I usually don't chime in on these kinds of threads but I do enjoy reading them for the entertainment value.  But I feel compelled to add my $0.02.

I have built my LMCE network "inside" my Windows network.  I did this for two reasons, I sometimes use my computer for work and I need internet access to do that, and my wife really hates it when things don't "just work".  So, I left my network intact and built the LMCE as a test.  I had a few hurdles to overcome but I got it working.  LMCE is the DHCP for it's internal network.  It is only running one MD.  The only issue I have at this point is that my NAS is connected to my Windows network and not the LMCE internal network so LMCE doesn't see it. Actually, I do access it from the Kubuntu desktop.  I wanted to test the system for stability.  Once I got past the hurdles, of setting it up, it has been pretty stable.  I'm going to let it run for about a month or so and then I will put it is as my router for everything.  I may manually set the IP addresses on my Windows network (using 192.168.80.**) in the range that LMCE would put them anyway so if the LMCE box goes down for some reason, I can easily replace it with a Linksys router and not have to remap shared drives and print servers.  But that would be the only "hack".

So, to Anne, there may be some hurdles to overcome in the installtion process because of the particular hardware you are using. But this is a reliable enough system to run your entire network.  Set up a test system within your existing system and test, test, test.  Once you are convinced that it will do what you want to do, then let it do it's job.  I did it and I'm not a computer professional nor am I a Linux expert.

joshpond,

Are you still having internet connectivity issues with your MD.  This sounds similar to a situation I had that took me days to track down.  If you still need a hand, let me know and I will try and help.

You can also add this to your bag-o-tricks.

Installation issues / Re: Snapshot not working

Did you follow the wiki for the 0810 install?

http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Installing_0810

I only ask because the installation process you posted seems to be missing some steps. Also, it can take a while for this process to complete. Sometimes it seems like it may be stuck, but it's really not.  The installtion time can vary greatly depending on your internet speed.

Let me know if any of this helps.

Thanks...I'll look into those things and see where I land.

You'd be surprised at how much you can learn from reading scripts.  That is how I learned what I know about VBA.

If I don't need to or shouldn't do it, then I won't.  But I have no idea how it is done or what it entails.  This is basically for my own knowledge and understanding of how it is done.  I didn't know that it tasked resources other then the local machine. So I definely understand your concerns.

If this is not information to be shared freely with the masses, I understand that as well.  If you give the kids the keys to your car, chances are they will drive it even if you don't want them to.

Thanks,

Users / Building a snapshot
« on: February 09, 2011, 07:23:29 pm »
Hey all,

I would like to understand how the snapshots get build. I have done some searching (wiki, forum, web) and I can't find any information about building them. The web was less than usefull because the only information that came up about snapshots were camera related.

Is it a complicated process?
Is it a particular piece of software that creates them?
Can they be used as a backup tool and is there any advantage to this?

There are probably other questions that will arise from this conversation but that is all for now.

Thanks,

Odd...

Sounds dismissive to me. Don't get me wrong, I am not involved in the project... I just mean that if it were my work in question... I would take that to mean that I was "doing something fundamentally wrong" without actually having to explain ones area of expertice.

That's awesome.

I wish my dick was that big.

Not dismissive...

So basically, you try your best to make it work by searching the forum/wiki/chatroom.

This is just the best way to make sure that you didn't set something wrong or forgot so install something. It also maybe a well documented issue and there is some work around that has already been found.

If you are still unable to resolve, then create a ticket with what you did and what the result was and hope for the best.

I would hope that the issue can be recreated so that those that know what they are doing can fix it so the next person doesn't have the headache.

To me, this still sounds quite simple. The smiley face just meant that this made me happy.

Thats why others try to reproduce the error to track it down

Whenever you find a bug, open a trac ticket, after checking that such a ticket does not yet exists. And you should fill the information in, that helps people to track down the bug and you

How do you know the difference between a real "bug" and a user or system problem.  In otherwords, how do you know that is actualy error in a script somewhere and not a driver issue or an improper user setting.

Thanks,

What kind of impact would harware like this have on LMCE?

http://www.google.com/tv/

Just a thought...

Sorry, I really didn't mean to go off topic, it was more about wondering if the work that is being done on the Android orbiter could eventually evolve into something like the google tv.

Anyway, I tried to setup my Motorola Droid and it kind of worked.  It seemed to do whatever it felt like.  I know that I was having trouble getting the screen to format correctly.  I decided that I needed to concentrate on getting the rest of my system working the way I want and then come back to this. Once I start trying to make it work again, I will keep a log of what I do and what it's response is.  Maybe that will help you get the bugs out.

Thanks for working on this,

<M>

Users / UI2A size issue...yes size does matter. :-)
« on: January 31, 2011, 01:24:03 pm »
Hello All,

I have a CRT projection TV (Toshiba 16x9 widescreen HDTV) and I am wondering if there is a way to adjust the size of the GUI in UI2A while leaving the overscan/tv Picture alone.  For example, in MythTV, you can adjust the overscan to make sure that the screen is filled and then you can reduce the size of the GUI seperately if you cant quite see all the buttons.  I went through the AV Wizard and I could not get the screen to adjust to fit my TV.  I could make the image smaller and I could move it up/down and left/right.  I understand that this is normal and it's fine.  The issue is this...if I reduce the size of the image so that it fits from the top to the bottom, it is two narrow and it leaves a stripe down each side and is very disturbing to watch.  If adjust the image to fit from side to side, then it is too tall to fit the screen.  The biggest problem with the latter is that I can't see all the buttons on the UI2A.  I like the screen size for watching TV, but it would be cool if I could reduce the size of the UI2A then I could see all the buttons and my TV picture would still look correct.

I could replace the TV with a LCD and the issue would be resolved but that is a year or more away.

Clear as Mud?

Thanks for your help,

<M>

I just downloaded the app from the server onto my Motorola Droid.  It installed just fine.  I will test it when I get home.  I have LMCE snapshot 23661 and it seems that the latest update for this app to the LMCE-Admin was in revision 23481.  So I am assuming that I already have the proper revisions to do this.  If this is not correct, please let me know.

I read through the thread but I did not see a reference to the Motorola Droid.  Has anyone tried it on this phone yet?

Thanks <M>

Have you guys seen this?

http://www.gmote.org/

It seems that is uses a server/client setup to make it work.  The server obviously lives on the computer that the phone is controlling.  There is a linux version of the server.

It is a free app for android phones and it is also open source.  The code lives here --> http://code.google.com/p/gmote

It also seems that it is recently became unsupported.  I don't know why...it was just a quick glance at their forum.

I don't know if this helps but you may be able to incorporate it into LMCE or at least see how they did stuff for ideas.
