Installation issues / Re: Fails to start mce-installer
« on: June 04, 2008, 02:34:51 am »
Actually zaerc, who said you couldn't upgrade from 0710B4 to 0710RC2? No I'm not gone, I just don't see how you can call an upgrade an upgrade and then say you have to do away with everything you've built to "upgrade". Then when ask for some assistance from the "developers" you get no response until you flame them.  By the way zaerc, your posts is mostly useless.  They are usually vague and condecending, IMHO.  I will continue on using 0710B4 until one day I decide to blow it away for a better option.

Apparently I am the only person ever to experience this problem, as evidenced by the pitiful lack of even a single comment. Really instills alot of confidence in this project. You know, I think I just leave well enough alone, my system is actually working after all my elbow grease.  Maybe one day this product will install as advertised, then again maybe not.

Installation issues / Fails to start mce-installer

I had decided to go ahead and upgrade from 0710B4 to 0710RC2 but I have run into a snag. I've downloaded the CD ISO's to the desktop, I've installed mce-installer debian package, the "install mce" icon is on the desktop, but when I try to load it I get an error message that says "Failed to run ./mce-installer as root", followed by "Unable to copy users's Xauthorization file".

Has anybody else seen this? I don't see any mention of it in the postings. I tried running the /usr/share/mce-installer/mce-installer.sh but then it errored out when it got to the 2nd CD ISO saying it couldn't cache it.

Now I seem to be stuck not knowing which way to go. I don't want to run a clean install, way too many customizations that I want to keep. Thanks for any input.

Randy -
I upgraded my driver to 169.12 and tried the 1080p resolution again. Results are the same - choppy motion - actually seems worse.  I reset it back to 720p and all is back as before. If you get the choppy motion problem licked I'd like to hear about it.

Thanks-

Dave

To my eyes I don't see much of an image quality difference. I think I am using the 169.07 nvidia driver so I will try the 169.12 version and set the resolution back to 1080p and see if that looks better...maybe tonight.

I have a Vizio 1080p 42" LCD with 1920x1080p native support. I have a Nvidia 6500 graphics card and an Intel DualCore Pentium 1.8 CPU with 2GB RAM in my Hybrid/Core system. I have a HDHomeRun to receive OTR ATSC HD content. I have tried using both the 1080p and 720p settings for LCME and have come to the conclusion that the 720p setting is the better choice. I would notice during the March Madness basketball games that at 1080p the players' movement would be jittery. Switching it to 720p resulted in a more natural, smoother motion.  I can only assume then that my video card or cpu aren't up to the task of displaying 1080p well.  I'm using the "UseEvents" "true" setting in my xorg.conf also and turned on vsync in the nvidia-settings utility. So I guess I'm "stuck" with 720p unless I upgrade my system.

Users / Re: Suggestions for a good remote other then Fiire Cheif
« on: March 30, 2008, 04:41:48 pm »
I have the Gyro remote and I like it but I had to send it back to Gyration because the gyro has failed causing the air mouse function to stop.  My wife accidently dropped it and this probably caused the failure. They are sending me a new one once they receive the old one. Since they are in California and I'm in Florida the shipping time is going to take a week each way.

Quick question pertaining to the wiki instructions for it. Where it says:

>"Now after creating the file, we need to make sure it is loaded when LMCE starts up. To do this add the >following as root to /usr/pluto/bin/lmce_launch_manager.sh "

>sudo vi /usr/pluto/bin/lmce_launch_manager.sh

Is it the shell script on the Core I modify or the script on the MD where the remote is used?

Well this stuff certainly takes the takes when it comes to weirdness. Somehow my master bedroom MD was sitting at the AVsetup window waiting for me to set it up.  How it got here I have no idea, since I didn't request it. So I went ahead and ran it.  Well guess what?   Now the CORE DHCP server is giving out IP addresses again! My HDHomerun works again and as an aside my Mythtv has quit hanging up after 10 seconds.  Can anybody familiar with how DHCP works on the CORE explain this?

8 hours of investigation to get to this resolution...if only I had noticed the master bedroom MD wasn't running.

I have the same problem. It just started this week around Tuesday. I was out of town when it started. This is extremely annoying. My wife is really annoyed with me, wants to get rid of this and go back to Dish network PVR.  Damn!

Here's the link to the procedure to compile the Intel hda sound module: http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Module-hda-intel

Click on the "downloads" to get the 1) alsa-driver 1.0.16  2) alsa-lib 1.0.16 3) alsa-utils 1.0.16.

Follow the directions to "make install" the modules.  I didn't have to setup modprobe and kmod support. I just stopped after running "alsamixer" and it works perfectly afte that.

Well in the end just rebuilding the system was what I did. Actually, it didn't take as long as before because I saved all the documentation I need to get it up and running - like the drivers for my Intel  soundcard. For some reason the ALSA drivers aren't  part of the distribution and I have to "make install" them into the kernel.  That took days to figure out the 1st time, but now it's a 15 minute fix.

Anyway a long story short, after rebuilding from scratch I was able to add my MD's again.  I think the moral of the story is be very careful when deleting MD's from Webadmin - which makes me wonder how do you delete an unwanted MD without compromising the system?

Thanks for your suggestions.

Users / Re: DVD iso playback?
« on: March 21, 2008, 05:42:18 pm »
Problem solved for me.  All I needed to do is use mkisofs with the dvd-video-dvd switch (not sure of exact syntax since I'm not at home). Do a mkisofs --help to see all the available switches.  With this switch it recognized the VIDEO_TS directory structure.  Playback of dvd very smooth.  Also using DVDshrink I was able to remove spanish and french audio.

I suspect that means Idle.  Even when a multi-tasking OS is idle it has to run a process, basically a null process.
"us" would be user processes , "sy" would be system processes.

I'm having a problem ripping a particular dvd via LMCE (Pirates Carribean Dead Mans Chest). Presumibly this is due to the dummy sectors which cause ripping software to report an I/O error.  It gets about 10% into the rip and fails. As a work-around I ripped it on my Vista PC using Ripit4me -> DVDecryptor -> DVD Shrink (just to reduce the size). This created the normal AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders which I then copied over to the CORE.  However, LMCE never saw it under Videos.  So then I went to Files & Media Sync in LMCE admin and manually added the individual VOBs, IFOs, etc into the media database, using LMCE DVD as the filetype. This did allow me to see the files under Videos but they won't play.  I tried playing them with Xine from the KDE desktop but I get an error saying the format is not supported or CSSDVD isn't installed. Before someone says make sure that CSSDVD is installed, it is. I can play other DVDs fine that were ripped without any problems on this MD and play DVD disks.

So I tried some of the suggestions in this thread and it still won't work. I made an ISO of the VIDEO_TS directory using mkisofs -o name_of_file.dvd directory_of_dvd/ and this didn't work either. It makes the iso file perfectly but it says that the media type is unrecognized or CSSDVD isn't installed when chosen in LMCE under videos.    I can play the ripped DVD files fine on the Vista computer so I know the files are ok.

I thought that LMCE was supposed to see the VIDEO_TS directory and recognize that the files under it were part of the DVD and show it as one file, but this never worked.

Thanks for any suggestions.  I am running LMCE Beta 4 by the way.

I rebuilt my CORE from scratch and this problem disappeared with new install.  The only differences was I chose to not save any settings (DL DVD upgrade) and I made sure DHCP was enabled on my external router before starting.  I have found that the install process needs DHCP to properly set the IP address on the external Interface card, and then will have internet access to download updates during the installation.
