How A/V Wizard Starts
When A/V Wizard starts it always outputs 640x480 on the VGA connector. So, if you are not using the VGA connector, you will likely see a blank, black screen when A/V Wizard starts, even if you previously saw the Kubuntu boot splash. You will know that the A/V Wizard is running because you hear a series of beeps. When you hear those beeps, if you have video, proceed to complete the A/V Wizard.

it would help I suppose if my case had a speaker so I could hear the beeps!

Apparently the black screen I've been complaining about is AVWizard running with output on the VGA.  All I had to do was hit one of the number keys (8=720p) and the I'm off.

I assume it is black when x starts, but you can see the post screen as the pc boots.

Yes, that's right.  I can see the post and all the text screens, but when x starts it goes black.

did you try running the avwizard after you rebooted.

I'm confused, can I run avwizard from a command line?  If so should I boot into recovery mode and run it there?

other stuff I've tried:

copied xorg.conf from the mythbuntu installation to try to learn something from that.  There are certainly some differences. 

in recovery mode I've copied the ubuntu xorg.conf to use in this install (unchanged) then startx and it works fine.  Then I reboot into standard (non-recovery) mode and I get the black screen; hit ESC to get out of what I assume is avwizard and it brings me back to an X login screen with tiny unreadable fonts.  WTF???

I ran envy on my mythbuntu install and updated the driver from .19 to .23.  Everything seemed to work fine, no errors or problems.  No discernable differences with the new driver.

Thanks for helping me with this.  Hopefully in the end others will find this useful too.

2) Make sure that all the dependencies were installed by typing:

sudo apt-get install -f

Wonderful Tool!!  Envy runs!  I selected option 1) install nvidia driver it removed prior drivers and (re)installed .23.

But when I reboot the screen comes up dead black.

I have this system connected to a Sharp LC-32D43U 32" 720p using HDMI. Native resolution is 1368x768.  It displays ubuntu at 1280x768 with some moderate but unacceptable overscan using the .19 driver.

I have ordered a VGA cable, but it is not here yet.

I have looked in xorg.conf but cannot see anything meaningful.  I will post this, then get on the other computer and post the xorg.conf shortly.

Hey, just one question,do you run envy before or after installing LMCE?  I tried after, but it no worked.  Now I'm going to re-install Kubuntu, then envy, then LMCE...  hope 5th time is a charm...

What did not work
Did envy install
if not did you follow instructions to fix dependcies.

A) How do I Install the package?

1) Download and install the deb package:

double click on the deb package in Ubuntu (or Xubuntu) OR open Terminal or Konsole and type:

cd path_to_envy's_deb_package

sudo dpkg -i envy*.deb

2) Make sure that all the dependencies were installed by typing:

sudo apt-get install -f

3) Launch Envy's GUI (inside a Desktop Environment such as GNOME,KDE, etc.) by selecting it in the "Applications/System Tools" menu

OR if you need to use Envy's textual interface you will have to type:

sudo envy -t

After LMCE installed I could no longer find a package manager on the desktop, so I
1) right clicked the envy package on the desktop and selected install package2) It told me there were dependencies and suggested I use aptitude at the command line.  It flagged dependencies and I thought I installed them all.  Then tried to execute envy -t but got error messages, then gave up.

Or... you could do it properly by hand: http://wiki.linuxmce.org/index.php/Display_Drivers. And I vaguely seem to remember reports that the .19 version was broken, so you might like to try the latest one instead.

and followed all the default prompts through completion, including having the nvidia-installer alter my Xorg.conf

came up using vesa driver but the nvidia tool said the .23 driver was installed, so cntl+alt+bksp and the screen went black.  After rebooting it comes up to the login prompt, looks like it tries to start X, fails, then tries again, repeating this cycle in an infinite loop. ... I will describe my experience with envy next in a different post.

You've tried what exactly?

1) tried to install the proprietary driver from kubuntu desktop tool
2) tried to install the prop. driver from nvidia command line updater
   http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_amd64_100.14.19.html

in either case I end up at a black screen with a blinking cursor when rebooting.

I haven't heard of envy.

try looking for display drivers on the wiki.

i would recommend using the gpu drivers if your card is pcix.

Hi Rafik, thanks for your suggestion.  Yes, I've tried that, but it doesn't work.  I think I will just have to wait for a new nvidia driver or LMCE on 7.10 before I can get LMCE going.  In the meantime mythbuntu is working somewhat better than LMCE/vesa.

So far have been unable to get past the video driver on this mobo/chipset combo.

The same machine running Ubuntu 7.10 has the 100.14.19 working, but under 7.04 no luck.

I tried installing the driver from LMCE, the package manager and also at the command line with the download from nvidia.  (The last method required I install libc so it could make some hooks into the kernel.)

It also seems some earlier installs bypassed the step requiring a proprietary nvidia driver update...

It seems I cannot run X with this new driver.  The screen comes up black with a blinking cursor.  keystrokes result in characters on the screen.

next attempt will be installing using the vesa driver... or will that not work?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
