I guess they should be identified by their filesystem-UUID instead of the (temporary) device they are assigned to.

Yes i agree thats definitely the way to go. We also need to manage memory card insertion and the auto movement of files from/too all of these devices - none of this can be effectively managed by the user from the Orbiter currently which is where it needs to be accessed from.

When I insert a storage device I want the system to help manage the various activities i might want to carry out ;

- Is this a semi/permanent storage device ie USB hard drive that I want to leave attached and have UpdateMedia scan
- Is this a storage device that I only want to copy media from or too the Core
- Is this an MP3/Video playback device... then manage the copy to/from process appropriate to the media required
- Provide safe removal of storage devices

In my opinion this is a very high priority feature that we need to add

All the best

Andrew
Agreed, this is a "make or break" feature for me in LinuxMCE.
Hope it gets addressed now that 710 is released..
I travel alot and have multiple USB Drives upto 250gb each.. lots of media on each.. when i return home i like to be able to plugin my drive to watch new media, remove it later.. not mess-up existing collection..
plug-in my mp3 player.. or if a friend comes over with a media on a USB stick that i would like to watch..
For now, to avoid re-scaning collections, i just ignore the usb device and use Kubuntu to browse and launch media. Copy/update my existing core media manually from USB drive...
or connect USB Media to a laptop and SAMBA to core storage and update files...

Users / Failed to apt-get update
February 23, 2008, 03:03:37 AM
I keep getting this at the end of an apt-get update command

Failed to fetch http://deb.linuxmce.com/ubuntu/dists/20dev_ubuntu/main/binary-amd64/Packages.gz 302 Found
Failed to fetch http://linuxmce.com/ubuntu/./Packages.gz 302 Found
Reading package lists... Done
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

here is my /etc/apt/sources.list

deb file:/usr/pluto/deb-cache/ ./
deb http://gulus.USherbrooke.ca/ubuntu/ gutsy  main restricted multiverse universe
deb http://gulus.USherbrooke.ca/ubuntu/ gutsy-security  main restricted multiverse universe
deb http://gulus.USherbrooke.ca/ubuntu/ gutsy-updates  main restricted multiverse universe
deb http://linuxmce.com/ubuntu/ ./
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy  main universe multiverse
deb http://deb.linuxmce.com/ubuntu/ 20dev_ubuntu  main

Is there something wrong with my install?

I want to install some packages. (carefully).. i read in the forums here that i just have to fix my sources.list and apt-get update. what am i doing wrong? my sources.list files looks okay.. but apt-get update shows failed errors and i still can't install any packages.

Users / no Audio while playing movie
February 11, 2008, 10:35:09 AM

Why is it that if you start xine-player (playing a movie), you won't be able to get sound anywhere else in KDE.

But if you start a sound source first in KDE (lets say a youtube video) then switch back to LinuxMCE and play a movie. Both sounds from Youtube and Xine-Player will come through?

I checked the Xine-Player device in my core/hybrid (web-admin), there is a field for ALSA-OUTPUT.

Is it supposed to work this way? or do I have something setup-wrong.
The only way I can get a other sounds working while a movie playing is by starting that other sound source first, before playing the movie.

I have on board audio (RealtekĀ® ALC861/883/888)
No driver shows up in the Audio Tab of the LInux MCE Launch Manager.

00:05.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP61 High Definition Audio (rev a2)

Any thought on this?

Users / Re: LCD working on Silverstone case

Chamo..
have you had any luck with this since your post ? did you get your case yet ?

I have an Antec Veris Fusion  HTPC case which uses the same IMON/Soundgraph VFD/LCD with an IR reciever that i'd like to get working with my LinuxMCE box.

>lsusb | grep iMON
>Bus 001 Device 006: ID 15c2:ffdc SoundGraph Inc. iMON PAD Remote Controller

I am afraid of tampering with my box, as i already broke it once by installing apps or somthing... it is running perfect now, i would just like to get the VFD/LCD showing something and the Volume Knob working..

Found this..
http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/IMON_PAD
but i don't actually have the remote... just need the VFD/LCD working and the IR Reliever, it seems like LIRC actual includes iMON since Version 0.7.1

Installation issues / Re: Orbiter failing
December 29, 2007, 02:16:18 PM
Thanks Kuffi..
you just saved me a re-install.. i had the same error and wasn't able to start media station...

After reading your post, i had realized i also disabled "Asterix" and "Text to speech".. so I re-enabled them in web-admin and my linux-mce is back..
