Installation issues / Re: Black screen after Kubuntu loader
« on: December 27, 2007, 05:21:40 pm »
I traded the GeForce 4 for a 7600GS, deleted the MD from the core (admin screens) and set it up all over again.  This time everything is happy.

I get the same problem and pressing escape also works during the initial setup of the MD.  However, later when I reboot the MD, all I get is a screen continually alternating between blank and the last run command which is the time and "Helper Script End."

If I hit any keys I end up with a login prompt which I could use to attempt to troubleshoot things if I knew what the default login and password were.

Here's another way to accomplish this, without partition magic.  Use a linux based live cd and delete the partitions that exist on the drive you wish to remove LinuxMCE from.  I've used the GParted LiveCD for this (http://gparted-livecd.tuxfamily.org/) but there are others that will also do the same thing.  I think you could even use an ubuntu or kubuntu live cd and choose the manually edit partitions option and then delete things.  (Not sure about this, as it might only commit the partition changes when you continue installing...)

The behavior I'm seeing is that although I just hit 1+2 on the wiimote to have it connect, the ir doesn't seem to be working.  I swear it was working before...  Did I confuse manually starting it with the boot connect?  I think I might have.

It's been some time, but I don't think they were.

I have a couple wiimotes and apparently I switched them so I've just updated the cron job with the address of the one I'm using and I'm checking to see if it's still working.

I know I made some changes to the Xorg.conf for the wiimote.  I don't think I made any others.

I can look up cron settings when I get home.

Yes I did.  I set up the cron settings outlined above and used the command line above for running the ir version in daemon mode (launched at boot).

If you'd like me to look up any of the specific settings I will.

Hi, just thought I'd let everyone know that following the steps in this thread worked nicely for me to get the wiimote functioning and recognized easily on reboot.  Thanks for all the info.

I have to agree that using it isn't as nice as it could be.  Scrolling is nearly impossible.  Also, I seemed to burn through batteries within about 24 hours a set.  Like it keeps the connection live all the time.  I picked up a rechargeable battery pack and charger combo so that shouldn't be so bad now.

Keep up the good work.  If MCE would just included the ability to use the wiimote it would be a very nice "selling" feature.  Of course the average end-user might be at a loss about the whole sensor bar thing too.

I thought the answer might lie in standard linux network files and a quick search turned up: /etc/network/interfaces

I had something that looked like this:

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
...settings...

I removed the first 2 lines and the system is now booting and starting normally.  Off to see if I can get the dhcp to be happy.

Installation issues / Re: Bluetooth Adapters?

The Belkin dongle I tried seemed to be properly recognized by the core.  (I've used it with Ubuntu Feisty as well.)

It appears to be a slightly different model - F8T013xx1.

Users / RESOLVED - I Broke my Network
« on: October 15, 2007, 02:51:06 am »
You can skip this next paragraph if you just want to see my question, but hopefully the info helps...

During install of the core I had 2 network cards but I couldn't get the machine to ever work correctly as the firewall (between cable modem and router).  I could only get internet access when using the router. It didn't matter which nic was plugged in to the modem, and I tried adjusting things in the Advanced/Network settings admin screen.  I also reset things with the update button.  In any case, the machine works fine to connect to the internet when it's plugged in to the router.  I thought it might be easier to use the router as the firewall and gateway and turn off the router dhcp and turn on the core dhcp.  (The router is also my only switch at the internet access point and I have a couple machines in that room, if I'd had an extra switch I might have tried [modem->router->core->switch].  Instead, I removed the 2nd nic in the core and tried to get it working as just the dhcp server.  When this still didn't work, I suspected the info in the Admin configuration that still showed 2 network interfaces as potentially part of the problem.  Then I tried doing what it says to do on this page as far as configuration of the network devices goes: http://wiki.linuxmce.com/index.php/Known_Issues.  Even though I was careful when I edited the setting, I wasn't so careful when I read it...  I missed the :0 after the eth0.  Now I have a core that doesn't start.  It fails on some samba stuff during boot (no big deal, eventually continues) and then when the Linux MCE Launch Manager starts it appears to hang at 0%.  The program appears to be trying to start the core, but never progresses.  The last line is "Starting process /usr/pluto/bin/StartCoreServices.sh."

Ok, so here's where I could use some help.  I'm pretty sure I can boot in a recovery mode or even off of a live cd and mount the drive if necessary, but I don't know where the network configuration settings might be stored.  Does anyone know which file I should attempt to update?
