Here's something that's puzzling me.  

LMCE automounts the drives right? I noticed it installing the drives once I finished reformatting them, so I don't need to mount via command line do I?  

If that is correct, then why doesn't the RAID configure tool have any drives listed in the drop down menu for me to add to my RAID?

Yeah I figured I could do that a few minutes after I posted.  But I'm still having issues formatting them etc3.  I'm following this guide https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingANewHardDrive, but am having issues at #7.  One of the drives went through fine, the other one gives me an error of "is apparently in us by the system; will not make a filesystem here!"

I have two 250GB sata drives here that I want to format, setup a single partition on them, and use Lmce's raiding feature to use them as media storage on my hybrid.  The problem is I'm new to linux and I don't know how to format these things.  I've checked a few ubuntu forum sites figuring they'd be the place to go, but I only found explanations on how to setup the drives up using the ext3 file system, and I want to have the option of taking these drives out and plugging them into a windows computer...so I'd need NTFS.  I guess I don't need them to be NTFS, but it would be nice considering in a the next month or two I'll be upgrading to two 1TB drives and these will most likely be tossed into an extra windows machine.

Can anyone walk me through how to format these drives or reference me to a walk through? They are /dev/sdb and /dev/sbc logically. Thanks!

I actually got the whole system to work using the workaround from that thread early this week.  It's a pain, but not too bad, and well worth it.

Ok, I got the OS installed on one drive and working as I want it.  Now I enabled the other two drives, the two that I want to raid, but one has a bunch of junk on it.  So I go into the KDE desktop, to to the disk and file system utility, select the drive, and now it's asking me what mount point I want, and I'm not sure what a good choice would be for the LMCE file system.  Annnd...can I just drag/drop media onto the raided drive when I'm finished LMCE will sort it out? Or how exactly does adding media work?

Oh, yeah I was talking about my hybrid.  I just set that up so I've yet to branch out to any MD's.

I appreciate the input Andrew, I've been looking for a guarantee from someone about a less expensive card that works out of the box but hadn't gotten one yet.  Can you confirm that both of these cards will run UI2 w/alpha?  And what about HD content?

But just FYI, you may be interested to know Andrew, that with nVidia's latest release of their new GTX200 series cards they updated the drivers for all OS's.  After running the basic install of the latest nVidia drivers, my 8600gts is working beautifully in UI2 w/alpha!

The only reason I ask about other cards is because I'm actually borrowing the 8600 right now, and instead of buying that card off my friend for one price, I'd rather get a new, less expensive card.  I just wanted to make sure it would do all I intend to have it doing before I purchase anything.

Well I've managed to get everything working with my 8600gts, and now where I know I can get that one working I'm tempted to put my ATI card back in there and see if I can do the same.  Although...tinkering is what got me into trouble the first time...

Like I mentioned in the OP, I already tried that with no avail.  What did end up working for me was an S-video out, I just have MASSIVE clipping/tearing on the edges.  The DVI to VGA didn't work no matter what button I pushed.  I'll be upgrading soon to a DVI to HDMI, and when I do that we'll see if I have any problems.

I've been picking tidbits here and there from different posts, and trying every possible listed fix multiple times and in different orders for the past week or so with no luck.  I've found the "transparency" error a few times, the blank screen while trying to get AVWizard to work (and pressing 1-5 and 6-0 did nothing but produce more beeps); and right now I managed to get the AVWizard to run through with the vesa driver, but once I installed the latest nVidia drivers I loose my video.  I can boot up and see the splash screen but once the orbiter starts to load I loose my video signal.  I assume at that point that the orbiter is operating normally, I just don't have video.

My setup:  I have a hybrid that I'm trying to setup for the first time, using a nVidia 8600gts DVI output.  Right now that output is going from the gpu's DVI to a VGA adapter then to the back of the TV via VGA.  I will be using a DVI to HDMI once I get an adapter/cable, but at this point I want to just see it work before I spend any more money.

Any ideas?

So is it just better to install the OS on one drive, without having the 2 media drives even installed? Then afterwards, power down, install the drives, raid them in BIOS, and boot up?  Will LMCE recognize the BIOS raid automatically as if it was one drive?
