Good! I know now how to switch to KDE.

However, no matter what I  try I cannot get MCE to overscan. I added the line
Code: [Select]
Option      "TVOverScan" "1.0"(= maximum overscan, see http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_TV-Out_with_GeForce) to the device section(s) of /etc/X11/xorg.conf. No succes.

ctrl-alt f1 f2 f3 etc
Of course! Could have known this. Ha ha.

easier yet go to kde desktop and run kconsole from the system menu
How do I go to the KDE desktop from MCE? And does MCE switch to CRT then? Strange thing is that I think that during installation I did not choose to start MCE automatically instead of Kubuntu.

Maybe I'll do a reinstall again, but without 3D accelerated (proprietary) drivers. Maybe linuxmce uses vntv then... Pity though. I saw a clip on youtube with the 3D interface. Blows WindowsMCE and that funky Mac thingy completely away.  ;D

For your S/pdif issue just go to alsamixer and unmute iec58 (name may not be exact).
Start some music flip to terminal then set alsamixer
Thanks for the info! How do I switch to a terminal in LinuxMCE? Or can I switch to VGA and Kubuntu in some way?

Well, I've got it (sort of) working now.

I've no s/pdif and no overscan on my TV (i.e. black borders). The s/pdif is probably a settings/alsa problem which I may address at some point in the future. My audio card works just fine in Suse 10.3 w/ s/pdif Dolby Digital coax etc., etc.

But the overscan problem.... I had that too in the beginning w/ Suse 10.3 and Compiz (i.e. xgl). Turns out the tv-out support by Nvidia itself (still) sucks big time (no overscan!). I still have to use the old brilliant freeware 'nvtv' utility to get proper TV out. However, ye'ol nvtv gives a segmentation fault error w/ the latest Nvidia driver. And the old Nvidia driver does not work anymore w/ Suse10.3/Xorg7.2. So on my "other" mediacenter partition (i.e. Suse10.3) I have to reboot and set Suse to use the open source NV driver. Then TV out works perfectly.

So to make a long story short: does Kubuntu/Linux work w/ old Nvidia or the NV driver? And if so, does anybody know if it is possible to set LinuxMCE to use 'nvtv' for TV out? That way LinuxMCE will fill my entire TV screen.

Thanks all :)

Thank you both for the advice and links! I recon that I can use Envy (to install the proper Nvidia driver) with the Kubuntu 7.10 CD (not the DVD) too?

I'll reinstall Kubuntu now.

Maybe it's a video driver problem... MCE asked me if it should install the latest 3D Nvidia driver. I answered "yes". Maybe it didn't install the legacy version of the Nvidia driver....

Maybe I'll reinstall Kubuntu and try to install the 3D driver that I know works. That driver compiles its own kernelmodule for the Nvidia Geforce card. I need the kernel source for that. I hope Kubuntu ships w/ the kernel source/headers.....

What video card are you using.
It's a NVidia GeForce 2MX (, yes I know, very very very old...) that works perfectly w/ the latast Nvidia driver (nvidia calls my card/driver a "legacy" version). TV-out works great w/ s-video.

I found the following error message in /var/log/messages:
Code: [Select]
Jan 18 18:33:00 dcerouter kernel: [  158.332810] RPC: failed to contact local rpcbind server (errno 5).
Jan 18 18:33:00 dcerouter exiting on signal 15

With the s-video cable disconnected no reaction either. Maybe I have to wait a very, very long time for MCE to initialize?

Not sure if you can both those connected  at the same time. (both analog)
Maybe that's the problem. I just tried to boot into MCE agian, but nothing but that blinking cursor again. However, I use the TV-out and my monitor at the same time now as we "speak" (Suse 10.3 and nvtv for TV-out).

I'll reboot again, with the s-video disconnected. Wish me luck..... :)

It may be trying to run the avwizard.

What connector is your TV or Monitor using.  VGA, DVI
If it is DVI press one
For more info check.

Thank you for the superfst reply! :)

I'll reboot to LinuxMCE and press "5" because my TV is connected via S-VHS and my monitor is connected via VGA.

Hi all,

I've just installed Kubuntu 7.10 and LinuxMCE (beta 3 I believe) from the CD's. But when I boot my PC into MCE, nothing happens after the Kubuntu logo disappears. Only a blinking cursor (no harddisk activity etc.). The key combination ctrl + alt + F1 (F2, etc.) does nothing.

I can however reboot w/ ctrl alt delete. Any suggestions? :)
