problem solved..after another whole day..
used the alsa update script found here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1046137 to upgrade from 1.0.17 to 1.0.19 (tried 1.0.22 but no soundcards were detected)
changed the options from

to install 1.0.19 and then re-ran avwizard and now im getting pcm, dolby 5.1 over the hdmi...whoohoo
i can finally sleep!
