Thank you all....I'm beginning to understand and grasp the idea that I can't use the MD part of LinuxMCE as a stand alone function. Bummer in a way, because I refuse to use a windows product for my MD needs. I just might have to invest in some more hardware to resolve my core heat problem (I had my core in a bedroom closet and it heated up the entire bedroom noticeably).

Dale_K , you strongly recommended that I get back to a two NIC configuration....is this the same as using LinuxMCE as intended (setting up a core and then having a separate MD player tied to the core)?

Colinjones, thank you for calming things down. It's a big turn off when folks get nasty. Thom, thank you for realizing your bad and being humble enough to apologize. I don't have a wish list for you but I do have a donation to give. I trust that the community knows enough (that I don't) and I like Techstyle's advice to compile the wish list and start working on the most requested item first and then on down the list.

Hi,

I kinda got a little confused reading your post.

Normally a Core/Hybrid has two (2) NIC's.  

One that connects to the internet (normally eth0) and the other (eth1) connects to a switching hub or to a single MD.

Now depending upon how your network is set up, http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Network_Setup

or, http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Internal_LAN_setup

...if your window machine is on the same network as your Core/Hybrid and they are in the same workgroup...

...don't forget that windows machine default to workgroup, mshome, etc. & LMCEs' workgroup (read /etc/samba/smb.conf) is linuxmce.

There are ways to support multiple workgroups... http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/How_to_setup_Samba_with_two_workgroups%3F

but the easiest depending on how you are setup would be to change windows to workgroup = linuxmce & reboot windows machine.

Sorry for the confusion.

I used to have a dedicated core with 2 NIC cards and a stand alone diskless LAN boot MD machine. With this setup, I was able to see the core and move files from my windows XP machine to the dedicated core machine. * note the dedicated core was the DHCP server in my network at the time. With this setup, I could transfer files from my windows XP machine over to the dedicated core just fine.


Due to unresolved heat problems from the dedicated core always running, I abandoned this idea and built a hybrid machine (core/MD).

My purpose for the Hybrid is to just power it up and use it strictly as an MD. When not in use, I stash it away.

I now have a router and a switch directly "behind" a cable modem in my network.

On the Hybrid machine, I have one wired LAN cable coming from the switch to the hybrid. I have internet connectivity, but I can not see the hybrid from my windows XP machine.

I did try changing my windows XP workgroup name from "home" to linuxmce per pigdog's suggestion with no luck. I've also tried adding the the hybrid machine to the network from my windows XP machine and the hybrid is just not there.

Any further ideas? Do I need to port forward anything from my settings in the admin page?

Hi all,

I've recently changed my setup to a hybrid (core/MD combo). I have one lan cable going to this machine. The MD is booted up. From my windows machine, I'd like to move files over to the hybrid machine, but the hybrid is not visible on the windows network. I've poked around quite a bit looking for solutions, but no luck with any of them.

Can anyone provide a working solution?

After viewing some other posts, Do I need a second LAN connection on this hybrid to be able to route files over to the core part of the hybrid?

When I go to  www.linuxmce.com and try to log in, I get the following error message "Username and password do not match or you do not have an account yet." I'm using the same username and password that I use to log into "forums" (which is still good).

Do I need two different accounts? One for forums and one for the main page?

I've heard that the Acer Aspire Revo Desktop may be the next hardware of choice for a LinuxMCE MD. These are currently not available in the U.S. and I've only seen them at "http://www.electronicmegastore.com/acer-aspire-revo-desktop-pc-atom-230-p-3249.html".

I would like to get one of these for use as an MD ,but not sure if it would work in the U.S. on our power grid. Does anyone know any further details on this?

I have been a using LinuxMCE quite a while and love it. However, I have experienced frustration in obtaining hardware that is compatible or is recommended for use with LinuxMCE. I therefore decided to create a new web site targetting European LinuxMCE and general Linux home users by providing generic domestic computer hardware and LinuxMCE related hardware.
I have decided to create a place that sells items such as Z-Wave kit, USB UIRTs, Xantech IR Emitters, Antec Cases, Basic Barebones systems, IP Cameras etc. I also have access to the entire Dianemo range of LinuxMCE kit (all licenced with Pluto).
I am also looking to increase the range to include the WebDT orbitors, more Z-Wave equipment, fully licenced Media Directors, VoIP hardware, remote controls and more.

I see where Acer has come out with a desktop, the AspireRevo, that is currently available in the U.K. I've heard that this is the next hardware of choice for LinuxMCE users. This product is not yet available in the U.S. Do you have this product available on your website? If so, would the power supply and cord be suitable for the U.S. and how much are you charging?

On a Core boot after the Kubuntu splash screen what normally happens is that you'll see the kinit: No resume image, doing normal boot...

followed by   Orbiter Generation Start and when completed you'll see Orbiter Generation Done (- except probably in your case).

Then X windows starts.

When MCE tries to switch to the X window do a <CTRL/F1) to get the console 1 window (dcerouter login).

Are you stuck at Orbiter Generation Start and nothing afterwards or are you getting any error messages?

Another thing to look at would possibly be your xorg.conf.

My core boots just fine and is up and running. My MD is where I'm stuck when trying to boot up. I get stuck at "activating orbiter"....no error message. I've tried to look into the xorg.conf. and didn't get very far....the literature I was trying to follow seemed confusing. I'd appreciate any help in this area.

Hi,

On initial start up activating orbiter can take 20 minutes.

If you have a blank progress window screen with a green bar stuck about the middle do a <CTRL/ALT>F1 or F8 and then back to <CTRL/ALT> F7.

If your orbiter has taken 30-40 minutes just reboot.

I do not have the green bar stuck syndrome you mentioned. I tried letting the MD try and boot for 30 minutes with no luck and then rebooted. Still no luck. I then let it run for a couple of hours....still in the mode of "activating orbitor".

I'm going from the DVI port on my video card to an HDMI/DVI port on my tv.

Any other ideas?

     OK


Any ideas on how to resolve this one?

I got a little further along.....I installed NVIDIA driver 180.51 and I almost get booted. But at the very
end, in the launch manager, it gets stuck on "activating orbiter".

Any further ideas?

I just rebuilt my core (AMD 64 bit architect) using the Kubuntu 64 bit CD1 & CD2 and the Linuxmce 64 bit CD1 & CD2. When booting up my MD (AMD 32 bit architect) at the point right after it announces itself to the router, I get an error message stating that diskless setup failed.

Can anyone provide a solution?

I'm back in business......I ended up deleting the MD from the web admin page and then re-booting my MD. It loaded everything it needed and works fine.

The optical drive functionality is provided by the Disk Drive DCE device on the MD that the disk is in. You should probably start by using web admin -> devices tree to find those devices and note their device #

Then from a terminal,

tail -f /var/log/pluto/<#>_Disk_Drive.log

Replace the # with the appropriate device number you noted.... watch that log when you are choosing to play a DVD and see if it mentions anything that might help you determine what is wrong. Also, potentially the Orbiter (of the MD you are trying to play the DVD to), and the house-wide MediaPlugin logs might be useful.

I'll give your suggestions a try...what about the MD also not being able to play back a streamed video from the core?
