No mention of Lua is complete without a mention of Tcl ;-)

What are people's thoughts on Tcl? It's also highly embedable and light. I like Tcl but I am biased because I've written an application (www.netexpect.org) that embeds Tcl. It certainly has been around longer than Lua, although not sure that is any kind of good indication.

djmount was driving up CPU utilization on my core so I just disabled it. Haven't seen any ill effects so far. Can't remember the exact command that I ran to disable it. Will research and post back here when I get a chance.

For the Z-Wave setup, you obviously have the old HomePro USB Z-Wave controller, right? Or did you actually get to work the Intermatic Z-Wave controller? That'd be nice.

Do you have some documentation about the hardware in the stuff you'll be demo'ing?

Whoops, sorry - I made a typo in my message two messages above. What I meant is that I'd love to be able to configure LinuxMCE to use my existing *backend*, which has been stable for years. The assumption today is that you'll use the mythbackend on the core.

From what I can see, there would also not be too many major issues with using an existing backend from linuxMCE as well (as long as versions matched etc) as the only really tie in that I can see between linuxMCE and MythTV is done on the MediaDirector and the shared file system.

Right. I got a media director to use my existing backend. I don't remember exactly what I did but it may have required CLI access, which is not a big deal. I just wish LinuxMCE played a bit better with things you may have running already, like MythTV and Asterisk.

Personally, I think that relying on any specific distribution is not the best way. For example, I run MythTV on Debian. It's nice that the MythTV software doesn't force me to run Fedora, or Ubuntu, or anything. I look forward to the day when I can do "apt-get install linuxmce" on my Debian box and get a working LinuxMCE installation without having to install another distribution, and without having to use versions of Asterisk or MythTV that have been tied to a specific LinuxMCE version. I hope this day comes one day :-)

Yup. And one of the reasons I'm getting involved is because the MythTV integration needs a little loving.

Glad you're here Daniel! :-)

I think it's pretty close, some of the MythTV issues I see will take me 10 or 15 minutes to fix once we have source repository to work with and a build process that will let me test the changes easily.

Could you elaborate on what some of the MythTV integration issues are, as you see them? Just curious...

My own pet peeve is the inability to configure LinuxMCE to use an existing MythTV frontend - I have a frontend that has been recording since September 2004. It's rock solid and my family relies on it heavily. I am not willing to replace that with LinuxMCE, at least not in the foreseeable future.

I did manage to get a media station to use my existing backend but I think it required me to do something from the command line; can't remember the details.

If you're using your MythTV setup in production, i.e. you periodically record programs on it and your family relies on MythTV, then I would recommend that you first try LinuxMCE on a test box. In my opinion LinuxMCE is still rough around the edges and it may take some tweaking to get it to the level of a MythTV setup in terms of stability.

Having said this, I have not tried the MythTV side of LinuxMCE since my two TV capture cards are in my production MythTV box, and I can't touch that box unless I want to awaken the wrath of my family. Read the posts here and see what sort of success people are having with MythTV on LinuxMCE.

I am also having this problem - the NFS server where I keep thousands of mp3s is taking quite a beating with several mount requests per minute. All these mount requests succeed so I don't know what is going on. I do know that this issue is causing high CPU utilization and thousands of connections being tracked by netfilter and hundreds of "nf_conntrack: table full, dropping packet" messages being generated by the kernel.

I don't know what is going on and am having a hard time trying to determine where to start to troubleshoot this so I can fix it or file a Mantis bug.

"top" shows that djmount and ushare are the processes that monopolize the CPU the most.

the closest thing we have to a "standard" over here in the US is ZWave.. (I don't even consider X-10 to be an option).

I've been following the ZWave "hype" for several months now. Based on what I have read it sounds very promising but my personal opinion is that it is not ready for prime time - yes, lots of companies are making ZWave-compatible products but today I can't easily connect a Linux machine to a ZWave network. The existing interfaces (like Intermatic's) are not supported in Linux and the interfaces that used to work (Homepro's) are now obsolete without a replacement one can buy today.

Yes, I am itching to go ZWave but until I can buy a computer interface that works on Linux I have no other option than waiting.

Am I missing something with regards to the current state of affairs in the ZWave world?

DVD install assumed that I wanted to have a hybrid on the machine I was installing. With the CD install I was asked whether I wanted to use the machine as the core only or as a hybrid.

To me it seems like the DVD install is for a plug and play installation with minimum hassle. The CD installation may be a bit more tedious but gives you more control over the install process.

chris33f, I forgot to mention that it is not bad that the kernel is using a lot of memory to cache files - if an application needs more memory the kernel will provide it from memory being used to cache files if there is no free memory.

Regarding your performance problem with Myth, have you checked the log files? I'd start by taking a look at /var/log/mythtv/.

Thanks asgard. Guess I found that out kinda the hard way since I deleted the 1, 2, 3, and 4 directories in /home/updates and they got downloaded again and I got prompted in an orbiter whether I want to install the update again. I took a look at the script that monitors new updates and I thought it was safe to remove everything but /home/updates/updates.xml*. Guess I missed something.

I don't know how MythTV is reporting memory usage but it is normal to see almost all memory being used since the kernel uses the principle of "no used memory is wasted memory", so it uses memory not used by application as a cache for files on disk.

To get an accurate account of memory usage log into the machine and run the "free" command - that'll tell you how much is being used for file caching.
