Feature requests & roadmap / Android@Home - something to watch
« on: May 12, 2011, 09:49:26 pm »
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/2011/05/googles-platform-extends-its-reach-with-androidhome.ars

I'm not a developer, just thought I'd bring this to your attention.  I think a Google-backed home automation system has more potential for adoption than any of the existing platforms, so if LinuxMCE could take advantage of it... just something to keep an eye on.

Out of curiosity, will this break existing orbiters?  Will the new version replace the old version or will they be running side by side for the time being?

Feature requests & roadmap / iTunes DJ and AirPlay equivalent
« on: September 02, 2010, 05:01:31 am »
Alright, so while it doesn't really fit in with the way LinuxMCE works now, this IMO would be a very cool thing to have.

iTunes DJ is a feature that allows guests to view the iTunes library of the host, request songs to be added to the playlist, and vote for songs others have requested.

AirPlay allows anyone with a compatible device to start streaming video from their device to an Apple TV by simply pressing a button during playback.

The question is... would there be any feasible way to implement similar features into LinuxMCE?

Installation issues / Re: Black screen on netbooted MD
« on: July 31, 2010, 02:42:57 am »
Tried all the keys... on multiple monitors and a TV (found a component adapter for my graphics card).  I can try again, I suppose... though if I can't get it working it's no big deal as I wasn't planning on using this PC as a permanent MD anyway.  It was more of a test to see if it would work before I go spending money on MDs.  I think I could probably get it running on a system built for LinuxMCE... and I've never actually gotten a netboot to even get this far before, so I'm getting there. XD
On a related note, does anyone know what the ideal parts to build a MD with are at the moment?  So I don't run into too many problems...

What are your requirements? Hidden? Quiet? Cheap? HD? Obviously all of those things are desirable, but what is your preference?
Hmm, well... hidden is not an issue, really, though it has to be an HTPC style... noise isn't my biggest concern either, loud machines don't seem to bother anyone in the family.  It does have to be relatively cheap, and it does have to have an HDMI port.

It's DVI, it's 1, and I mentioned I tried that in my post.  Though I suppose I was a bit unclear about that.

(Also my computer doesn't beep when I do that, which it should... but it's not beeping at all so I think I screwed something up on the hardware side. XD)

Oh, right, I should add that it doesn't work through either DVI or VGA.  I had a TV with a VGA input lying around, so I tested that and it didn't work.  And the card doesn't have component or composite outputs so I can't test those...

Installation issues / Black screen on netbooted MD
« on: July 30, 2010, 01:43:07 am »
Alright, so I'm trying to netboot my desktop PC as a Media Director just to test it out.  I have successfully gotten it to run as a Core in the past, but this time around it gets to the screen where it shows my IP, MAC, etc. and the screen goes black.  I can get it to return to that screen by playing around with the number keys (pressing 2 gives me a "signal not supported" message on my monitor so I figure it's gotten to the setup wizard).  I'm using a DVI monitor.  Athlon 64x2 processor, GeForce 8500GT, 4 GB RAM, don't know the motherboard since I built this thing years ago (though I can try to figure that out if necessary).  So, uhm, if anyone could possibly help, that would be great.

On a related note, does anyone know what the ideal parts to build a MD with are at the moment?  So I don't run into too many problems...

Users / Moxi and MEC MDs?
« on: July 29, 2010, 04:24:59 am »
This is something I haven't heard about at all.  I'm relatively new to LinuxMCE (well, I've been playing around with it for a while, but I never was able to get a mostly working installation up and running until now).  So I was just curious as to what these Moxi and MEC options are that I'm seeing in the New MD page.  I mean, I looked up Moxi, and all I can gather about it is that it's a proprietary Linux-based DVR... so my question is... how is it used by LinuxMCE?

Oh and MEC?  Haven't found anything on that yet.  Forum search and wiki search find nothing, so... yeah.

Users / Re: Headless core without graphical setup on first boot?
« on: July 23, 2010, 06:12:53 am »
Alright, I suppose I'll try the onboard graphics to start with.  I'm actually not using the server for anything else (have a spare that isn't doing anything at the moment) and my previous attempts at virtualizing a core have been entirely unsuccessful, so I really don't want to go down that route.  I mean, I suppose it would be a good idea, but the graphical setup at the beginning just causes so many problems for me.

Moving the server first, though, so I'm not sure when I'll actually get to try it - hopefully over the weekend.

Users / Headless core without graphical setup on first boot?
« on: July 20, 2010, 06:47:31 am »
Just wondering if there's a way to run the Core on a headless server without first requiring graphical setup.  I have a rack-mounted server that I'm not using that I feel would be perfect for the job... but it doesn't have a graphics card and adding one would be a real pain.  Is there any way to go about doing this at this point?

Also, a little note here... I could try using the onboard graphics to start with, but... ehh... didn't work too well last time I tried it.

Old topic, I know, but I'd really like to see this... and if GV call-out were to be implemented, Google Contacts integration would be a must-have feature.  (There's a topic about this here - http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=9115.0)

Feature requests & roadmap / Re: LinuxMCE as a Samba Domain Controller
« on: November 27, 2009, 05:22:54 am »
Well what I had in mind was simply a single sign-on for all machines on the network.  Maybe an Orbiter installed on the desktop there.  Beyond that, things such as access to media folders... it's sort of unnecessary given that you have Media Directors handling things like that already.  It would just defeat the purpose and break things such as the follow me feature.

Feature requests & roadmap / Re: Use Google Contacts
« on: November 27, 2009, 05:08:46 am »
What do you mean make sure it works with google apps?  You mean edits on LinuxMCE should push back to google contacts right?  Or are you referring to something else?

As in... don't ask for an account that ends in @gmail.com.  Google apps users (such as myself) have accounts with custom domains.  That and people who choose not to create Gmail accounts and use their existing addresses instead.

Though edits on LinuxMCE definitely should push back to Google Contacts either way.

You know what?  That's exactly what I've been looking for.  I hope to see this as well, as I'm currently trying to set up a new LinuxMCE system and this feature would be great.

Installation issues / Re: Problems on every installation attempt...
« on: September 05, 2009, 12:53:06 am »
Er, well... I left it on overnight yesterday.  And with the install before that, I left it there for a good 45 minutes to an hour.

EDIT: Alright, it appears I have a working core this time. I don't really know how, but it worked... and I'm not going to question it.  Now I just need to get some Media Directors set up.

Yep, I've got 2 NICs , but the second one's not connected to anything right now.  I honestly just want to get this up and running as a Hybrid Core/MD first.

EDIT: This next install looks very promising, but I'll need help to prevent the "Installnewdevice is running" hang problem.
