Installation issues / Re: Too stupid question for this forum ?
« on: February 19, 2008, 03:14:34 pm »
First of all thank you for your attention, I know what you write is true that no one gets paid for what is done in this forum, as well as other forum where passion rules first, and that not everybody has an answer for me; nevertheless anybody willing to help me could have simply told me to better explain my problems just as you do now ...

Yes you are right, I use the CD install because I also need to synchro the mobile phone, a blackberry, and I found no application suitable to do this on Linux.

And no, I don´t hear any beep because my PC has not speaker ...
I performed another install without changing the driver, neither under Kubuntu nor under the Wizard, now the system works but without any 3d acceleration, the driver I let the system point to is standard and not proprietary, I cannot change this choice.
Is there a way I can give a written command to choose the nVidia proprietary driver and then enable it ?

Again thank you !!!

Yes I did, and as it is written this works while you´re in the Wizard mode, but what happens when you are not and you just try to select the driver Linux says you should use, and then nothing works anymore ???
I tried to hold the shift key while booting and try to reach the wizard but received and error message, "failed to load X"

I finally believe that my problems regard the videoboard as any changes and choices I do under Kubuntu affect the system, here are 3 cases I experienced.
Is there a way for me now to set the system to use the nvidia standard driver and get the image back or should I perform another installation ?
Thank you for helping

1st
When I install Kubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon everything works fine, on the fresh installation I start the first LinuxMCE install, let the PC to use the proprietary nVidia driver when prompt and get the system without graphic once restarted

2nd
Fresh Kubuntu installation, new start for LMCE which now works but at VGA res, once installed it asks me to change to the right driver and I say yes, the system works until when prompts me to the login page, I cannot get through of it.

3rd
Fresh Kubuntu installation, enable nvidia driver, select proprietary driver, installed LinuxMCE and screen goes blank after reboot, number keys have no effect

I quote myself for the reason that I need somebody´s help, I thought that forums like this one were intended to, even if one asks the most stupid question.
Let me remind you that this may be stupid for you but it´s a problem for me, if anybody has a minute to waste and will answer me I will appreciate it.

Installation issues / Failed start X

Please help with with my CD installation ...

Hardware configuration :
ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe
AMD AX2 4000+
RAM Corsair 2 gb dual channel
VB Captiva 7300 GT
TVtuner Terratec HT PCI
2 HD SATA Maxtor
1 DVD NEC

When I install Kubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon everything works fine, on the fresh installation I started the first LinuxMCE install, told the PC to use the proprietary nVidia driver when prompt and got the system without graphic once restarted; as I didn´t know how to fix it I restarted from the beginning ...

Part II
Fresh Kubuntu installation, new start for LMCE which now works but at VGA res, once installed it asks me to change to the right driver and I say yes, the system works until when prompts me to the login page, I cannot get through of it ! I put Id and pass but get prompted again to a fresh login page ...
Now everything is left to my fantasy and I restart the system holding the shift key down in order to restart the wizard (having assumed mine is a videocard problem) but I get to a blu page which says that X cannot be started.

Should I permit my fantasy to  proceed and go to Part III  ???

In Part III I would reinstall kubuntu, update the nVidia driver and enable it, then start a new LMCE install ...

What do you think about it ?
Thanks for advice, ciao

Hallo,
I re-installed Kubuntu and then linuxmce, because as I wrote I could not access to web admin.
My problems have gone worse !
So far Kubuntu 7,10 was installed everything was working fine, videoboard, lan.
After linuxmce (successful) installation I could only see on different and unreadable video settings the MCE launch manager which is unfortunately hanging on while loading the orbiter.
I tried to launch the video res wizard but after rebooting I couldn´t see anything more, even pressing the ALT+# I had no more graphic interface.
If anybody can hekp me letting my system work I would really appreciate it, otherwise I must go back to windows, that would really be a defeat for me !!!
Thank you

I installed the Kubuntu 7.10 gutsy gibbon and then the LinuxMce 7.10 beta 3, both for AMD 64 architecture;
the mb I use is an Asus m2n-sli deluxe, don´t know if relevant.
the only choice I did was about the DHCP server, I chose not to install if I do remember well which the choice was.
Thank you for your courtesy

Hallo again,
I just add some info in the case anybody is willing to advise me ...
I tried to deactivate the lanboard and then activate it again in the mere hope that it would have been then recognized but, as I write here again, had no result.
While starting up I get an error while loading the samba daemon.
Do you think I would better reinstall anything or is there a simple solution for my case ?
Thank you

Installation issues / Network problems after CD installation
« on: February 04, 2008, 09:50:48 am »
Good morning to everybody,
I am totally new to this world and totally unskilled, nevertheless I decided to move from Windows to Linux
and try to set everything up ...
What by now I don´t understand and know how to manage is the fact that the onboard lancards which did correctly work under Kubuntu 7.10 are after the LMCE installation deactivated.
It must be for sure some wrong choices I did while installing but how can I solve it ?
If I just try to activate them I get no result.
Can anyone help me with this ?

Btw, the orbiter start from KDE isn´t successful, I guess it depends on the network problem, am I right ?
Thanks
