You can only use the web control with the iPhone as of know. That MAY change in future. I'm not sure that's what you're trying to do. I have an iPhone (don't use it with MCE) but would recommend it :)

Users / Re: Westinghouse LCD TV Service Port... USB? a cable for it?
« on: April 14, 2008, 07:03:53 am »
Its for firmware updates and I don't actually think it will do anything else. If you're really curious I'd head over to the AVS forums and ask the Westinghouse owners on the LCD forums. They've probably done extensive testing of some kind and will probably be able to tell you if it can do anything except accept new firmware.

Unless there are 802.11n cards that work with linux you won't have nearly enough bandwidth. Even then I'm not sure how well it would work. I stream some video over wireless (not using LinuxMCE) at home using N and its pretty good, even at 720p - just takes a bit of buffer time - but I'm not sure how much extra data will be going when you have to run the OS as well as stream the video over a wireless connection.

Users / Re: LCD flat panel - 100 Hz - worth while?

Nothing to do with the 100Hz thing, but I'd highly recommend looking at the 47in westhinghouse TX. Thats what I ended up with. Its been wonderful so far, and was quite a bit cheaper than the Aquos at the time I got it anyway.

If you wanna save a few bucks and have a great TV, take a look :)

(sorry for a bit off topic)

I seem to recall somebody getting WatchNow to work with firefox by using a plugin that told the accessed page you were using IE instead...you can also use IETabs for firefox. As of now, the only way to get WatchNow working on a linux machine is to run a VM with Windows in it. Unfortunately, its not the most elegant solution. I'm actually trying to do this with my PS3 at the moment, which is a huge pain, but should be awesome once I get it working :)

There is also the possibility that WatchNow will work once somebody finishes a Silverlight port for linux, which was announced almost a year ago by Mono, but doesn't seem to have gone anywhere  :-\. Here's hoping something gets done soon.

Feature requests & roadmap / Re: Apple TV (ATV) as Media Director
« on: April 04, 2008, 11:50:44 pm »
I haven't personally tried it (still working on my setup) but one of the problems may be that it doesn't support 1080p. That is the one thing stopping me from trying it to be honest. Other than that, I do believe people have used it and it is working for them.

It will really probably depend on how small you want the machine hooked up to your computer to be. I'm looking at having the smallest Media Director I can put together myself, and am considering http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813153077 with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819111304.

This is probably not the cheapest solution however. If you're willing to have a slightly bigger case sitting around your TV, you can get away with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115031 and any cheap motherboard that has nVidia graphics and DVI/HDMI out. I think something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130126 might fit the bill, but honestly you'd have to do a little looking around to make sure that the nVidia 7150 video chipset is working well with the newest release.

:)

The 100Hz LCD's will probably be best suited for you if you A) play lots of video games on them or B) watch lots of fast paced sports. Those are the places you will (maybe) notice a difference. If you don't do either of those, you're probably just as well going with whatever is cheaper. I did a lot of research into these before I bought my TV - i wanted a 100Hz set, but they were just too new/expensive at the time when I made my purchase. Hope that was helpful :)

I'm not a programmer, so I wouldn't even know where to begin, but it is probably possible for somebody to create a nice app for the iPhone using either a) the newly released official SDK or b) the SDK for jailbroken iPhones thats been around for a while. I had my iPhone running one of the jailbroken firmware's for a while and there were a lot of very useful apps. I'm sure it could be done, but it would require somebody with some know-how to take it on.

Users / Re: What does your Linux MCE setup look like?
« on: April 04, 2008, 03:26:38 am »
I think this would be a great idea. It would also help new comers figure out how they would like to do their setups. Its nice to see what others have thats working, and try to model what you need around what you know works. Even just a listing of the hardware used, number of media directors, etc would be helpful :)

I kinda thought that you were using custom ordered equipment, but thought I'd ask anyway. I like the case a lot :)

Glad to hear that GMA950 is being well supported, as it just made my search for a media director setup much easier!

Does anybody know if any of the Jetway Micro ITX motherboards are working with MCE? Has anybody tried them?

Something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813153077

Yes the MM200 works fine at 720p and we hope soon to confirm 1080p too shortly - under UI2 with Overlay

Andrew

Mind if I ask what case and motherboard you use for the MM200?

Thanks for the link, I'll take a look at it. I'm just a bit discouraged that AppleTV doesn't seem to support 1080p.

Interesting.....AppleTV. How easy is it to get working with MCE as a director? And you need to actually install the director software correct? You can't boot it via the network? Also, it doesn't do 1080p does it? Just 1080i or 720p?

And Convergent Home won't ship to me...stupid product liability in the US :P
