Users / Re: 720p playback in 0710 beta, hardware not good enough?
« on: January 10, 2008, 12:07:51 am »
I've tried with both updated driver and the default ones and it's the same. Could you post you specc tk? Or link to a thread with it? Only need mobo, CPU and memory.
I'm still wondering what this means tho:

Quote from: nVidia product page
Supports HDMI™ Technology with HDCP compliant with max. resolution 1920 x 1080p*
*Due to the chipset limitation, only MPEG 2 & WMV Offload can support HD format 1920 x 1080p.

Link 1 to asus page.

I don't quite get what this means, anyone got a clue?

Users / 720p playback in 0710 beta, hardware not good enough?
« on: January 09, 2008, 09:21:15 pm »
I've just bought a new pc for use with LMCE and i've been testing it quite alot the past few days.
I've been having some trouble with (i'm a perfectionist :P) 720p playback. It tends to "chop" a bit, not often but a few times every minute and enough to bother me :P
This is when using UI2 with overlay and it's worse with transparency. I haven't tried with UI1 but it's not really an option for me either.
Also i don't find scrolling menus as responsive as i would like and i'm wondering if i should upgrade CPU and/or buy a more powerfull graphic card?

This is my setup:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 BE-2300 (1900 MHz)
Asus M2N-VM HDMI
Intel Pro/1000PT PCIe Server Adapter (not inserted yet, using onboard network card)
OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 CL 3 FlexXLC Edition 2 GB (2 x 1 GB, 800 MHz)
Samsung SpinPoint T166 500 GB SATA

Users / .mkv detection in 0710 beta
« on: January 08, 2008, 03:21:42 pm »
I think i read somewhere that 0710 will support .mkv files, but i can't get it working. Maybe the support isn't added in the beta?

Also, what is the best way to get avi/mpeg/mkv/whatever_media_file from CD to a harddrive?
What i've tried is to cp the files from the CD to /home/public/data/video/someFolder and then running the /usr/pluto/bin/UpdateMedia (correct me if the paths are wrong) and it works for avi and mpeg atleast. However if i run the script, all the wizard (the lady with the accent) videos are added under video as well which is kinda annoying (it was like this for both 0704 and 0710).

All help is appreciated :)

Installation issues / Re: AVWizard setting resolution "correctly"
« on: January 07, 2008, 10:48:59 pm »
The 7050 chipset seems to work better with the default 0710 drivers.

I tried the envy update on 0710 and I am having problems stuck vesa mode right now.

Just installed beta and atm it's working like a charm. I also installed envy after i did a test boot, and envy drivers is working.
But i cannon't set resolution to 1600x1200 (the option isn't in the AVWiz anymore) after i installed the beta version. Doesn't bother me tho, just mentioning it :)

edit: Damn i love the beta! Now the transparency works as well! :D

That card (and Asus's web site hides lots) uses the 7050 chipset. That chipset only works with the newer driver. You need to either update your driver or wait until 710 is ready enough for you. Updating the driver isn't real easy. . .

Yeah, i did upgrade to latest drivers by following tkmedias 123 guide but i don't think it worked the first time because when looking in xorg.conf, the driver was set to nv. I did another reinstall and then it worked like a charm.
But it still can't output 1600x1200 @ 60hz (my pc-monitors preferred resolution). If i set it to 1600x1200 my pc screen tells me it get 1280x 720. So obviously the picture is to big to fit the screen and i have to move the mouse to the sides to "move the picture" to see it all.

Anyway the motherboard works quite well with UI2 with overlay, it doesn't work with transparency (all videos show a black screen). But playing dvds isn't the best with UI2, specially horizontal panning is awful on my plasma (same dvd, same scene with PS3 as a player works fine). I dunno what causing this but i'm gonnna test the mobo quite alot more, and if i can find a duallayer dvd i'll try the beta as well and maybe write a wiki article about the mobo and my experience.

Your motherboard should have a DVI connector not an HDMI connector and it should have the nvidia 6100 chipset. The 6100 chipset doesn't have all of the capabilities of the 6150 and that may be part of the problem. When you start the system into the AV Wizard (shift key down after the first beep) you will then need to push the 1 key on your remote (or the attached keyboard) to shift it to DVI. here will be a chirp before it switches. If you get to the verbal instructions you have passed the AV wizard.

Double check the model number on that MB. It should have an e-sata connector on the back but the illustration shows no HDMI. http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?modelmenu=1&model=1343&l1=3&l2=101&l3=345 The 6100 and 6150 chipsets are officially obsolete so we will all need to learn how to support newer stuff.

My motherboard does have both a HDMI and a DVI connector.

Now i've just reinstalled and it's the same with DVI-> pc-screen. I've tried every resolution and every refreshrate.

What did work tho is DVI->HDMI on my plasma with 720p output, the other resolutions were the same as with my pc-screen but my plasma is only hd-ready and 720p is what i likes the most.

I'm now setting up the system and i'm gonna try some DVDs and some HD-content with UI2 and UI3 and how it works.

Installation issues / AVWizard setting resolution "correctly"
« on: January 06, 2008, 01:23:48 am »
I just bought a new mediapc and after some problems with drivers i finally managed to get to the AVWizard.
I think there's something wierd with my onboard-videocard (Asus M2N-VM HDMI) because the only way i could get into AVWizard was by hitting 3 when the screen goes black (composit input!!). If i tried to change it to DVI/HDMI it worked but when i changed the resolution to greater than 640x480 it would only change the resolution for the wizard but not output the correct resolution. The resolution is greater than the screen so i'd have to move the mouse around to see the whole picutre.

Now i'm wondering if this is a driver problem, LMCE problem, screen problem or if it's the motherboard.

I haven't tried with HDMI yet but i can't that it should make any difference (have to change some jumpers on the mobo to change from DVI to HDMI) but i will try HDMI-> Pioneer plasma.

Atm i'm trying to reinstall LMCE to see if it helps. And btw, i used the envy guide to get the newest drivers.

I did get it to work properly with VGA tho, but that doesn't solve my problem since i'm gonna use the HDMI/DVI output.

I'm grateful for any answers! :)

Hello everyone! This is my first post on this forum even tho i've been hanging around here for half a year.
Just wanted to say i simply love LMCE, atleast the idea since i haven't successfully madea 100% working system yet, but i'm getting there ;)

I did my first try on a Dell lapptop (inspiron 9400) with little succsess, did my 2nd try on a old PC at my parents and i almost made it (only got it to work with DVI, not VGA). So i decided to  order a new PC for the 0710 version and this is what i came up with:

Asus M2N-VM HDMI
Antec Fusion Black 430
AMD Athlon 64 X2 BE-2300
Intel Pro/1000PT PCIe Server Adapter
OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 CL 3 FlexXLC Edition 2 GB (2 x 1 GB)
Samsung SH-S203N/BEBN
Samsung SpinPoint T166 500 GB SATA
+ Watercooling for all parts but the hardrive

I've also ordered the fiire chief and som rs-232 cables and USB-UIRT which i'm gonna test with my Pioneer 428-xd and my norwegian cable/satelite box (RiksTv for you norwegians here).
As you might see, i haven't got a TV-tuner card because i'm using RiksTv (Norwegian DVB-T provider) which also uses MPEG-4 video codecs and it's poorly supported even in windows atm (can only get 3 free channels). If anyone knows if this for some reason works in LMCE, let me know :)

First off i'm interested in thoughts for the system (it's built for hybrid core/md).

Second i'm curious how the mobo (nForce 630a) works, or even if it works at all?

Third is the HDMI. I've been reading around and i haven't found a mobo with HDMI that works with LMCE (correct me if i'm wrong)?
Also there are som limitations on the HDMI output:

Quote from:  nVidia
Supports HDMI™ Technology with HDCP compliant with max. resolution 1920 x 1080p*
*Due to the chipset limitation, only MPEG 2 & WMV Offload can support HD format 1920 x 1080p.

To me this is like a big red warning light saying "return this mobo at once", but i'm not exactly sure what this means for 1080p movies.
Only supported 1080p files are MPEG2 encoded and WMV-files?

I'm picking up the parts tomorrow or saturday and i will let everyone know who it goes.
I'm grateful for any answers!
