Installation issues / Re: garbled viedo in MCE Wizard
« on: August 30, 2008, 04:40:21 am »Thank you so much. Got the Video working great. I would have just used a nvidia card, but i'm unemployed right now and just tinkering around with what i have so i cant really do much more... Also i did search for answers to how to fix the problem, but i forgot there was the wiki. I only searched the forum. Thanks again =-)I have installed linuxMCE i386 in both cd and dvd installs. Both times, under all versions of the UI (tried all 3) when the setup wizard loads the video is all messed up. lots of very light lines in pink, light blue, and yellow.
Your video card is ATI. See: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Display_Drivers
I don't know why everybody misses the fact that earlier nVidia video cards are well supported and the rest require manual intervention... but thank goodness for the Display_Drivers wiki page!QuoteSecond smaller question: What are the pros and cons of installing the 32 bit over the 64 bit versions?
This is still up for debate, and there should be at least two recent threads in the forums discussing this.
I have an AMD64 hybrid core and an AMD64 Media Director that for me work fine, albeit there are a couple minor issues that I can't for sure say are because of the AMD64 version of LMCE.
What I am seeing and reading is that the i386 code will work fine and the AMD64 code may not work so fine but works.
So it's a gamble. I went with the AMD64 release and I'm happy with the results thus far.QuoteThird small question: What is the differences between the DVD and DL DVD installs? Besides the DL disk having more data on it...
I do believe that is the difference. You won't need to download the additional packages from the net during your installation.QuoteHere are my specs.
1GB Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR-2 800Mhz
80Gb IDE Hard drive
I would suggest 2GB of RAM and the 80GB drive will be fine for the installation, but if you're going to use the PVR function you'll need more disk space. I run 2 x 500GB in my core and I have another 500GB in a MD which I haven't had to activate yet.
Thanks for the answers to my secondary questions. If the mirrors page would have just said that the DL DVD has most of the stuff that would normally be downloaded i would have just installed from that from the beginning instead of running a ethernet cable through the house (building the system in the garage, no wifi signal there).
Also I do have 2 gigs of ddr2, but the motherboard only supports 1 stick right now. somethign happened to one of the ports and if any ram is in that port, the system wont boot or even post. Like i said, just working with what i have right now.. gaining knowledge, then going to do the full setup once i have stable income. Also i have 2 500GB HD's in my windows system that i will transfer to my MCE system as soon as i buy 2 1TB drives to replace them ^_^ Right now the 80 is the OS drive just so i have plenty of room to play around with (I have like 3 20GB drives, but MCE didnt like them.. kept telling me they were too little to install on).
Another question (if i get no responses i'll post a new topic for it). How can i get WPA working on MCE? All the wiki pages i have found dont seem to be specific to kubuntu and dont work correctly for me.
Also.. is it possible to get the "shutdown" and "Reboot" buttons back on the power section? if installed from the cd they were there, but from the dvd it just shows "log off"
