
Note that this version is probably not the newest and that the latest update may have bugs you noticed fixed.
Remember, this is an open-source software. If you are interested in this software any help is wellcome, including constructive feedback, documentation, design, project management, programming participation, source donation."

after multiple tries to get LinuxMCE running, I decided to wait.
(wrong packages, packages not found, dependencies not downloaded, 3 differents LinuxMCE updates downloaded with just a 130 ko/s)

Well, I guess it just not the right time (ubuntu 8.10 end of life) to try LinuxMCE. Developpers make what they can with the time they have dedicated to this project. Thanks to them and Keep on, guys!
As for me, I am going to try the 710, giving "her" 1 shot otherwise, I will truly wait.
LinuxMCE seems to have such big incomming possibilities (home and small business - phone, security, controls for lights and why not secured doors, sensors logs...)
Great job guys and community, let's hope you will be able to get out of Pluto licence pretty soon in order to get a bigger community!
ps: just finished to try 710 on a Virtual Machine (Vbox) with 14GB HD -> not enough free space and a bunch of "cannot find"
